Chapter 195: I’ll Always Love You (1)

Elise Jiang would have never known that the words she uttered were once the reality Adrienne lived in her past life. Nor did she know Adrienne had lost everything in the end. However, in this life, Adrienne was set to destroy those who owed her a blood debt.

As the days passed quietly, Adrienne spent her time reviewing for the final exam with Lennox’s help and helping the children with their homework. A month after Rachel’s death, Vaughn and Vincent eventually moved to the Jinxiu Garden and met their eldest brother for the first time.

Adrienne had just tucked in Noah for his afternoon nap when she heard a commotion in the hallway. She quietly slipped out of the boy’s room and found the twins in a heated argument. No —it was more like Vaughn was expressing his displeasure towards his younger brother.

"How could you decide without telling me, Vince?" Vaughn exclaimed. "How long have you been planning to do it without telling me?"

"I did try to tell you, but you won’t hear any of it." Vincent answered in a calm manner. "Mom and Eldest Brother already agreed, so why won’t you?"

Vaughn’s face turned red with anger as he clenched his fists. He took a deep breath, trying to control his temper.

"I can’t believe you would make such a big decision without even consulting me," he said through gritted teeth. "It’s not about them agreeing; it’s about you keeping me in the dark," he retorted. "We’re supposed to be a team, Vince, and you went behind my back."

Vincent sighed, his voice filled with frustration.

"I didn’t want to burden you," he explained. "I thought it would be easier this way, but I see now that I was wrong."

"What’s going on?" Adrienne folded her arms over her chest and gave the twins a pointed look. This was the first time she had witnessed such tension between Vince and Vincent. She could sense the weight of their unspoken disagreement hanging in the air.

Vaughn and Vincent glanced at each other before the younger of the twins answered Adrienne’s question.

"Addie, I decided to stay here and enlist in the military. Brother Nox gave me his approval, but my brother won’t allow me to do it."

Adrienne’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she processed Vincent’s admission. She knew how important their bond was, but she also understood the significance of pursuing one’s dreams. With a sigh, she spoke softly, "Maybe it’s time for both of you to have an honest conversation and find a compromise that respects each other’s wishes."

"Let’s talk about this later, Vaughn, once you’re calm enough to hold a conversation without throwing a fit." Vincent said, before leaving the two behind.

Adrienne glanced at the older twin, seeing the frustration on Vaughn’s face.

"Come, let’s hear what your Brother Nox has to say about it."

Vaughn grunted but followed Adrienne to Lennox’s study anyway. Adrienne knocked on the door before entering the room. Lennox was speaking on the phone when he saw Adrienne and Vaughn arrive together. He gestured to them to wait for a while, as he was speaking to his mother.

Adrienne and Vaughn sat on the couch silently. Once Lennox’s call was over, he wasted no time and regarded them.

’"Is there a problem?" he asked.

"I heard you allowed Vince to enlist in the military. Is it true?" Vaughn confronted their eldest brother.

Lennox glanced at Adrienne confusedly, but she only gave him a shrug.

"I understand that you and Vincent have been together since birth. I told him to discuss this with you, and yes, I did allow him. Though Addie and I are your guardians, we cannot dictate to you what to do with your lives. I could see the determination in your brother’s eyes, so I gave him my approval. As your older brother, it is my responsibility to look after you, but I cannot control you."

Vaughn’s eyes widened in surprise. "But Brother Nox, enlisting in the military is a huge decision. Did you consider the risks involved? What if something happens to him?"

"I can ask my uncle and brother to look after Vince, but whether he could survive the training or not, it’s up to him." Adrienne interjected. As she looked at Vaughn’s expression, she couldn’t help but wonder if his hesitation to part with his younger brother stemmed from his fear of losing Vincent.

"What about you, Vaughn?" Lennox asked, "Have you figured out what to do once you graduated in high school?"

Vaughn sighed and rubbed his temples, contemplating Lennox’s question. "I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately," he admitted. "I know I want to pursue a career in music, but I’m not sure if I should go straight to college or take a gap year to explore my options and gain some real-world experience." He paused, his eyes meeting Adrienne’s. "But whatever path I choose, one thing is certain - Vincent will always be my priority."

"Then why can’t Vincent do the same?" Adrienne asked. "Is it because this would be the first time the two of you would part ways with one another?"

Vaughn nodded, not daring to deny Adrienne’s assumptions at all. They were twins, after all. From the moment they were born, they accompanied each other. Though their personalities differed from one another, Vaughn deeply cared about his younger brother.

He couldn’t bear the thought of Vincent facing the world alone, especially since he knew how much his brother relied on him for support and guidance. Vaughn understood that it was time for them to explore their individual paths, but he couldn’t help but worry about how Vincent would cope without him by his side.

"I also didn’t expect that he already had a plan in mind. When our mother fell sick, Vince and I did nothing but to tend to her needs. Our dreams and aspirations were forgotten. Mom must have known what Vince wanted to do and gave him her permission." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

He paused and looked away in shame. He clenched his fists tightly. Vaughn realized that he had been so consumed with his own worries and fears that he hadn’t considered Vincent’s perspective. He felt guilty for not giving his brother enough credit and for underestimating his ability to handle things on his own.

"You are right, Brother Nox. As Vince’s older brother, I should have been more understanding and patient with him. I’ll have a talk to him later to discuss his plans for the future."
