Adrienne woke up restless before dawn. She glanced outside the window of her room, seeing that the sky was still dark. Mother Wang was to leave any time soon, and she wanted to send her off.

When she descended the stairs, she found the older woman weeping as she spoke with her brother. From the looks of it, Mother Wang was apologizing to Hunter. They stopped conversing when they noticed Adrienne had arrived.

"Miss Addie..." Mother Wang looked at her with tears in her eyes.

"Enjoy your retirement, Mother Wang. Please don’t blame yourself anymore. You did what you’ve done for your son. It’s also time for you to spend more time with him." Adrienne replied before looking away. She couldn’t bear to look at the older woman’s face for too long. She didn’t want her decision to let Mother Wang waver.

Hunter and Uncle Mo helped load Mother Wang’s luggage on the trunk of the cab while Adrienne leaned against the frame of the main door, watching the woman who raised her leave.

This separation would be for the better. Since her trust was already broken, her relationship with Mother Wang won’t change again. Adrienne couldn’t pretend and turn a blind eye to what Mother Wang did. By letting her off, she also spares the older woman from getting hurt because of the Jiang family.

Mother Wang left, and Adrienne remained standing even though the cab disappeared from her sight. Her brother reached for her and placed a hand on her shoulder. He knew this was a bittersweet goodbye between his sister and Mother Wang.

"Addie..." Hunter looked at her with inquisitive eyes. "Why was Mother Wang apologizing to me earlier? Did something happen?"

Adrienne gave him a weak smile. So Mother Wang didn’t have the heart to confess what she had done to her brother.

"It was Mother Wang who gave me the paralytic drug that almost cost me my entire life. I’ve let her go so the Jiang family won’t dare use her again against me."

Hunter stiffened, his fist clenching at his side. "I see. So it’s the Jiang family again." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"It’s father, to be exact," Adrienne continued. "He wanted to ensure I’d marry into the Gu family."

Hunter’s eyes narrowed, anger flickering across his face. "That manipulative bastard," he muttered under his breath. "He’s been pulling the strings all along, hasn’t he?"

Adrienne nodded solemnly. "Yes, it seems that way. Father has always been obsessed with power and control. He sees the Gu family as a way to solidify his own position."

Hunter’s grip on Adrienne’s shoulder tightened, his protective instincts kicking in. "We can’t let him get away with this, Addie. We have to find a way to stop him from going after you. Why couldn’t they just leave you alone?"

Adrienne’s gaze met her brother’s, determination shining in her eyes. She knew the answer, but she doubted Hunter would believe her. "I won’t let him ruin our lives any longer."

Hunter’s expression hardened, and his voice filled with resolve. "No one hurts our family and gets away with it, even if it’s our father."

Adrienne smiled, grateful for her brother’s unwavering support.

"I swear, Addie. Someday, I would make him regret everything he’d done to you and Mom. No matter how hard or long it takes, I will not stop until nothing is left on him." Her brother continued. "

"This is why you need to get stronger, brother. In the future, they won’t dare make a move so easily against me with you and Uncle Reese around. I plan to take back whatever Mom has given them."

Hunter nodded. At least now, his younger sister is willing to share her burden with him, unlike before. As they stood next to each other, Hunter could finally say that Adrienne finally considered him her big brother. However, he also knew she still had some reservations and felt she trusted Lennox Qin more.

"Have you informed Lennox Qin that you are moving in with the Zhao family?" He asked.

Although he disagreed with his sister’s decision to marry Lennox Qin, Hunter admitted that Lennox Qin was the best person to protect Adrienne. Lennox Qin had a hand in helping Adrienne resolve her past problems when Hunter wasn’t around.

"No, but I don’t think he would oppose the idea. Didn’t you ask him to convince me to move with the Zhao family before?"

Hunter nodded. "We did talk about it, but I wasn’t surprised when you refused to listen to him. What made you change your mind?"

He had always known his sister to be fiercely independent and stubborn, unwilling to compromise when she had a plan in mind. But now, faced with the harsh reality of their dangerous situation, Adrienne seemed to have reevaluated her priorities.

"Mom," Adrienne answered without batting an eyelid, "After I found out from Uncle Shark that it was Mother Wang who drugged me, I realized that Father and the Jiang family would use anyone close to me to get into me. I won’t jeopardize Mom’s safety anymore. The Jiang family knows she’s my weakness. I already lost Mother Wang; I don’t want to lose Mom too."

"But she’s also your strength," Hunter corrected her. "If it weren’t for your need to protect Mom, she wouldn’t live and survive to this day. Thank you for not giving up on her, Addie. If you hadn’t opposed Father’s decision to cut her life support, I wouldn’t have had a chance to see her at all. So don’t ever think that Mom is your weakness."

Adrienne’s eyes glistened with tears. "Thank you, Brother."

If Hunter knew how she failed miserably to protect their mother in her past life, he wouldn’t be saying these things.

"You’re the strongest person I know, Addie. I know I haven’t been around for a long time, but I hope I’m someone you can rely on."

Hunter wordlessly pulled his sister toward him and embraced her. He couldn’t help but hate their father and the Jiang family even more. He couldn’t help thinking that if it weren’t for their mother, Adrienne wouldn’t need to go through all the pain and suffering she had experienced. It hurt him to see his sister like this.
