When Adrienne managed to escape from ’Elysian’ with Alistair’s help, Camilla wasn’t willing to give up and had attempted to ruin her innocence by drugging her. Adrienne quietly observed the woman before her. No matter what time she lived, Camilla’s obsession was like a poison that the older woman could never get rid of.
"Why should I?" She asked in return, gauging Camilla’s reaction. "Father already disowned me as his daughter. Hadn’t he already removed me from the family register? Am I still a granddaughter of the Jiang family?"
A flash of surprise appeared in Camilla’s eyes which Adrienne caught instantly. The older woman tried to hide it but it was too late.
"How could that be, Addie? Don’t take it to heart. Your father has been under a lot of pressure these days and probably let it out on you. I’m sure he didn’t mean what he said at all."
Camilla was blatantly lying to Adrienne’s face, but the latter knew she was hiding her real intention with her gentle and kind words. No matter what Adrienne did or said, her father won’t listen to her. Not that she would force him to acknowledge her.
"Does Grandpa know of it?" She asked instead. Adrienne already knew the answer. She only wanted to confirm things she wasn’t able to do before. "The place would surely be crowded with prominent people in the society and I’m afraid of becoming the topic of the baseless rumors again."
"It’s your grandmother who insisted you should come. Since Mother personally asked me, I cannot turn down her request. I’ll be attending the party as well, so you don’t need to stress yourself over it. I’ll guarantee that there won’t be any mishap."
"I see. Then I have no reasons to decline this invitation from the Gu family." Adrienne looked at her stepmother with a taunting smile.
"Aunt Camilla surely knows how to jest. If something happened during Miss Gu’s party, wouldn’t that bring shame to the Jiang family? However, if I suffer any mishap, you have to pay for it a thousand fold. So Aunt Camilla, are you willing to take responsibility?"
In spite of her calm tone, Camilla, for some unknown reason, couldn’t help but shiver. She felt that Adrienne was giving her a warning, but it was too late as the trap had already been laid. The Jiang family owed a huge sum of money to the Gu family and wasn’t able to settle it on time.
However, who would have known that the young master of the Gu family would be enamored upon seeing Adrienne during Old Master Jiang’s birthday banquet?
The Gu family was willing to settle the problem as long as the Jiang family agreed to make Adrienne join their family as their daughter-in-law. Camilla thought that this little bitch was so lucky. The Gu family came from old money and they had quite a reputation in the industry. Having Adrienne married into such a family would only widen the gap between her and Elise.
However, that Young Master Gu was a well-known dissolute loafer and womanizer. He was infamous for being a lecher with many lovers at his disposal. He was also haughty and mischievous, known to harass the beauties he encountered. He mostly spent his time in pursuit of debauchery and alcohol.
If Elise married such a person instead of Adrienne, only hell and suffering would await her daughter, so Camilla was unwilling. She wouldn’t mind if Adrienne was the one to suffer instead. Not only would it settle the debt the Jiang family had with the Gu family, but it would also help her get rid of Rosemary’s daughter.
"Of course, Addie. Why would you think something bad would happen at the Gu family’s place? It’s a festive occasion after all. Who would dare to make a scene with so many people around?" Camilla finally replied nervously.

No, that’s impossible. Adrienne was only arrogant now because the Zhao family was supporting her, but she had no power on her own to stop what was coming. Since their elders had already made a decision and accepted the deal with the Gu family, her fate was already set. Adrienne arched her brows. With the kind of person Camilla was, it wasn’t hard to suspect that she was up to something. However, Adrienne already knew what the older woman was up to. It was just this time, the entire Jiang family had participated in it. They were willing to put her on the chopping board in order to save themselves.
"The party will be held this coming weekend. You and your cousins should arrive together according to your grandmother’s orders. You see, Addie... I know you hate attending social functions like this, but please don’t make the Jiang family lose its face."
Camilla left once she said her piece, leaving Adrienne’s home in a hurry. As she looked around the place, she noticed several changes had been done since their departure. Adrienne shouldn’t have any money by now, but her home looked grander than the manor Camilla and her family was living in.
She sneered inwardly. Adrienne was just like her mother! How could she forget that Adrienne had the Zhao family’s support now? With that overbearing uncle of hers, it was no wonder Adrienne could act haughty before them!
Camilla stopped and looked back at the massive estate before her, her eyes filled with hatred.
