Chapter 115: Stepping Back (1)

Abigail thought that Adrienne would ask her help to deal with her cousin, Ayla Jiang, but as she listened to the young lady’s words before her, she realized that Adrienne had her own ways of dealing with her enemies. Other mothers-in-law would surely disapprove of such a scheming woman marrying their son, but Abigail wasn’t sure what to feel about it.

On the one hand, she was satisfied that Adrienne wasn’t taking advantage of their relationship, but a part of Abigail couldn’t help but be wary of her future daughter-in-law. She knew Adrienne held a deep grudge toward the Jiang family, but she was too conniving. She didn’t have any filial piety left, even for her father.

Thinking about it, this attitude of Adrienne’s would surely not put her at a disadvantage once she meets the Qin family. Lennox needed a woman who could stand independently and not easily succumb to the Qin family’s pressure. Even Abigail had been a victim of it, and it cost her her heart and her future. She didn’t want Adrienne to experience the same pain she suffered.

However, for Adrienne, it was much better if she was honest with Lennox and his mother. She intended for them to be wary of her and not to form a deeper attachment to her. It would be easy for Lennox to find a new wife once they divorced by doing this. What kind of man or mother-in-law would tolerate a woman who could abandon her family and wage an all-out war against them?

Adrienne never expects anything from them and would rather deal with her sworn enemies alone. The traps had already been laid, now, the only thing she needed was to wait for those people to take the bait before proceeding with her plans.

As for Ayla Jiang... Well, Adrienne wasn’t in a hurry. She had expected that her revenge would take some time, and she was willing to wait no matter how long it would take, as long as it would be fulfilled. She remained silent as the memories from her previous life replayed in her mind.

How could Adrienne move on and forgive Ayla? Ayla had shown her fake kindness, and Adrienne deluded herself into thinking that Ayla was a trustworthy person who would never betray her. However, in the end, wasn’t this the same cousin who had coveted her husband and had an affair with him behind her back? Regardless of the marital problems she and Alistair had, Ayla shouldn’t have gotten between them.

Ayla had attained such outstanding fame and wealth in her previous life, and though Adrienne had intervened and changed many things since her rebirth, she knew there were things she could not change as they were already written in stone. She was also aware that there would be great consequences on her part if she dared to derail it.

It might have come a little later than it should, but Ayla was still scouted and was offered to become a talent at Starmedia. Ayla would reach the peak of her fame in three years. Everyone couldn’t get enough of her by that time. However, who would have thought that despite her success, she would choose to become someone’s mistress? Adrienne would have tried to understand her cousin, but she would have never guessed that the rumored married man was none other than her husband.

Adrienne smiled bitterly as she thought of it. It wasn’t lost to Lennox, who wondered what made her act like this. It was rare for him to see Adrienne looking at a loss and realize there were still things he had yet to know about the young lady before them.

"If that’s what you want, Addie. I won’t meddle with your cousin’s career and leave her be. However, it doesn’t mean that I would show her any support." Abigail responded, seeing that Adrienne had made up her mind. She could only hope Adrienne wouldn’t regret her decision someday.

"You don’t need to worry, Mom. I’m sure Addie knows what she’s doing and already has a plan to deal with them. I’m more worried about myself, now that my Uncles and Aunt are paying attention to my recovery. They even dared to bribe one of my doctors to put me under drug-induced psychosis."

Adrienne stared at him in shock. It was only now she understood how wicked his relatives were. She was worried about what could happen to the children if they learned that Lennox had taken them under his wing.

As if Lennox could read what she was thinking, he said, "It’s alright, Addie. They haven’t noticed what we’re doing." He assured her.

"I have been complacent these past weeks. I should go find the rest of the children before they notice them." Adrienne hardened her jaws. "But are you alright? Did the doctor agree to betray you?"

"Fortunately, he came to me and told me what had happened. Dr. Xuan chose to resign and went overseas to avoid their rage. However, I’m certain they will attempt it again someday."

"You are already like this, but they still have the guts to harm you? Nox, it would be better to listen to the doctors’ suggestion. Once Addie has secured the custody of the children, you should bring them and continue your recovery overseas." Abigail commented before glancing at Adrienne. Though the medicine in their country was already advanced, the Qin family was threatened by Lennox’s existence. He’ll never be able to recover fully if they keep nipping on his heels.

"You can also bring Addie with you if you’re worried for her safety." She added with concern. If things went south, Adrienne wouldn’t be spared.

Adrienne shook her head. It would be the best option for Lennox and his siblings, but that wouldn’t be the case for her. She cannot abandon her brother and unconscious mother just to escape the prying eyes of the Qin family.

"I can’t join you." She admitted. "But I agree with Mom, Len. Stepping back doesn’t mean you are weak. It’s also a defensive move that will give you the advantage to advance further."
