Chapter 144: My Lucky Star (1)

The Jiang family hadn’t had any communication with Adrienne for weeks. If Adrienne wasn’t attending the same academy as Sierra and Ayla, she would have assumed that they had completely disappeared from her life.

Her relationship with her father continued to worsen and she wondered if he’d already considered removing her name from the family register. Adrienne knew he would disown her at any chance given.

Sure enough, when she received an invitation to attend the founding anniversary of the Jiang Corporation, her father was livid when he saw her attendance. She was casually speaking with the other guests.

Lewis Jiang was introducing Elise as his daughter to his acquaintances when he caught sight of a beautiful young woman dressed in deep red. The young woman had an expressive pair of eyes, lips as red as cherries. Her skin was so smooth and luminous under the bright lights.

Not only was she stunning, she was also charismatic. Lewis could see how the businessmen flocked around her, as if they were vying for her attention, overshadowing Elise’s presence in the massive room. Too bad this young woman crawled out from Rosemary Zhao’s womb.

As soon as Adrienne turned eighteen, she became a thorn on his side that Lewis couldn’t get rid off. Whenever he saw her face, the uneasiness in his heart continued to rise and the words of the monk who deemed her as a ’star of calamity’ played in his mind.

His gaze on his eldest daughter was like a knife cutting through her flesh. It was as if seeing her in a public event like this was shameful and disgusting. He then saw Adrienne excused herself from others and stepped out to use the restroom.

Lewis Jiang used this chance to confront her. He waited outside and grabbed Adrienne’s wrist harshly, pulling her into an empty hallway. Adrienne didn’t resist and merely waited to see what he was up to. He didn’t even give her a chance to utter a word and slapped her hard in the face.

Adrienne’s eyes widened in surprise. She hadn’t anticipated he would hit her as soon as he released her.

"What do you think you’re doing here?!" He sneered at her face. "Laughing and talking like a shameless slut to our guests, do you really have no shame at all?"

"Father keeps on scolding like me this and yet, won’t even see the flaw in his ways. You really are a hypocrite." Adrienne rubbed her swollen cheek, smiling as if she wasn’t bothered by it.

Others would have wept and feel aggrieved being treated like this by their father. Adrienne used to be like them before, but it was different now.

Her father was staring at her with a heavy gaze, looking at her unhappily.

"What did you say?!"

"I said you’re a hypocrite and should give yourself a good look in the mirror. Keeping a mistress behind my mother’s back while taking advantage of her. Now, you wonder how I could act shamelessly? You’ve only yourself to blame, Father."

"You bastard!" Lewis raised his hand and was about to slap her again when Adrienne grabbed him by his wrist.

How could Adrienne allow him to hit her again? The person before her was really rotten down to the core.

"Are you talking about Elise?" She smiled wickedly. "Be careful, Father. You might not want to give others the chance to attack your precious daughter."

Lewis was enraged. He violently pulled his hand back, feeling the stinging pain in his wrist. He was surprised at how strong Adrienne had become. She looked thin and fragile before, but now she had grown into a lone wolf, inciting fear from others.

"Witch." He seethed in anger.

"I only have one daughter and that is Elise." He added with disgust.

Adrienne’s expression turned cold and her father unconsciously stepped back. He broke into cold sweat. There was something amiss with Adrienne.

Adrienne thought that she had already hardened her heart and accepted that she would never have her father’s love. In her past life, no matter how hard she begged him, she only received a cold shoulder in the end.

However, hearing how she was nothing but a stranger from her father’s lips filled her with immense sorrow and grief. Her chest tightened, her entire body filled with coldness she never felt before. Perhaps this would be for the better. Her father’s words effectively remove all remnants of hesitation in her heart. There’s no need for her to regret anything from now on.

A witch...

Adrienne laughed inwardly. So this was how her father viewed her. In his eyes, she could never be a daughter to him. She was the unwanted child from the woman he despised the most.

Her lips curled up sending cold shivers down her father’s spine. Lewis stiffened but said nothing while Adrienne tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ear and sighed. She knew her father’s weaknesses now, so she wasn’t planning to lose this time.

Adrienne couldn’t hold back her laughter, catching her father off guard. There was something sinister on her face as she regarded him.

"Thanks for clarifying this, Father. I’ll keep this in mind. From now on, Father doesn’t need to get involved with me. You better make sure you won’t regret this decision of yours."

She didn’t give him a chance to respond and left in a hurry. Her emotions were in disarray, trying to burst from her chest.

Adrienne wanted to scream. She was in a hurry, immediately asking Irina to drive her to Jinxiu Garden. Her bodyguard looked at her worriedly, but said nothing in return. It was already late at night and there was no doubt her master and his younger siblings were already asleep by this time.

Irina still made a call and informed Butler Cheng of their pending arrival. She wasn’t sure what was spoken between her young mistress and Lewis Jiang as she only witnessed how the latter slapped Adrienne. She wanted to interfere, but Irina was frozen in place as she sensed the darkness in her mistress’s eyes.

It was cold and unyielding and it reminded Irina of Lennox when he was younger. Her master used to have this look whenever he was dealing with his greedy relatives. To think that their future mistress would wield such the same look... Irina was surprised.

When they arrived at the entrance of Jinxiu Garden, the two guards dressed in black suits immediately opened the massive gate that was painted red. Adrienne alighted from the car and rushed inside. She saw Lennox seated on the sofa, waiting for her.

"You’ve never visited us late at night like this." His eyes then caught the redness on her left cheek, indicating that someone hit her. "What brings you here, Addie?"

Irina had reported the incident to him, but seeing the damage left on Adrienne’s face, Lennox’s eyes darkened and was filled with turbulent emotions. He knew the reason Adrienne went to the Jiang Corporation’s founding anniversary event, so he insisted she bring Irina with her. However, Lennox never thought that the one who would harm his wife would be her biological father instead.

Lewis Jiang was truly making an enemy out of him. He was seeking death by harming Adrienne!

Thinking about this, Lennox wanted to beat his father-in-law himself, but he knew that’s not possible. Adrienne would surely not allow him to interfere with her plans. According to Gavin, Adrienne had been painstakingly laying traps for the Jiang family these past weeks, waiting for them to make a mistake before she struck.

This kind of scheme made the two men bewildered. Lennox and Gavin found it odd how certain Adrienne was that her relatives, especially her father, would shoot their own feet without them knowing.

Instead of answering him, Adrienne sauntered towards him and sat beside him. She threw her black purse carelessly on the armchair and kicked her high heels from her feet.

"It’s so late, why aren’t you asleep?" She asked instead.

"How could I sleep in peace knowing something’s bothering you?" Lennox asked in return. The attraction he had on this young woman was illogical, but he found himself already too deep to escape.

When he met Adrienne that day, Lennox had this feeling that he found something he’d been missing all through his life. How was it possible? He wondered. For someone who was born with a silver spoon, almost everything was handed to him with ease.

But with Adrienne... he felt like he had finally found a treasure he had lost for so many years when they met. Lennox wanted to make her completely his, but didn’t want to lose her again so he could only wait.

Adrienne shut her eyes and pressed the spot between her brows. She didn’t have a logical reason for coming straight to Jinxiu Garden, but she didn’t want to return home when her brother wasn’t around. She didn’t want to be reminded of how lonely she was.
