Chapter 49: An ambush

Amelia sat inside the car with Aaron, Ryan, and Derrick as they took her to the Ashborn pack so she could check their mother and see if she could help cure them.

They had consulted many healers in the past, but this was like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them. So many approached them with greedy wishes. While the triplets were ready to pay them, the fact that the healers didn’t take any guarantees put them off.

They didn’t want anyone to play with their mother’s health.

Killing a healer who came to cure their mother would also raise political concerns with the council, and thus, they didn’t take the process.

However, something told them they could trust Amelia, and that was exactly what they were doing.

Amelia looked out of the window at the passing cars.

She had already called Uncle Harrison to let him know she would be leaving with the triplet alphas, who would drop her off at the market later, and he could pick her up from there.

She had dropped a message to Miss Quinn because she didn’t want to annoy King Cyrus directly.

A soft smile appeared on her lips as she remembered their accidental kiss.

Her cheeks turned red, and she cleared her throat to control her thoughts.

Amelia was happy. Though King’s suspicion of her intentions was as clear as daylight, she could see that he was softening to her presence, and that was everything she needed to keep pushing hard.

"Are you okay? Should I turn on the AC?" When he saw her flushed cheeks, Derrick asked, and Amelia snapped out of her thoughts before shaking her head.

"No. That’s fine," she said, rolling down the window a little to feel the cold air caress her ski, which would calm her better.

"The weather is nice," Derrick said.

Ryan glared at Derrick from the rearview mirror, and the guy raised his brows in defense.

"Hey, I am just stating facts. No need to look at me like that. I am not trying to flirt with her. She made it perfectly clear that she has no intention of having any business with me. She even used the excuse of being married to do so," Derrick said.

Ryan looked at the girl from the corner of his eye.

Her marriage.

He remembered she had said she was married to him, too. Was it really a defense mechanism to keep boys away from her? Did that mean he was off her list even if she didn’t hate him, too?

For some reason, the thought annoyed Ryan a little.

There was no way he would believe she was married.

She was only seventeen, and it would be illegal to get married at that age, whether healers or werewolves. Even the age of finding your mate is 18.

Ryan thought, concluding that Amelia was lying.

As the car turned onto the highway to the cut leading to their pack, they suddenly saw a sharp object at a distance.

Their alpha instincts immediately worked, and Aaron turned the car right in time, making Amelia fall into Ryan’s arms.

She looked embarrassed but had no time to think about these things.

Amelia sat upright, holding onto the support with all her might as Aaron turned the car toward the forest and twisted it again.

Their eyes widened when they saw nearly 20 arrows on the road.

"That was a close call," Derrick said. Without saying anything, he stepped out of the car and turned into his massive wolf, his protective side taking over.

Though he was flirty and everything, he was a caring alpha for his pack and would do anything to keep his people safe.

An attack so close to their pack couldn’t be taken lightly.

Amelia was about to ask what was going on when she felt a pricking pain in her wrist. She held her hand, covering the mark with her right hand, when she saw it was starting to glow.

’What do you think? Did it work? Would it be enough to scare her? This should do. They will go to the road to check up on the arrows and see the message clearly.’

’I don’t know, brother. The attack this close to the pack can raise concern with the royals.’

’Don’t be scared. There is no way they would know who did it. Let’s go from here. Our work is done. The alphas would start searching the area and call their team soon. We need to leave before that.’

Amelia opened her eyes, her head hurting.

What were those voices in her head? What was that weird, blurry scene that appeared in her head?

She looked around and noticed that the blurry trees in her mind seemed similar to the forest they were currently in.

What was happening? She wondered.

"We will check," Ryan said, catching her attention.

Ryan and Aaron left towards the road, and just like the words in her mind, they picked one of the arrows. They saw a note attached to it.

Amelia removed the hand that was covering her left hand and looked at the glow, which was dimmer than before.

It was as if she were under some kind of manipulation. Her mind was telling her to step out of the car and follow the area that she saw in her mind.

She stepped out of the car and walked a distance to see what her intuition was telling her.

Just like she had seen in her mind, there were a couple of guys with bows and arrows in their hands.

She didn’t confront those guys; she just stood there, hidden at some distance, her heart beating at an indescribable pace.

What was going on? How could she see this exact scene in her head before it even happened? It was hard for Amelia to believe what was happening.

Was this for real? Were these people real?

At the same time, Aaron paused, picked up the note, and read it.

"What’s written there?" Derrick asked as he walked to his brothers.

"If I were you, I would know my place. Girls shouldn’t poke their nose where it doesn’t belong," Aaron read it out loud for his brothers.

The indication was clear.

This attack, or should they call it a warning, was for Amelia, not for them and their pack.

But why? Who did she mess with that they took such extreme measures and didn’t even care that she was with three alphas before planning this ambush?

"Where is she?" Aaron suddenly asked, and Ryan turned to look at the car.

The back door was open. Amelia was nowhere to be seen.

His heart skipped a beat. She was there just a couple of minutes ago.

Did someone take her?

Without thinking twice, he changed into his wolf, along with Aaron, and they ran towards the forest to look for her. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

As Amelia’s heartbeat increased, she decided it was better to leave the area before she got caught.

She turned around to leave, but accidentally put her foot on the dried leaves.

The crunching sound she made immediately caught the guy’s attention.

Her eyes widened, and she gulped.

The men who came to warn her looked at her, their pupils dilated because she saw their faces.

Their leader clearly told them not to show anyone their faces. Though this time, they weren’t part of the agency, this task was supposed to decide their future.

"Catch her!" The man shouted, and Amelia placed her hand on her dagger, ready to counter.
