Chapter 116: Stepping Back (2)

Lennox knew what Adrienne meant, but the thought of him leaving her vulnerable against the Jiang and Qin families didn’t sit well with him. How could he leave when he knew someone might target her during his absence? Also, they weren’t married yet. What if Adrienne changed her mind and said she didn’t want to marry him once he returned? What if she fell for another man and married him instead?

The thought that crossed his mind sent Lennox into a cold fury. However, he didn’t dare to say such things to Adrienne, thinking that she would find it uncomfortable and might choose to distance herself from him. He laughed inwardly, thinking how he was being foolish before her. He had never thought he would be attracted to a young woman like Adrienne Jiang who was as cold as ice.

Lennox didn’t know when it started, but Lennox had been thinking of Adrienne more these days. However, it was obvious that she didn’t feel the same towards him. If anything, she held his siblings in higher regard compared to him. Adrienne only saw him as a partner that shared a common goal with her.

"Have you decided who you will approach next?" He asked, trying to suppress the uneasiness in his heart.

"I’m thinking of approaching Liam this time. Mr. Si has already given me the details I need and I know where I could find him, but isn’t he already eighteen as well? He might resist coming with me." Adrienne answered.

Abigail nodded in agreement. "He might give you problems instead. If he’s not willing, then we can’t do anything to force him. I heard from Gavin that Liam was already a bit unhinged even when his mother was alive."

"We won’t know until Adrienne meets him." Lennox replied. "If he could be responsible for himself, then we can leave him be. However, I won’t be able to protect him from my uncles and aunt once they deemed his existence as a threat to their inheritance."

"Perhaps this rebellious streak only started after his mother’s death." Adrienne said as she realized that she and Liam Qin might have some similarities. According to the report Gavin had collected, Liam was the only child and he used to have a great relationship with his mother. He was the first child Richard Qin had out of wedlock, but even so, compared to his other half-siblings, he lived comfortably.

Now, Liam was addicted to gambling and car racing. He was usually spotted at race car courses, being followed by women. Adrienne needed to figure out how to convince him to seek shelter at Lennox’s home.

"Would you be fine on your own? Should I ask Gavin to accompany you?" Lennox was worried that Liam might do something to Adrienne. The young man had started to have an interest in alcohol and women, and together, those were deadly factors to add to his car racing.

Lennox was also rebellious in his younger years and experienced the same thing Liam was going through now. He was so angry with his father that he found ways to infuriate him and spite him by going against his will. It took a lot of effort on his mother’s part to bring him back to the right path.

"Thank you for the concern, but I can deal with it. I’ll bring my two bodyguards with me if you’re still worried. You shouldn’t underestimate what Hunter and Uncle Shark can do."

Three days later, Adrienne found herself at the back of her car as they made their way at the racecourse where Liam Qin was. She looked out the window, seeing dark clouds covering the night sky making everything look gloomy. Lightning streaked across the dark sky while strong winds rustled the trees around them. Those youngsters were really daring to even dare to race in this kind of weather.

The racecourse was set up at a nearby mountain area and it was considered as one of the dangerous tracks known to many. It spiraled along the mountain and the road had narrow paths and dangerous curves near the cliff. One wrong move could send the driver and their car down to the raging river below.

Even experienced drivers wouldn’t dare to speed up on that road, not to mention with this rain, racing along this course would be lethal. The rain can affect the driver’s visibility, roadside awareness, and ability to control their vehicle.

’What were they thinking when they decided to race tonight?’ Adrienne thought. ’They must be tired of living.’

In her previous life, she and Myrtle frequently visited this place to support one of their brothers, but who would have thought that she would come here tonight to see Lennox’s brother instead.

Heavy rain continued to pour down, but with Uncle Shark taking the driver’s seat, the drive was fluid and smooth. Adrienne could tell that the man was also an experienced driver.

When they arrived at the bottom of Shenyu Mountain, they found a small crowd and several cars parked on the side. Adrienne stepped out of the car, wearing a red leather jacket over her white shirt and black skirt while her feet were enclosed in white sneakers. She was chewing a bubblegum and popping it as she listened to the youngsters’ discussion.

"Liam, the rain is getting worse. The road would be slippery. It’s dangerous." A familiar face Adrienne hadn’t seen in a long time came into view. This was Brother Mack. He was the oldest amongst the crowd and he was the person who was in charge of betting matters. He usually hosted several racing events and made a lot of money from it.

He might look shabby and arrogant, but Adrienne knew he had a big heart. When Myrtle went missing, he was one of the people who helped her track her friend. He was the least person Adrienne thought would help her, but he did.

Liam eyed him and smiled arrogantly. "If you’re afraid to lose, just say so."
