Chapter 140: Forsaken (2)

Adrienne wasn’t sure what to feel knowing that her time to spend with Lennox and his siblings were running out. She didn’t doubt Lennox when he said he’d return to her as soon as he could, but she knew it would take a very long time. Lennox’s feelings for her might wane during that time. She tried to convince herself that it didn’t matter, that it would be better if Lennox found a better woman than her, but her treacherous heart was unwilling to listen.

As someone who’s heart was severely broken by someone in her past life, she should shun any man who could hurt her, but Adrienne found herself drawn to Lennox somehow.

’There must be something wrong with my head.’ Adrienne thought as she rubbed her aching temple. Now that they had managed to secure Scarlett’s custody, only Lennox’s twin brothers were left for her to meet. Once she retrieved them, she had no doubt Gavin would hasten the pace of Lennox’s treatment course.

Lennox had already started his physical therapy, but it wouldn’t be enough to make him walk again. However, it was vital for him to regain his mobility. He will need to retrain his spinal cord, his muscles, and his brain to work together again through specific and repetitive movements.

His current physical therapy routine focused on addressing the strength of his legs, so as to strengthen the legs and avoid the possibility of atrophy from non-usage. Once the doctors operated on his spine, it was expected that he’d also need to undergo locomotor training and the training would focus specifically on learning how to walk again.

The sound of faint footsteps reached Adrienne’s ears and she turned her head only to see Scarlett’s tear stricken face. The girl was dressed in a white blouse and light pink skirt and her small feet were enclosed in white bunny slippers. Scarlett immediately ran towards Adrienne and stopped before her.

"You came." Peals of tears rolled down the girl’s cheek as she clutched the brown teddy bear in her arms. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Adrienne knelt before the girl and wiped Scarlett’s tears. It broke her heart to see Scarlett like this.

"You doubted me?" She asked in a gentle tone. "Your brothers and sister couldn’t wait to meet you, especially Noah."

She told the girl about her siblings that Scarlett was never aware of. Scarlett thought that her father disliked her too and had abandoned her. She recently found out that her father died from an accident and her older brother wanted to raise her on his behalf.

"Are you sure you’d like to come with us? Don’t you think your mom would be sad without you?" Adrienne asked. She wanted to see if the girl still had some lingering attachments to her mother. Even Samantha had a hard time letting go of her abusive mother before and Adrienne wouldn’t be surprised if Scarlett was the same.

Scarlett shook her head, but her eyes reflected her sadness. She lowered her head and started sobbing.

"Mom said I could go with you. I’ve never seen her this happy before." She murmured.

Even without saying, the girl understood why her mother was allowing her to leave with Adrienne and Gavin. Her eyes shone with tears and she could only bury her face in the back of her doll’s head as she cried.

Gavin looked away, not knowing how to deal with a crying child. He also felt bad for Scarlett, but didn’t know what to say to make her feel better. It irked him that Richard Qin had failed tremendously as a father to his children. Scarlett Qin might not be lacking in material things, but she didn’t have anyone who loved her sincerely.

Adrienne pulled the girl to her embrace and allowed Scarlett to cry to her heart’s content. She didn’t say any word and held the girl tight instead. In her past life, the only reason she was able to keep her sane mind was because Myrtle was beside her. Everything went down the hill when she and her mother died, leaving her on her own.

She never wanted anyone to experience such loneliness, especially a young girl like Scarlett. She and Lennox might not be able to give her the love she needs, but they could protect anyone, even her mother, from hurting her.

"Can I bring Mr. Teddy’s friends with us? Would my brother be mad if I brought a lot to his house?" Scarlett asked once she ceased her crying. Her eyes were already red and Adrienne knew this won’t be the last time the girl would have a breakdown.

"I’m sure your brother won’t mind," Adrienne replied. "He has already asked someone to prepare a massive room for you. It should be enough to house all your toys, Mr. Teddy and all his friends. The more the merrier, isn’t it?"

"O-okay..." The girl finally calmed down.

When Divine returned, she had a wide smile plastered on her face, as if her daughter’s departure was something to celebrate. Gavin remained silent while Scarlet stood next to Adrienne and held her hand. She didn’t dare to look at her mother’s face.

"Scarlett, don’t ever forget what I’ve told you earlier, okay? Mr. Si said we’re not allowed to see and talk to each other ever again and I agree with him. Don’t make things difficult for me and your brother. If someone dares to ask if I’m your mother, you should deny me!" Divine said in a warning tone.

"Enough!" Adrienne said, her eyes narrowing dangerously. For Divine Yang to dare to spout such words before her and Gavin, she was really daring and stupid.

"Since Miss Yang has already gotten what she wanted, there’s no need for us to stay here anymore. We’ll arrange someone to pick up Scarlett’s things. As for the contract, you better not forget, Miss Yang. The one who forsaken Scarlett and broke the ties with her is you. Whatever happens in the future, you don’t have any right to interfere with her life."
