Chapter 903: Chapter 461 Disagreement_2

"So, your grandpa, and that Aunt Ping," Lian Shouxin frowned deeply, visibly conflicted and unwilling, but still forced himself to ask Lian Jizu, "Did your grandpa really take Aunt Ping in?"

"That... when I left, nothing was finalized yet. I have no idea how things stand now." Lian Jizu replied.

Lian Shouxin, Lady Zhang, Lady Zhao, and the rest were stunned, the news hitting them hard.

"Jizu, you’re telling me that sneaky way you handled this, coming back without saying a word to us, and leaving Grandma behind – you think you’re justified?" Lian Manman wasn’t one to be easily fooled and coldly confronted Lian Jizu.

"Jizu, you’re not being honest. Even now, you’re still trying to trick us," Lian Manman said. "If you wanted to calm Grandma down, why did you have to send her all the way to Thirty Mile Camp? Was Taicang not good enough? Was the Zheng Family not a perfect fit? She’s full of anger, and you just abandoned her on her own. Aren’t you afraid something bad might happen to her? You said you’d bring her back in a few days, but I think, seeing how sneaky you’re acting today, hurriedly slipping back here, you never planned to bring Grandma back. More likely, you’re going to leave Grandpa behind next, right?"

"Wh-what kind of talk is this?" Lian Jizu’s face flushed red.

"Jizu, is that really your plan? Whose idea was it—your father’s, your mother’s, or your own?" Lian Shouxin pointed at Lian Jizu and demanded.

"No, no, absolutely not," Lian Jizu hastily waved his hands in denial. "I came back in a rush because I wanted to study. The exams are coming up."

"Jizu, about the situation in Taicang, that’s out of our hands. But since you brought Grandma back, you’re staying here. Studying is important, sure, but it’s not more important than your duty of filial piety. You’ll stay and take care of Grandma. Once someone from Taicang is sent to replace you, then you can return." Lian Manman said.

"That’s... that’s impossible." Lian Jizu stood up abruptly.

"That’s settled," Lian Shouxin slammed the table.

"Jizu, right now, I bet the word about this has already spread all around here. Everyone in these ten villages knows you. You think you can leave? Our neighbors won’t let you leave." Wu Lang interjected.

"It... it’s not my fault... I still need to take the exams..." Thinking back to the earlier scene where he was dragged back, Lian Jizu, defeated, dropped heavily back into his chair.

The Lian Shouxin family was adamant about not letting him leave, and truth be told, he couldn’t just get up and walk away. His fourth uncle’s family, now based in Thirty Mile Camp, certainly had the influence and connections to ensure that.

As they continued arguing inside, a knock at the door could be heard from outside.

Lian Yeye went out and after a short while returned, leading Chunzhu’s Wife into the room.

"Big Sister told me to pass along a message: Aunt Zhou’s back and she wants you all to head over immediately," Chunzhu’s Wife announced as she entered.

For tenant farming households, close ties were customary; even without blood relations, they referred to each other in friendly, familial terms. The "Big Sister" Chunzhu’s Wife mentioned was Lian Lanlan, while "Aunt Zhou" referred to Lady Zhou.

With Lady Zhou calling for them to go over, those in the house exchanged looks with one another. Words weren’t necessary; their thoughts were aligned. They knew full well that Lady Zhou’s return wouldn’t mean peace and quiet – no, she was sure to stir things up daily. And the worst part, Lady Zhou had come back filled with simmering resentment. Who would be at the receiving end of her anger?

Poor Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye.

Lian Manman gave a sympathetic glance to Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye.

Xiao Qi stayed behind to accompany Wu Jiaxing, while the family, with Lian Jizu in tow, headed over to the old Lian Family mansion.

Just as they reached the street corner near the old mansion, they spotted figures moving near the Lian Family gates. People were also coming out from houses on both sides of the street, heading toward the Lian Family Old Mansion. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

From the faint murmurs starting to reach their ears, they could already hear Lady Zhou’s yelling.

It was a familiar sound they hadn’t heard in a while. Lian Manman glanced around, quietly observing. Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye both looked gloomy, their legs as heavy as if weighed down by lead. Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang’s expressions were equally unpleasant. Wu Lang remained calm, while Lian Jizu kept his head down.

As they approached the old mansion’s gates, Lady Zhou’s cries became clearer – she was ranting loudly from the Upper Room. Judging by the vigor in her voice, her health was perfectly intact, Lian Manman concluded, expressionless.

"... You bunch of worthless brats! Where the hell did you all go? Heartless, every single one of you, what a waste to have raised you! I’m just a poor old widow, been back for half a day and not one of you bothers to show your face. What, hiding from me? Scared I’d eat you all? Or scared I’d do something to you? Heartless creatures, rotten to the core!"

"Cold stoves, cold pots, tossing a lone old widow like me here. You’re clearly out to freeze me to death, to starve me to death. Heaven, open your eyes and strike these unfilial beasts down! Everyone, come and see this – the old lady of the Lian Family has fallen into the well, I’ve fallen into the well!"

With that roar, the doors to the Upper Room were suddenly flung open from the inside. Lady Zhou, her gray hair disheveled, stood at the door, appearing like an avenging spirit.

"Jizu, is this what you meant by bringing Grandma back to calm down?" Lian Manman deliberately called out loudly.

The onlookers, hearing Lian Manman’s comment, began whispering among themselves, while Lady Zhou spotted the party arriving.

"You worthless brats! You remembered to show up, huh? Cowards hiding from me, heartless, thunder-stricken wretches..." Lady Zhou slumped down at the door, smacking the doorframe as she wailed louder.
