Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 202: Marrying Adrienne Jiang (2)
The banquet hall was already packed with guests as the night deepened. Almost all of them belonged to high society and were known as high-ranking officials, which only proved how influential Prosecutor Ji was. In Adrienne’s past life, Prosecutor Ji had become a politician around this time, and his greatest supporters were the Jiang and Han families.
The Zhao family, as well as Adrienne, didn’t greet Prosecutor Ji, but they were bound to have a word with the man soon since Cedric Zhao was quite a prominent figure in society. It didn’t take long before Prosecutor Ji spotted the three and made his way towards them, with Alistair next to him.
Adrienne stood rooted next to her Uncle Reese, then lowered her gaze when she noticed Alistair Han was looking at her. The crowd watched in silence, and Ayla, along with the rest of the Jiang family, glared at Adrienne with disapproval.
Prosecutor Ji greeted Cedric and Reese Zhao, thanking them for attending the banquet. His eyes then turned to Adrienne and said, "You must be Adrienne Jiang. I’ve heard a lot about you from your family and Alistair. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person."
Adrienne nodded, feeling the weight of everyone’s disapproving gaze on her. She mustered a polite smile and replied, "Thank you, Prosecutor Ji. It’s an honor to meet you as well."
Lewis Jiang was startled and glanced at his disowned daughter. Sierra looked towards Adrienne with a sour expression on her face while Ayla bowed her head, trying to hide her jealousy from everyone. She stiffened in disbelief when she heard Alistair had some opinions towards her cousin, Adrienne.
"What a beautiful young lady." Prosecutor Ji continued, "The Zhao family must be proud of producing a granddaughter like her."
Reese Zhao frowned, then placed a comforting hand over Adrienne’s shoulder. He felt something was off when Prosecutor Ji kept looking in his niece’s direction. Reese’s intuition told him that there was more to Prosecutor Ji’s comments than just admiration for Adrienne’s beauty. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was an ulterior motive behind the prosecutor’s words, causing him to grow increasingly suspicious.
"Of course, our Adrienne is treated like a precious pearl in our hands."
Seeing this scene, the guests started talking in low voices. Valerie Xia, who was seated a few meters from the Zhao family, was a little uneasy. She recalled their earlier conversation about Alistair Han, so she couldn’t help but worry about Adrienne.
Adrienne answered indifferently, with her eyes lowered.
"Thanking Prosecutor Ji for his compliment, but this one doesn’t deserve it."
There was no warmth in her tone, not even respect for the elder before her. Her attitude made Prosecutor Ji pause. After a moment, he smiled wildly and asked.
"Does Master Zhao have any marriage arrangements with Miss Jiang already?"
Cedric Zhao’s smile stiffened, and a sudden rage grew in his chest. His eyes darkened as he looked at the two men before them. So they were targeting his granddaughter all this time? He clenched his fists, struggling to maintain his composure.
"Prosecutor Ji, my granddaughter is still young and hasn’t been promised marriage to anyone yet." He answered, oblivious to the fact that Adrienne had already been engaged and would be married to Lennox Qin very soon.
"Ah, then that’s good to hear." Prosecutor Ji’s smile widened, his eyes curving into inverted crescents as he looked at Adrienne.
"Such a lovely and smart lady shouldn’t be married off carelessly. Only the most suitable bachelor should have her hand in marriage, don’t you think, Master Zhao?"
Reese was already fuming in anger and was about to retort when Adrienne grabbed his arm and shook her head. For the past three years, her relationship with her uncle had drastically improved. Reese had treated her like a daughter, far better than Lewis Jiang could do for her. Adrienne understood that he was upset, but it would shame the entire Zhao family if Reese Zhao acted harshly this time.
In the end, Reese chose his words carefully and said, "Since it’s marriage, it depends whether our Addie likes it or not. We won’t force her to marry out of obligation, and there’s also no way we’ll give her hand to an unworthy man. We want her to be happy and have a partner who will treat her with the love and respect she deserves."
Reese’s words reassured Adrienne, knowing that her uncle had her best interests at heart. She felt grateful for his support. She knew that her uncle would always prioritize her happiness and well-being above all else.
Lewis Jiang’s face looked unsightly upon hearing Reese’s words. He never got along with this brother-in-law of his. His disdain for Reese was evident in his clenched jaw and narrowed eyes.
When Prosecutor Ji heard Reese’s words, the smile on his face became even more suspicious.
"But Master Zhao, if I may be bold to say, if you are looking for a suitable partner for your granddaughter, don’t look further. With such a beautiful and clever lady, is there anyone more suitable to be her partner in Chiangshi than Alistair Han?" He proclaimed.
The expression on Adrienne’s face turned cold. There was a complete silence among everyone in the banquet hall. As for Ayla Jiang, who was listening to their conversation nearby, her complexion turned deadly pale as her strength seeped out of her body.
Fortunately, her mother had moved and held her waist to keep her steady; otherwise, Ayla would have made a fool out of herself by planting her face on the cold marbled floor.
The tension in the room was palpable as all eyes were fixed on Adrienne and Alistair.
Cedric Zhao narrowed his eyes. "Is that so?"
"Yes, you see, Master Zhao, Alistair Han is my godson, and I have known him since he was young. He had already reached marriageable age, but he kept refusing the other maidens his family suggested to him. Although your granddaughter is still young, they can be engaged until she’s ready for marriage." Prosecutor Ji answered confidently.
