Chapter 159: On the Verge of Insanity (1)

However, how could everyone stop the news from spreading? The news of Ares Gu humiliating and defiling Elise Jiang spread quickly—not even a half-hour later. How could Lennox do nothing after what the Jiang and Gu families did to Adrienne?

It was obviously his doing, but Adrienne and the rest were still oblivious to it. No matter how much Camilla wanted to hide her daughter’s mishap, their fate was already set when they schemed against Adrienne.

The news of Ares Gu’s actions against Elise Jiang ignited a firestorm of gossip and speculation within their social circles. Rumors traveled like wildfire, reaching even those who were not directly involved in the situation. It seemed impossible to contain the scandalous tale that threatened to tarnish both families’ reputations.

The crowd dispersed, and Adrienne returned to Katherine Shen’s room to change clothes. She had just zipped up her skirt when she saw Katherine standing behind her with her arms crossed. Irina was downstairs, accompanying her grandfather. Surely the Gu family wouldn’t allow her grandfather to leave without trying to make excuses for today’s event.

"I was curious why you would ask me to bring sleepwear to a birthday party. It turned out that your family is scheming against you yet again. You surprised me today, Miss Jiang," Katherine said with a hint of amusement.

Three days ago, Katherine received a message from Adrienne asking for her cooperation. She was curious about what Adrienne was up to at this time but surmised that something was about to happen during Marion Gu’s coming-of-age ceremony. Since Adrienne made such preparations, Katherine wanted to see how it would end.

She spent a sleepless night waiting for Adrienne to come to her room, and it was only at dawn that Adrienne came to her with a pale complexion. Adrienne explained what her stepmother and the Gu family were up to, rendering Katherine speechless.

Katherine didn’t doubt that Adrienne was also responsible for Elise being in the room. She must have taken her sister away while everyone was in the banquet hall. This scheme Adrienne devised could have easily been avoided had Ares used the right head last night. If he had taken a moment to make sure the woman was Adrienne, they wouldn’t have lost so easily to her.

She looked at the young woman before her and thought Adrienne’s way was so ruthless that she didn’t hesitate to harm her sister. However, she also cannot contest that the Jiang family was innocent, as they were the ones who colluded and schemed against their young daughter.

Adrienne looked at the reflection of the other young woman in the mirror and smiled. She had a gist of what Katherine thought of her. Before this woman, Adrienne knew she didn’t need to pretend.

"Many thanks to you, Miss Shen. I wouldn’t be able to win if it wasn’t for your help," she responded. "If you need help in the future, please do not hesitate to call me. I apologize if you were dragged into this issue."

"Don’t worry about it. It’s not like your Jiang family could do anything to me, but you were careless last night. Alistair Han recognized you at the banquet hall. Thankfully, he let you go before someone else recognized you."

Adrienne was stunned. She would have almost forgotten that incident if Katherine hadn’t mentioned it. She was fortunate to escape last night, but to think that Alistair hadn’t stopped her left her baffled. Alistair would have taken her away without hesitation if it had been in her past life.

"He did?"

So she wasn’t overthinking last night when she thought Alistair had recognized her. Her mind immediately went blank when she noticed him.

"Alistair Han’s eyes never left you when you entered the banquet hall. I recognized you at once, but I was surprised when he also did." Katherine shrugged. "I helped you for a reason. My brother is now trying to look at the information you relayed to me about Airi Xia."

She paused as a thought crossed her mind. Adrienne asked her another favor aside from her cooperation, and it was about Valerie’s younger sister, Airi Xia.

Katherine needed clarification on why Adrienne wanted to run a background check on Airi. From the moment she knew Valerie, Airi had been part of the Xia family.

"If your assumptions are correct, then Val is in danger."

"Things started going downhill for the Xia family since the kidnapping incident with Madam Xia. I wouldn’t have bothered if I had not seen Airi Xia doing something suspicious. Val might think I’m sowing discord between her and her sister, but if it was you, I’m sure she’ll listen with a rational mind." Adrienne answered. Among Valerie’s friends, she knew Katherine Shen the longest. She was more familiar with Airi, as she had known both Xia sisters longer.

"Val would be heartbroken if you were right. She and Airi grew up together, and she treated her like a real sister." Katherine looked dejected, but she knew it would be better to clarify whether Airi posed a danger to Valerie.

"What else could we do? It’s not like we can just look the other way when someone wants to harm our friend. " Adrienne turned around to face the other woman.

Katherine looked unapproachable compared to Diana and Stephanie, but Adrienne knew better. She could see how protective Katherine was of her friends and loved ones. This type of person would willingly keep secrets to herself to protect her friends.

"I expect to receive the report tonight," Katherine said before leaving.

A moment later, Irina entered and greeted Adrienne. The entire Gu household was in disarray, and the remaining guests who hadn’t spent the night at the mansion had started to leave one after another.

"You’ve done well, Irina. Did my grandfather give you trouble?" Adrienne asked. Her success wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Irina and her other bodyguards. Of course, Katherine’s participation was also vital, as no one would dare question her integrity after claiming Adrienne had spent the night in her room.
