Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1386 - 707: The Dowry Dispute (Part 3)_2
"The seasonal clothes are all ready, I’ll add a few more bolts of cloth later for future use." Lady Zhang said.
"Big sister, you’ve already added quite a lot, please don’t give too much more." Lady Zhang Wang replied.
"I only have this one niece, I must give her more." Lady Zhang insisted, "In the past, even if I wanted to, I couldn’t give anything. But now, aren’t we living better? The same applies to Caiyun, when Xiao Long and Xiao Hu reach that time, it will be the same for them as well."
During these times, boys were often favored over girls, but not in the Zhang family, where girls were valued and cherished. Lady Zhang’s words about giving her two nephews the same amount as Zhang Caiyun naturally made Lady Li and Lady Zhang Wang happy.
After discussing the styles of Zhang Caiyun’s clothes, they started talking about future arrangements. Lady Zhang wanted them and their children to stay a little longer, but in the end, only Lady Li agreed to stay with Zhang Caiyun.
"I’ll stay here and help with the sewing, and Caiyun’s mother will head back tomorrow." Lady Li said.
Lady Zhang nodded. Lady Li would stay, but Lady Zhang Wang, as the eldest daughter-in-law, needed to return home to help with matters there, which was expected.
As Lady Zhang Wang was leaving the next day, that dinner was prepared especially lavishly. Lian Manman had the kitchen start a pot, and they made a full table of dishes. Everyone ate joyously, drinking tea, and chatting about family matters.
This season, the farmstead families tended to eat dinner early. After the meal, the sun still hung over the western mountain top.
Someone came from outside to report that Lian Shouli had arrived.
"I’ll go see." Lian Shouxin stood up and went to the front yard.
After a while, Lian Shouxin slowly returned.
"What does your third uncle want?" Lady Zhang asked.
"The old residence wants me to go over." Lian Shouxin said to Lady Zhang.
"What’s the matter, why did they send my third uncle as a runner again?" Lian Manman heard and asked Lian Shouxin.
Lian Shouxin glanced at Lady Li and the others sitting on the kang (heated bed-platform), then turned and exited the room. Lady Zhang realized Lian Shouxin had something he couldn’t say in front of Lady Li.
Lady Zhang followed Lian Shouxin outside, and Lian Manman, being perceptive, noticed the couple’s uneasy expression and quietly followed them.
"...the Old Master and Old Madam started fighting, said there’s a street full of people watching." Lian Shouxin whispered to Lady Zhang, "He said no one could persuade them, and my third uncle came looking for me to try and mediate."
Lian Manman blinked her eyes, earlier Lian Shouxin returned from the front yard looking reluctant, dragging his feet, clearly not wanting to get involved in this matter. Not speaking about it in front of Lady Li was out of embarrassment, trying to save face. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
In anyone’s family, when the Old Master and Old Madam, at their advanced age, even with great-grandchildren, engage in a public fight that draws the whole village’s attention, it’s a shameful affair. Lian Shouxin especially didn’t want his mother-in-law, who never even exchanged angry words with his father-in-law, to know about this, which Lian Manman understood well.
"Dad, did you ask my third uncle why Grandpa and Grandma fought?" Lian Manman asked.
"I did." Lian Shouxin hesitated before answering, "It’s nothing major, just trivial matters."
"Did my third uncle not say specifically what the matter was?" Lian Manman pressed further.
Lian Shouxin hesitated, seemingly unsure of whether to speak.
"Dad, it isn’t related to our family again, is it?" Lian Manman guessed, watching Lian Shouxin’s expression, "Is it about Sister Caiyun’s dowry?"
"Is it true?" Lady Zhang read the answer on Lian Shouxin’s face, frowning as she spoke.
Realizing he couldn’t hide from his wife and daughter, Lian Shouxin explained the truth.
"It must be Erlang’s mother, seeing us bring back so many things, guessing they’re all for Caiyun, and guessing we paid for them all. She went back and whispered in front of the Old Master and Old Madam. The Old Master wasn’t bothered, but with the Old Madam’s temper..., they started arguing..." Lian Shouxin explained.
This issue had happened once before. Although it was clarified then, if Lady Zhou stopped guessing and became reasonable, she wouldn’t be Lady Zhou.
"Why is she always so troublesome." Lady Zhang sighed, "Not one bit likable at all."
Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman both remained silent, knowing Lady Zhang was referring to Lady Zhou.
"Let them say what they will, argue if they want. You don’t need to go, the upright doesn’t fear the crooked." Lady Zhang stated.
