Chapter 186: Turning Black to White (2)

It was Valerie’s first time spending the night at Myrtle’s place. She helped Adrienne spread the mattress on the floor and took the pillows from Myrtle. As she lay down next to Adrienne, a sense of warmth and contentment bloomed in her heart. However, remembering the report she received that morning effectively soured her mood.

"Addie, you were right. Airi was up to something." She muttered quite quietly as she stared at the white ceiling.

The lampshade next to Myrtle’s bed provided scant illumination for the space. The soft glow of the lampshade cast gentle shadows on the walls, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. Valerie could feel her eyelids growing heavy, but her mind still raced about Airi’s suspicious activities. She couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease, even in the comfort of Myrtle’s room.

"Huh? What about your little sister?" Myrtle asked confusedly. She rolled on her right side and propped her head with a hand as she looked at her friends. She had heard things about Airi Xia but hadn’t seen the young woman.

Valerie’s eyes were filled with fury as she said, "That wench isn’t my little sister. She’s not part of my Xia family!"

"Calm down, Val. Did you hear it from Miss Shen then?" Adrienne asked, knowing that Katherine Shen disclosed the real situation to Valerie.

Now that Valerie knew Airi’s true colors and intentions toward the Xia family, she wouldn’t let that woman take anything from her. Valerie was determined to protect her family and ensure that Airi Xia would fail in her plans. She vowed to uncover the truth about Airi and expose her for who she really was, no matter what it took.

"Yes," Valerie answered, with a hint of sadness this time. "I would have never thought she was harboring thoughts about our family. The leader of the kidnappers who abducted Mom when she was alive was Airi’s uncle, and now she’s colluding with him to steal from my family."

"She must have thought your Xia family owed her something. But, Val. You must remember, if someone covets what’s yours, you shouldn’t let them take it from you without a fight."

"I know, Addie. I also asked Kat to help me speak with my father and brother. They would doubt my words if I informed them of Airi’s recent actions. They wouldn’t doubt their words since they trust Kat and the Shen family."

Myrtle listened intently to their conversation, feeling a sense of unease wash over her. She had always considered Valerie, a kind-hearted person, but the anger and determination in her voice made her wary. She wondered what kind of trouble Valerie was getting herself into and if she could handle it.

Adrienne noticed the worried expression on Myrtle’s face and knew what her best friend was thinking. She reached out and gently squeezed Myrtle’s hand, reassuringly smiling. "I understand your concern, but let’s not jump to conclusions just yet," Adrienne said softly.

"Valerie is strong and resourceful, and she always finds a way to overcome challenges. Let’s have faith in her abilities and offer our support if she needs it. Getting rid of Airi without bringing disgrace to the Xia family would be tricky." She continued.

"Couldn’t you just reveal what she’s been doing? Isn’t that enough to justify the Xia family’s kicking her out of the family?" Myrtle hated how complex the lives of affluent families were. Even she was scrutinized just because she had a ’Han’ surname.

Myrtle had lost count of how many times someone had tried to humiliate her because of it

"No, it’s not enough. Since Airi is still a minor, they could easily claim that her uncle was simply taking advantage of her. She would push all the blame on her uncle and claim herself as a victim. Her uncle would be send behind bars but Airi can escape unscathed. It would not only clear her name but also put the Xia family in question." Adrienne answered. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

Myrtle sighed, feeling a pang of sympathy for Valerie and frustration at the unfairness of it all. "It’s infuriating how easily someone can manipulate the truth to protect themselves and tarnish others’ reputations," she remarked, her voice filled with indignation.

"Turning black to white is a feat not everyone can do." Adrienne continued, "Val would need irrefutable evidence to pin Airi down. She might be young, but she’s already harboring ill thoughts toward others. Who knows what she could do once she gains a few more years?"

Myrtle and Valerie fell silent. They both understood what Adrienne meant.

"Our family never mistreated her. I still couldn’t believe she was stealing from us." Valerie confessed.

"I’m glad I don’t have a little sister like them." Myrtle commented, "I would be annoyed to death if I had a sister like Elise and Airi. Thankfully, Mom never conceived a child after marriage, though I assumed it was because of my stepbrother."

"It’s not the fault of the Xia family for Airi to become like this. I’m sure your parents tried to raise her as a decent human being." Adrienne said. "Some people just feel they are entitled to have everything." "

"It’s unfortunate that Airi turned out this way, but it’s important to remember that everyone is responsible for their own actions," Myrtle added sympathetically. "We can only hope that she realizes the error of her ways and chooses to change for the better."

In a way, Adrienne felt sorry for her half-sister, Elise. Elise turned out to be a horrible person because no one bothered to raise her properly or teach her right from wrong. It wasn’t like Adrienne thought she was a good person. However, she was fortunate that, despite her mother’s wealth, Rosemary didn’t spoil her rotten.

Camilla Yan’s petty jealousy against Adrienne and her mother and Lewis Jiang spoiled Elise because, to him, she was a tool for his family’s success. None of them bothered to care deeply for their daughter, and now that Elise had encountered a mishap because of their scheming, they still had the nerve to blame Adrienne.
