Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 203: I’m Not Willing to Marry, Mr. Han (1)
Adrienne scoffed inwardly. She didn’t understand where Prosecutor Ji’s confidence came from. She kept her expression neutral as she looked at the old man with disdain. Her mind raced, questioning Prosecutor Ji’s audacity to be so self-assured. She discreetly clenched her fists, determined to maintain her composure despite the growing irritation within her.
If earlier her grandfather and Uncle Reese were suspicious, now they were enraged. Prosecutor Ji’s proposal for Adrienne to become Alistair Han’s wife was too much. The room fell into a tense silence as the weight of Prosecutor Ji’s audacious suggestion hung in the air.
Her grandfather’s face turned crimson with anger, mirroring the fiery fury that burned within her Uncle Reese. It was clear that Prosecutor Ji had severely underestimated the depth of their opposition to such a preposterous idea.
Lewis Jiang felt conflicted. He wanted to establish a connection with Alistair Han, and it would be best to marry a daughter to him. Yet why was it that Alistair wanted Adrienne and not Elise?
He pondered over this question, wondering if there was something about Adrienne that he had failed to see. Perhaps there was a hidden attraction or bond between Alistair and Adrienne that made them more compatible. Or maybe it was simply a matter of personal preference on Alistair’s part, something that Lewis couldn’t fully comprehend. Regardless, Lewis knew he had to carefully consider his next move in order to maintain the delicate balance of power within their families.
Meanwhile, Reese was clenching his fist tightly; he never thought Alistair Han would be bold enough to seek his niece’s hand for marriage at this event. He knew Alistair Han was involved in several suspicious activities that were under surveillance by the military. It would be best if Adrienne did not associate herself with this man.
No matter what, he cannot allow his niece to marry a man like Alistair Han. Despite his calm demeanor in public, Alistair had a reputation for being manipulative and deceitful behind closed doors. Reese had heard rumors of Alistair’s involvement in illegal business ventures and connections to dangerous individuals. The thought of Adrienne being trapped in a loveless marriage with such a man sent shivers down his spine. He knew he had to find a way to protect her from Alistair’s clutches, no matter the cost.
Abigail Li, who also attended the banquet, knitted her brows together. Her beautiful dark eyes lit with a chilly glow as she looked at Prosecutor Ji and Alistair Han. However, she lowered her gaze and let her thick, long lashes hide the emotions in her eyes. She would like to see what Adrienne would do. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
After all, what Prosecutor Ji said had some merit. Alistair Han was one of the most eligible bachelors in Chiangshi, and he had massive wealth that could secure Adrienne’s future. Abigail knew that Adrienne had always been practical and had a keen eye for opportunity. She wondered if Adrienne would prioritize financial security over her own feelings and make a decision based solely on Alistair’s wealth.
"Why is Prosecutor Ji interested in my granddaughter’s marriage? Our Zhao family has given her the free will to decide on her marriage, given that her future husband could prove his worth to us. To be honest, I think our Addie is ill suited for Mr. Han. " Cedric Zhao answered. His response reflected his concern about Adrienne. He believed that Alistair Han may not be the best match for her, indicating that he had reservations about the potential union.
He then continued, "Our Addie has always valued emotional connection and compatibility over material things. I believe she will make a decision that aligns with her own happiness and fulfillment rather than being swayed by external factors like Mr. Han’s wealth."
Cedric’s confidence in his granddaughter’s judgment reflected the trust he had in her ability to prioritize her own well-being. He knew that his granddaughter had a strong sense of self and would not compromise her values for the sake of monetary gain. He believed that Adrienne’s happiness and fulfillment were more important than any material wealth, and he was confident that she would make the right decision for herself.
"Isn’t this too early for you to ask for Adrienne’s hand for marriage?" Reese interjected, "I doubted that Mr. Han is already acquainted with our Addie. You don’t even ask her opinion if she agrees on it or not."
Prosecutor Ji’s brows wrinkled for a moment, but he kept the smile on his face as he glanced at Adrienne. His tone was gentle and amiable as he asked, "It’s my fault for not considering Miss Jiang’s opinion. Since your uncle has mentioned it, Miss Jiang, what do you think of Alistair? Do you see a future with him? Would you be open to the idea of marrying him?"
He asked Adrienne in a teasing tone, yet his question held a heavy weight. Adrienne sneered in her heart. This question was putting her in a tight spot. She knew that her response would have consequences, not just for herself but also for the Zhao family. Taking a deep breath, she carefully considered her words before answering.
If she said no, then she would imply that she didn’t look upon Alistair favorably, which would result in others deeming her a foolish person who can’t differentiate a diamond from a useless pebble. It would also leave a bad impression on the Zhao family that they weren’t able to give her a proper education, hence acting foolishly before everyone.
Yet, if Adrienne said she liked Alistair, it would be no different than shooting her own foot instead. She was given a second chance to rectify her mistake and live again, so why would she marry this man? Adrienne had learned from her past experiences and knew that marrying Alistair would only bring her unhappiness and a lifetime of regret.
Everyone present held their breath as they waited for Adrienne to answer Prosecutor Ji’s question. This old man was really cunning and knew exactly how to corner Adrienne. His piercing gaze seemed to penetrate her soul, leaving her feeling vulnerable and exposed. The weight of the room pressed down on her, making it difficult to think clearly.
