Chapter 189: Vaughn and Vincent Qin (2)

Adrienne could understand Vincent because she was once in their shoes. It wasn’t easy for anyone to leave their sickly mother. It was enough that the mother of the twins agreed with Lennox’s proposition to look after them once she passed away.

The twins’ mother, Rachel Song, had been diagnosed with leukemia five years ago, and it was rapidly progressing. Rachel was a corporate lawyer. The wealth she amassed during her younger years slowly dried up because of her medical expenses.

She never married and was content raising her twins alone. Adrienne heard from Gavin that Lennox’s father had an unusual friendship with Rachel. It came as a surprise to Adrienne that Lennox’s father didn’t marry Rachel, considering she’s the most suitable bride among his lovers.

According to the reports, Richard Qin provided for the twins’ child support and sent a large sum to cover Rachel’s hospital bills. This proved that he held her in high regard.

When their group returned to the hospital, Rachel requested to have a word with Adrienne. Adrienne agreed, entered the room, and sat beside the bed. Rachel removed the mask on her face and gave Adrienne a weak smile.

"Lennox gave me a call and explained the situation to me. He said he’d be sending his wife over. I never thought you were this young."

"We aren’t married yet, Miss Song." Adrienne clarified the misunderstanding, "It’s not the right time for us to get married."

"I see," Rachel replied. "The Qin family would surely put a reward on your head once they caught the news of Lennox’s marriage."

Adrienne could see that the older woman was struggling to breathe on her own and wondered if she should convince Rachel to put back her mask.

"I’m alright," Rachel told her as if she knew what Adrienne was thinking at that moment. "I’m starting to hate this place, actually."

Adrienne glanced at Rachel, her expression filled with concern. The older woman’s words hinted at the hidden pain she was trying to keep at bay. It was clear that Rachel’s health was declining, and she was trying to hide her discomfort from her sons.

"I understand, Miss Song. I don’t blame you," Adriene said sympathetically. "Being stuck in this place for so long can really take a toll on one’s spirit."

"I wish to return home and see the beach, Miss Jiang." Rachel requested. "I know I don’t have much time left. If possible, I want to spend all of it with Vaughn and Vincent."

"Vincent requested them to stay here with you until it was time for them to leave with Lennox," Adrienne informed Rachel. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

"The doctor said it wouldn’t be painful, but I will feel some discomfort. Do you know? Lennox’s call the other day was some miracle to me. I’ve been worrying about the twins lately. At least with you and Lennox around, I would be at ease that my children wouldn’t be alone."

Rachel paused as she gave Adrienne a good look. She thought the young woman before her was quite a beauty. There was a saying that men conquer the world, but beauties like Adrienne Jiang conquer men. She could see why Lennox was interested in this young woman.

"I see why Lennox wanted to marry you." Rachel smiled. "You have so much in common."

Adrienne raised a slender brow, wondering what made Rachel say that. It wasn’t the first time Adrienne heard about it. Even Lennox had mentioned it once before.

"He wouldn’t send you here if he didn’t trust you, and I have known Lennox for a long time."

"You do?" Adrienne was caught off guard. Lennox and Gavin never mentioned anything to her about this. However, thinking about it, Lennox had assured her that convincing Rachel Song would be easy. Adrienne understood now why Lennox said it.

"I met his father when I was studying law. I was young and foolish back then. Next to seven-year-old Lennox Qin, I felt stupid compared to him. He was young but already understood that he would have new siblings, but they wouldn’t come from his mother. His round, dark eyes stared at me as if trying to see something in me." Rachel smiled at the memory. "Lennox looks just like his mother, doesn’t he?" 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Adrienne could only nod while trying to figure out what Rachel wanted to say by mentioning the past. Was she trying to justify her previous affair with Lennox’s father? It was apparent that Rachel was a smart woman, but why would someone like her allow herself to become someone’s mistress?

"Would you believe me if I said Richard truly loved his wife?"

Adrienne’s expression turned worse. She furrowed her brow, skeptical of Rachel’s claim. She had always believed that Richard’s marriage was one of convenience rather than love. The thought of him actually loving his wife seemed far-fetched to her. She hesitated before responding, "I find it hard to believe, considering everything I know about their relationship. I failed to see how someone could love their wife while cheating with other women."

"I see what you mean." Rachel laughed, then coughed behind her hand. "But do you know that loving someone who could never return your affection is one of the worst things a person could experience?"

Adrienne said nothing. She had already lived twice, but her experience of love was superficial. She didn’t know what the sick woman wanted to hear from her.

Adrienne couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness for Rachel. Here was a woman who had accomplished so much in life yet was now confined to a hospital bed, struggling to take each breath.

"Believe it or not, he loved Abigail, but her heart was already set on someone else’s when they met. To his younger brother of all people." Rachel continued when Adrienne kept her silence. "Lennox thought his father hated his mother and despised her the most, but if I may be bold to say, Richard tried to see Abigail with other women he’d been with," Rachel said, her voice growing weaker by the minute.
