"Jizu, what exactly happened? Tell the truth," Lian Shouxin said to Lian Jizu.
"Grandmother’s temper—you, Fourth Uncle, Fourth Aunt, and Manman—you all know it well," Lian Jizu said helplessly. "Here’s how it went..."
Ever since Lian Xiuxiu got married, Lady Zhou kept thinking about her. The mother and daughter stayed in close contact, often with Lian Xiuxiu visiting home. But occasionally, wanting to see for herself how her eldest daughter was faring in her marital home, Lady Zhou, although usually disinclined to leave the house, would pay a visit to the Zheng Family.
That day, Lady Zhou had breakfast and took a cart to the Zheng Family home to see her eldest daughter, Lian Xiuxiu. She stayed there until dinner. Lian Xiuxiu intended for Lady Zhou to spend the night at the Zheng Family home, even sending word to the County Magistrate’s office that Lady Zhou wouldn’t be returning that evening.
However, true to her nature, Lady Zhou wasn’t comfortable sleeping away from home and eventually returned home. She arrived when it was already dusk. As soon as she walked into the yard, she spotted Aunt Ping coming out of Old Master Lian’s room. Lady Zhou immediately grew suspicious and stopped Aunt Ping. Then, she stormed into the room and saw that only Old Master Lian was inside. Lady Zhou flew into a rage, assuming that Old Master Lian and Aunt Ping had an inappropriate relationship.
Lady Zhou had a fiery temper and immediately grabbed Aunt Ping, unleashing a torrent of verbal abuse. She called Aunt Ping, a widow, shameless for seducing men, and called Old Master Lian a disgraceful old beast.
"That mouth of Grandmother’s—everyone knows about it. When she started hurling insults, Aunt Ping immediately wanted to smash her head against something and end her life. We struggled to hold her back, but her head did get injured and bled. It was a close call," Lian Jizu told Lian Shouxin. "Fourth Uncle, Aunt Ping isn’t someone we’ve purchased as a servant. If this really led to someone dying, Grandmother would be thrown into prison as compensation. The Old Master wouldn’t remain the County Magistrate anymore... Seeing how heated things became and Aunt Ping’s state, the Old Master knew the gravity of the situation, so he said a few stern words to Grandmother..."
"Grandmother then started threatening to kill herself too, dragging all of us into the verbal assault, and cursed out the entire eighteen generations of the Lian Family ancestors," Lian Jizu continued. "With her loud voice, the commotion attracted plenty of people outside, including officials from the County Yamen who came in to mediate."
"Aunt Ping had initially fainted from smashing her head, but when she regained consciousness, she joined the crying and screaming, claiming she was a clean and decent person who had been wronged by Grandmother and had no way to live anymore. She insisted on dying, saying that while we stopped her that day, she’d find another opportunity later. She also told the mediators that if she died, it wouldn’t be for any other reason but because of this incident, and she begged them to seek justice for her. She alleged that the County Magistrate’s family was bullying her as a widowed and unemployed woman..."
Lian Jizu was a rather dull man, and his recounting of events was equally dry. Even so, Lian Manman could vividly imagine how chaotic the scene must have been.
She could also guess what might happen next.
Even if there truly was nothing between Old Master Lian and Aunt Ping, after such a public spectacle, Aunt Ping might either take her own life or have no choice but to remain entangled with the Lian Family.
Reflecting on Lady Zhou’s personality, Lian Manman rubbed her forehead. She recalled last year when Lady Zhou accused Lady Zhang of stealing eggs without any evidence and despite knowing Lady Zhang’s character well. That vicious tirade and uproar—later, it was proven that no eggs had been stolen to begin with. Yet Lady Zhou not only refused to apologize but showed no remorse or regret whatsoever. If it hadn’t been irrefutably proven and if Lian Manman hadn’t threatened to invite a neighbor’s elderly lady to arbitrate, Lady Zhou would have continued insisting that Lady Zhang had stolen the eggs.
So, was this matter between Old Master Lian and Aunt Ping another instance of the same?
"And then what?" Lady Zhang pressed Lian Jizu for more details.
"Just through back-and-forth talk, the Old Master said he’d find a way to give Aunt Ping an explanation or something," Lian Jizu replied in a low voice.
The issue continued unresolved throughout the night. The next day, Aunt Ping resumed threatening to kill herself, and Lady Zhou kept lamenting. Eventually, Lady Zhou claimed that Old Master Lian had no conscience and that Taicang couldn’t accommodate her anymore; she wanted to go home.
"The Old Master said, ’If you want to go home, then go. No one’s stopping you.’ So he sent me to bring Grandmother back. It was a way to help her calm down. In a few days, she’ll certainly be brought back here again. For now, he wants Great-aunt to stay and look after Grandmother," Lian Jizu concluded.
"I avoided Fourth Uncle and Fourth Aunt because—to be honest—this whole matter is just unpleasant to talk about," he added.
