Chapter 190: Vaughn and Vincent Qin (3)

"How foolish." Adrienne looked away and tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ear. She wondered how Richard’s actions had affected Lennox’s perception of love and relationships.

Cheating was something Adrienne could never understand or tolerate. Wouldn’t it be better for both parties to part ways than to make their lives miserable?

Adrienne believed true happiness could only be found in honesty and trust, and she couldn’t fathom why anyone would risk destroying a relationship for temporary gratification. She hoped that Lennox would learn from Richard’s mistakes and find someone who would love and cherish him without betrayal.

She paused at the thought. Would she be willing to become that person for him?

Rachel chuckled, taking Adrienne back from her trance. "It is, Miss Jiang. But sometimes, love makes people do foolish things. I hope Lennox doesn’t make the same mistake his father did."

"If there’s something I know about Lennox, he’s loyal to his loved ones. However, if there’s a day he chooses to take the wrong path, I will force him to see what he’ll lose in the end." Adrienne’s eyes narrowed, determination shining through. "I won’t let him repeat his father’s mistakes."

Rachel rested her head back on her pillow. She eyed the folder Adrienne was holding and gestured to her to hand it over.

Adrienne wordlessly handed it to Rachel, watching as the sick lawyer read the document’s contents. It didn’t take long before Rachel signed it, allowing Lennox to have custody of the twins and become their legal guardian.

Rachel paused, taking deep breaths, and then continued. "I want you to promise me something."

"What is it?" Adrienne asked, curious about what Rachel could possibly want from her.

"Promise me that you and Lennox will take care of my sons. I know they can be stubborn and difficult at times, but they have good hearts. They just need someone who can guide them well." Rachel spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "Promise me you’ll be there for them, even after I’m gone."

Adrienne nodded solemnly. "I promise."

She couldn’t imagine how painful it was for Rachel to leave her sons behind. But Adrienne knew the least she could do was ease Rachel’s mind by promising to care for the twins. She would be there for them, and Lennox would too. They would be their legal guardians and, most importantly, their family.

"Thank you," Rachel said, her eyes growing heavy. "I’ve heard things about you recently, Miss Jiang. You’re a good person. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise."

A good person? Adrienne laughed inwardly. She didn’t think she was a good person like Rachel claimed her to be.

And with that, Rachel closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep. Adrienne sat there for a moment, watching as the older woman’s chest rose and fell with each shallow breath. She sat there for a few moments, watching as Rachel slipped into a peaceful slumber.

She couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness wash over her. Rachel had been through so much and had achieved so much in her life. But in the end, it was all for nothing. She was still going to die.

Adrienne had always thought of death as a natural thing that eventually happened to everyone. But seeing Rachel lying there, so vulnerable in her hospital bed, made her realize how fragile life was. One moment, you could be at the top of the world, and the next, you could be lying on your deathbed, struggling to take each breath.

As she got up to leave, Adrienne couldn’t help but reflect on what Rachel had said. She realized that life was short and that one should never take anything for granted. Meanwhile, Vaughn and Vincent had been waiting for her at the corner.

Once she stepped out of the room, Myrtle greeted her while Hunter and Irina conversed lowly about Lennox’s plans for the twins and how they should proceed. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

"Are you alright, Addie?" She asked Adrienne.

Myrtle hadn’t expected the twins’ mother’s condition to worsen. Adrienne only mentioned that the twins’ mother was sick, not dying.

Adrienne took a deep breath and tried to compose herself before responding to Myrtle. She mustered a weak smile and replied, "I’m just a bit shaken, Myrtle. I didn’t realize it was this serious."

No wonder Vincent wasn’t willing to leave their mother’s side because Rachel was about to die anytime soon.

Myrtle nodded in understanding. "It’s never easy losing someone you care about. I’m worried about those boys. But you’re doing a good thing, Addie. They’re lucky to have you and Lennox."

Adrienne smiled, grateful for Myrtle’s words of encouragement. "Thank you, Myrtle."

Myrtle smiled, patting Adrienne’s arm. "Now, let’s get out of here and grab a drink. You look like you could use one. Non-alcoholic, of course. Mr. Qin might skin me alive if I let you get drunk."

Adrienne laughed, feeling a bit better already. "That sounds like a good idea."

She then informed the twins of their mother’s request to leave the hospital. Vaughn and Vincent looked at each other and nodded in understanding. They were still young, but Adrienne could see they were trying to make things comfortable for their sick mother.

Irina immediately did the paperwork and arranged for someone to bring Rachel Song home with the twins. In just an hour, an ambulance was prepared for Rachel.

Adrienne thanked Irina for her quick action and turned to Vaughn and Vincent. "You two are doing such a great job taking care of your mom," she said, giving them a reassuring smile. "I’m sure she’ll be so happy to see you when she gets home."

As they walked out of the hospital, Adrienne couldn’t help but think about her promise to Rachel. She knew looking after two teenage boys would be challenging for her and Lennox, but she was determined to do her best. For Rachel’s sake and the twins’ future, she would be the best guardian she could be.
