Chapter 265: Second Chance (1)

Rosemary leaned against her wheelchair, sipping her morning coffee while observing the flurry of activity happening in her home. The usually serene atmosphere of her grand home was now filled with the sounds of hurried footsteps and whispered instructions. The servants scurried about, dusting furniture, polishing silverware, and arranging flowers as if preparing for an important guest’s arrival.

She raised an eyebrow and looked at her daughter and son-in-law. Rosemary couldn’t remember being informed about receiving a guest that day. Unbeknownst to her, the missing piece of her heart—the son she lost many years ago—was already found.

"What’s got everyone in such a rush?" She asked them.

Adrienne and Lennox shared a knowing look. Hunter was returning home for the first time in three years, and this would be the first time he and their mother would also meet.

"Mom, I have something to tell you. Would you hear me out?" Adrienne asked her mother.

"Addie, what’s going on?" Rosemary asked in return. "Is there something you aren’t telling me?"

"Mom, how come you never told me about my elder brother before?" Adrienne asked, "Do you still blame yourself for what happened?"

Rosemary was startled by her daughter’s sudden question. Speaking about the child she lost many years ago was still painful for her. It wasn’t like she wanted to forget her firstborn, but she had yet to accept that she lost him and that there was nothing she could have done to prevent it.

She took a deep breath before responding, "Addie, it’s not that I never wanted to talk about your brother. It’s just that it’s still difficult for me to discuss."

Rosemary didn’t even get to see or hold him in her arms. She begged her husband to allow her to glimpse their son’s remains, but Lewis vehemently disagreed. He believed it would only intensify her grief and hinder the healing process. Though Rosemary understood his reasoning, a part of her couldn’t help but feel a longing for her lost child. It made sense to her now why her husband acted that way before

In the end, she could only grieve when his body was laid to rest. The pain of being unable to say goodbye properly haunted her every day, leaving her with a sense of emptiness that seemed impossible to fill. She wished she could have done something to prevent his loss, but deep down, she knew it was beyond her control.

"Mom, please don’t blame yourself anymore. Uncle Reese had discovered something. He asked someone to investigate my brother’s birth." Adrienne held her mother’s hand and gave it a light squeeze.

"The tomb you visit every winter is empty. You’ve been grieving all of this time in an empty tomb," Adrienne gently revealed, her voice filled with sympathy. "Uncle Reese found evidence that suggested my brother may still be alive. It didn’t take long before he found Hunter Nian." Adrienne continued.

"Before Father brought Cayden to you, he and Camilla had taken away my newborn brother when you were unconscious. Camilla asked one of her friends to send my brother away, but that same friend decided to keep him and raise him as her own. Do you understand what I’m saying, Mom?"

Adrienne’s voice trembled with a mix of anger and sadness as she revealed the shocking truth about her long-lost brother. She hoped that by sharing this painful secret, her mother would finally see the true nature of the man she had married all those years ago.

Rosemary sat in stunned silence as she processed what she had just heard. Her mind raced as she tried to recall any memories of the day her son was born. She had been so overwhelmed with grief after his death that she had never thought to question her husband about the details surrounding his birth. It was like a veil had been lifted, and she was seeing the truth for the first time.

Her mind raced with countless questions, but one thought stood out. Her son was alive. The son she thought she lost forever was actually out there in the world.

"We almost lost him again, Mom. Camilla found out he was still alive and sent someone to dispose of him. In some miraculous twist of fate, he managed to escape just in time, but my brother lost his adoptive mother in the process." Adrienne revealed, her voice filled with a mix of relief and disbelief.

The realization hit Rosemary like a ton of bricks—not only had she been kept in the dark about her son’s existence, but he had also narrowly escaped another tragic fate.

"Where is he now?" Rosemary finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Adrienne looked at her husband, who nodded, signaling that it was time to reveal the truth to Rosemary.

"He’s on his way, Mom," Adrienne said, a smile spreading across her face. "Hunter is coming home."

Tears filled Rosemary’s eyes as she realized that her long-lost son was alive and well. She had spent years grieving for a child that she thought was lost forever, but now there was a chance for a reunion.

"I don’t know what to say," Rosemary said, her voice choked with emotion.

"You don’t have to say anything, Mom," Adrienne said, wrapping her arms around her mother. "Just be ready to meet your son."

Rosemary’s heart skipped a beat as she heard the truth about her firstborn. A mix of emotions washed over her: relief, anger, betrayal, and elation. Her son was alive, and she had grieved for him all these years in an empty tomb. She couldn’t believe that her husband, Lewis, would do such a thing to her, take away her child, and let her suffer silently.

Tears streamed down her face as she looked at her daughter, who had waited so long to tell her the truth. "Oh, Addie, why did you keep this from me for so long?" Rosemary asked, her voice trembling with emotion.

"Mom, we didn’t want you to get overwhelmed. You are still recovering." Adrienne explained.
