Chapter 114: A Fallen Star (2)

Adrienne was oblivious to what her father and Camilla were thinking. She was reading a book at home when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and immediately answered it. Since her last visit to Jinxiu Garden, she hadn’t been initiating any conversations with Lennox, either with phone calls or direct messages.

It wasn’t because she didn’t want to start another argument with her brother, but she felt like she was starting to get too deeply entangled with Lennox Qin. Adrienne wasn’t oblivious to it, but she wasn’t pleased with how comfortable she was whenever she was with him.

"Is there something that you need?" She asked, not bothering to greet him.

"Hello to you too, Addie," She heard Lennox’s amused voice on the other end of the line. "You’re still the same as always. If I don’t agree to marry you, I doubt you’ll be able to convince another man who would be willing."

"Is that so?" She asked in response, shutting the book, completely forgetting what she just read.

"Sorry, it was a bad joke." Lennox’s voice immediately changed. "It would be my honor to have you as my wife."

Adrienne then heard him mumble, "Are you satisfied now, Mom?"

She couldn’t stop a smile spreading on her lips. "You don’t have to tell such lies to your mother, Len. So what do I owe you for giving me a call all of the sudden?" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

"Can’t I call my fiancée without a reason?" Lennox said in defense. "I heard from Gavin you invested a hefty amount in Huayi. Addie, are you sure about this?"

"I have faith in my future husband. If this venture fails, who else am I going to blame but you?"

Lennox was stunned into silence. If it wasn’t for his silent breathing, Adrienne wouldn’t know that he was still on the line.

"I’m moved that you think so highly of me, Addie." She could sense Lennox’s sincerity this time. She could feel an odd feeling worming in her heart, but Adrienne decided to suppress it.

No. It wasn’t odd and unfamiliar, because she knew what it was. Adrienne was aware that Lennox was different from Alistair, but she didn’t dare to put her heart at stake again. Just look at how badly it ended for her when she followed her heart and got blinded by it. She failed to see the glaring red flags, deluding herself that Alistair loved her.

Adrienne shook her head and laughed inwardly. When she thought about it, what Lennox was showing her was merely kindness and respect she should have received from a partner. She must be overthinking things between them. What she felt about him must be the same.

Adrienne settled with this idea and didn’t dare to think more of it. "Is this the only reason you called me?"

"No, not really. Sam and Noah have been pestering me, asking why you haven’t visited and Mom wants to discuss something with you in person. Are you free to meet?"

Now, that immediately piqued Adrienne’s attention. Why would Abigail Li want to meet her? Adrienne couldn’t think of any reason.

The next day, after school, she asked Hunter to bring her to Jinxiu Garden. Since her future mother-in-law wanted to have a word with her, Adrienne couldn’t let her wait for too long. When she arrived, she found Lennox having afternoon tea with his mother in the garden. His complexion looked better than it did the last time she’d seen her.

"Are you okay now?" She asked as she joined them at the table. An empty cup was waiting for her and Adrienne poured herself a drink.

"Yes, the pain is tolerable now since the doctor changed the medicine. I suppose I could get used to it." Lennox replied before regarding his mother. "Should I give you and Addie some privacy?"

"No, there’s no need. It’s not that confidential anyway. I just wanted to hear Addie’s opinion before I make a decision." His mother answered, while giving Adrienne a slight smile. She had never shown any kind of displeasure towards Adrienne, but she believed that the young woman before her was just unlucky to be entangled in her son’s affairs.

"Then what is it that you want to say, Mom?" Adrienne still wasn’t used to regarding another woman as her mother, but she couldn’t possibly disrespect Abigail by not acknowledging her as her mother-in-law.

"One of your cousins, Ayla Jiang, was recently scouted to our company. I want to know your opinion on it. I can easily get rid of her and put a stop to her career in the showbiz industry if you want. Since the Jiang family has offended you, I don’t plan on going easy on her."

Adrienne chuckled before taking a sip from her cup, hiding the sinister smile on her lips.

"Mom, are you willing to do such a thing for me?" She couldn’t help but ask. If she had a strong backing like Abigail Li in her previous life, would things be different?

Alas, Adrienne didn’t want to ponder about it. Her foolish self wouldn’t be able to understand such things even if it was already in front of her and at her disposal. However, how could she let this chance slip from her hand?

In her previous life, Ayla was indeed scouted to become a young talent in Starmedia. She attained such fame until her father’s affair came to light.

"You’ll be my daughter-in-law soon. Do you think I would allow anyone to harm you?" Abigail answered with a straight face.

Seeing her expression, Adrienne thought that Lennox took after Abigail despite not being raised by her.

"But Mom, I don’t plan on going easy on the Jiang family. Obstructing Ayla’s career would be too easy. If anything, I want her to rise to the top. Let her delude herself and think that she had everything in the world. Fame, money, everyone’s affections. The higher she climbs, the greater her fall."

As she said these, Lennox and Abigail could only look at her in astonishment.
