Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 184: Bittersweet Goodbye (2)
Adrienne put the Jiang estate on sale a few days later. It became the talk of the town immediately, as everyone knew by now about her strained relationship with her father. Lewis Jiang threw a fit in his manor once the news reached him. He knew how much that property cost, and he couldn’t believe everything would end up with his daughter.
Meanwhile, Adrienne didn’t give a damn what her father was thinking. Lewis Jiang should have expected something like this to happen when he left the estate with his second family.
Adrienne stared in a daze as she stared outside the window as her brother drove them to Jinxiu Garden. She received good news that morning and couldn’t wait to share it with Lennox, who had helped all this time.
Lennox was waiting impatiently for their arrival. Since Irina informed him of Adrienne’s visit today, he couldn’t focus on the book he was reading. He knew Adrienne could deal with things on her own, but he could only calm down when he saw her with his own eyes.
He was tapping his fingertips on the table, watching as the second hand ticked inside the clock. Lennox’s heart raced with anticipation as each passing second felt like an eternity. He couldn’t help but wonder what the good news had Adrienne so excited.
As the clock’s hand finally reached the appointed time, Lennox’s eyes darted towards the entrance, eagerly awaiting Adrienne’s arrival. However, when Adrienne arrived, he noticed a glint of sadness in her eyes. He wondered what went wrong this time.
"Hey," He greeted her as he pushed his wheelchair and stopped before Adrienne.
Adrienne took her usual spot on the couch and smiled at him. She then pulled out an envelope with the name of Chiangshi University printed on it as its sender.
"I got in." Her smile widened. "It’s all thanks to you. You’ve been patiently teaching me for the past few weeks. I could answer most of the questions because we’ve covered them during our sessions."
Lennox took her hand and gave it a light squeeze. "I’m so proud of you, Adrienne," Lennox said with a heartfelt smile. "Your hard work and dedication have paid off. I knew you had it in you to succeed. Chiangshi University is lucky to have you as a student. I’m sure your brother is proud of you."
"I haven’t told him yet." Adrienne confessed, "I want to share the news with you first."
As Lennox gazed at Adrienne, he couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes sparkled with excitement. He couldn’t deny that he was growing fond of her too.
"Well, I’m honored," Lennox said before a playful grin formed on his lips. "But you should probably tell your brother before he finds out through the grapevine."
Adrienne chuckled and said, "You’re probably right. But thank you again, Len. I couldn’t have done it without you."
Lennox reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "Is something bothering you, Adrienne?"
Adrienne hesitated for a moment before finally speaking. "It’s my father," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He threatened Mother Wang and forced her to drug me. She was the reason why they almost succeeded in ruining me that night."
Lennox’s expression turned serious. "You need to be careful, Adrienne. Your father is not a man to be underestimated. If he managed to get into you by using Mother Wang, he might attempt to try someone else again. Have you dealt with Mother Wang?"
Adrienne nodded. She knew her father better than anyone else. She doubted Camilla was ready to see that side of him or would be prepared once that wickedness was turned towards her.
"I know. But I can’t just sit back and do nothing. I have to protect myself. That’s why I decided to move with the Zhao family, with Mom and my brother. I also let Mother Wang retire so she wouldn’t get involved with the Jiang family again."
Lennox squeezed her hand again, offering her what comfort he could. "I’ll help you in any way I can, Addie. You know that, right?"
Adrienne smiled at him. "Thank you, Len. It’s not your obligation to look after me, but you’ve been a great help lately."
Lennox and Gavin helped her deal with the mercenary her Uncle Waylen hired to kill her. Although it was her idea to offer a counteroffer on her uncle’s head, Lennox and Gavin’s influence secured her safety.
Lennox felt his heart swell at her words. He knew he would do anything to keep her safe, even if it meant putting his life on the line. Although he knew that their relationship could only be limited by their contract marriage, Lennox couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to hold her in his arms and be loved by her.
But he quickly shook those thoughts away, knowing now was not the time to indulge in his fantasies. He had to be there for her and support her in any way he could.
"I’ll always be here for you, Addie. You know that already, right?" Lennox said, his voice soft and reassuring. "No matter what happens, I’ll always have your back."
Adrienne leaned in toward him, her head resting on his shoulder. Lennox felt his heart race as he held her close, savoring the moment. He pressed his nose on her head and subtly took in her familiar scent.
It was the scent he’d been wanting to smell lately. The spicy scent of Adrienne’s shampoo, with a hint of apple and pear, mixed with the sweet, tangy scent of her perfume. The aroma was both calming and stimulating.
For a brief moment, they stayed like that, lost in each other’s embrace. But all too soon, the moment passed, and Adrienne pulled away, a look of determination on her face.
"I have to go, Len," she said, her voice firm. "There’s still much to do before we leave for the Zhao family’s estate."
Lennox nodded, understanding the urgency in her voice. "Of course, Addie. Just promise me one thing."
"What’s that?" Adrienne asked, her eyes meeting his.
"Promise me that you’ll be careful," Lennox said, his voice filled with concern. "And that you’ll return to me, safe and sound."
