Reborn as a Mind-Reading Empress-Chapter 710: Her Considerate Husband
After all, the sooner the problems in Sibruh and its neighboring territories are resolved, the sooner they would be able to see each other.
Arabella was about to get some documents to work on when Alwin grabbed her hand.
"That’s enough work for you today. His Majesty said to make sure you sleep before midnight. You should retire to your room now," Alwin said.
"Eh? But Ferdinand is out there working hard. How can I just go to bed?" Arabella pointed out. She was about to say more but Alwin spoke again before she could.
"The two of you are different. Do not forget you are human," Alwin said as if he had to remind her about it.
"I know I am. But Ferdinand is too. He is in a human body so he is human for now," Arabella pouted.
"Don’t be stubborn. There’s still a huge difference. His Majesty can work straight for a week or more without sleep even in his human body since he trained it to reach the apex condition. Moreover, he still has his immense mana even in his human body so he recovers from fatigue quickly. Unlike you who could die easily from not sleeping properly."
"Tsk. Fine," Arabella had nothing more to counter that so she simply pouted and let go of the documents.
’I’ll just do some planning in my room.’
"I know exactly what you are thinking. It’s so obvious in your face," Alwin cut off her thoughts.
"Huh? What are you talking about?" Arabella pretended to be innocent.
"You are going to do something else in your room aren’t you?" Alwin had her figured out.
’Is it really that obvious in my face? Is this the ability given to him when he was reborn? To be able to read what I’m planning early on so he would be able to stop if I had evil plans?’
Arabella was beginning to have conspiracy theories.
"Go to bed and sleep as you are told or I am the one who gets scolded if you have huge eyebags and dark circles under your eyes tomorrow. His Majesty will find traces of my mana on you if I heal you," Alwin stopped her plans.
"Alright. Alright," Arabella raised her hands in surrender.
She knew Alwin feared getting scolded by Ferdinand so she did not insist anymore. She could not keep causing trouble for her only ally who knew of the tragedy of the past.
’My arms and back are starting to ache anyway,’ Arabella did a bit of stretching before she finally left her study and retired for the night.
* * *
Arabella stirred when she felt familiar huge hands hold hers.
’Is Ferdinand back?’
She felt a caress and a lingering peck at the back of her hand and she knew it was her husband indeed.
"Ferdinand?" She inquired lazily in a low voice.
There was no reply. Instead, he paused and did not make any sound or movement but she felt his gaze on her face.
’It’s him, right? Why is he not saying anything?’
Arabella covered her mouth as she yawned and finally opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry but it gradually cleared up. It was her husband indeed.
Seeing him first thing upon waking up made her smile.
"Sorry, did I wake you? You should go back to sleep. It’s still early," Ferdinand said in a low gentle voice.
Arabella delayed her response and stretched her limbs instead before saying, "I’m fully awake now though."
Ferdinand smiled at that and kissed the back of her hand one more time.
Arabella sat up to give a good look at her husband.
’He is fully dressed. Did he just drop by in my room before heading out again? Or did he just return?’
Ferdinand understood her look and said, "I came to see you before going back. We still have other territories to take care of."
Arabella felt somewhat disappointed. With his words earlier, it meant he would have not woken her so they could talk before he leaves again.
It had just been several hours since they parted after lunch yesterday but it felt too long. Yet, here he was ready to depart again.
If she did not wake up, she would not have had the chance to see him before he left.
Arabella eyed her husband from head to foot. She wanted to give him a hug and say, "I missed you."
But she did not want to seem clingy when he had matters to attend to. She did not want to distract his focus either. Thus, she simply said instead, "I see. I heard the reports. How is it going?"
"Everyone is doing their best. Thanks to you hearing the Marquess’ thoughts, we learned about it before it escalated. I have to oversee it myself since this matter could lead to a tragedy if not for the empire if not taken care off immediately. We have to prevent it from spreading far and wide since it would be terrible if it gets worse. I’ve seen civilizations die out due to situations like this," Ferdinand explained.
’I see. He had prior experience indeed as Alwin surmised.’
"Entire civilizations? Does that mean the pest and diseases affecting crops spread too wide?" Arabella inquired.
From his past explanations to her, he had clarified that one civilization he refers to meant humanity of several generations who lived in this world at a certain time before ceasing to exist.
"Yes. If no proper control would be found, the problem with pests and diseases could span for decades or until there was nothing left for them to feed on. Not just crops but all flora in the surroundings could end up afflicted and dying. It can lead to droughts, food shortage, and famine. If spread too widely, it also leads to wars as people try to procure the lacking resource wherever they could. And thus, leads to further death and hunger spreading. Yet if the main problem was not solved, it would continue on wherever they go until nothing was left. They would be the carriers themselves and lead their own civilization to doom."
Ferdinand shook his head as he thought about it. He avoided looking into Arabella’s eyes so she would not see what he had witnessed.
