Chapter 1385: Chapter 707: The Dowry Dispute (Part 3)

Second watch, asking for pink votes.

"Manman, just returned from the county town?" Lady He entered the door, grinning as she said to Lian Manman, "Oh my goodness, you’ve bought quite a lot of things!"

While talking with Lian Manman, Lady He’s eyes were fixed on the large cart parked there, and the things held by Han Zhong’s wife and others.

Lady He was planning to go to Lian Yeye’s household but as she walked to the main road, she saw Lian Manman’s family’s horse carriage. In the village, there are hardly any secrets, and although Lian Manman’s family lived behind high walls and deep courtyards, what happens on the surface is known to everyone. Lady He naturally knew that Lian Manman family went to the county town with the three women from Zhang Family, and now they are back.

Lady He also knew that the Zhang Family came this time to prepare a dowry for Zhang Caiyun.

Seeing the carriage approaching, Lady He became intrigued, hiding to observe from the sidelines. Eventually, she simply followed behind the carriage, ending up at the entrance to Lian Manman family. Initially, out of fear, she dared not enter, but stealthily peeked in from the main door. As she saw people from Lian Manman family unloading many things from the carriage, Lady He couldn’t hold back any longer.

Being spotted by Lian Manman, Lady He could have sneaked away, but seeing fewer people in the courtyard than before, she daringly went in to take a closer look and inquire about what good things Lian Manman family had brought back.

Lian Manman, seeing Lady He in such a manner, could guess why she was there.

"Han Auntie, where are Da Pang and Second Fatty?" Lian Manman, unwilling to bother with Lady He, spoke to Han Zhong’s wife.

"To the girl, Da Pang and Second Fatty have gone to the fish pond," Han Zhong’s wife replied knowingly, smiling, "They should be back soon. You should return to your room first, I’ll handle things here."

"Alright." Lian Manman nodded and turned towards the main courtyard.

Han Zhong’s wife handed what she was holding to Maid Xiao Xi and walked toward Lady He, planning to send her away.

"Manman, are all these Caiyun’s dowry? That must cost quite a lot, right? Did you buy them?" Lady He urgently asked.

"What do you mean by that?" Lian Manman, having reached the Moon Gate, couldn’t help but stop when she heard Lady He’s words. She turned around and frankly said to Lady He, "My sister Caiyun’s dowry is naturally prepared by my grandmother’s family. They have everything they need; they’re not short of these things. Do you think others’ families are like... you, your family, relying on others for everything?"

"Second Master’s wife, we’re busy here and might not have attended to you properly. Would you please go sit somewhere else for now?" Han Zhong’s wife politely said while pushing Lady He towards the door.

To send Lady He away, mere words are useless; only physical eviction works.

Han Zhong’s wife could barely push Lady He alone; another wife from the kitchen who heard the commotion came out to help. Together, they managed to push Lady He out the door, closed it tightly, and bolted it.

Lian Manman instructed Han Zhong’s wife to watch the door properly. Han Zhong’s wife naturally nodded in agreement; Lian family’s gates were always meticulously guarded. Earlier, because they had just returned, with the horse carriage coming in and out, there was a slight lapse.

Lian Manman returned inside and quietly recounted the incident to Lady Zhang and Lian Shouxin.

"...annoying." Lian Shouxin had never had a good impression of Lady He.

People like Lady He are rare in the countryside, but not nonexistent; every village almost has one or two such individuals. They are shameless, tactless, and indiscreet. However, such people often lack deep scheming or complex calculations. They are just annoying, nosily prying into others’ privacy, and when it comes to their own matters, they can’t keep secrets at all.

"She’s again suspecting me of pandering to my maternal family," Lady Zhang said.

"She can suspect all she wants. Even if you did pander, it’s none of her business," Lian Shouxin replied bluntly.

"I know, just feel it’s annoying," Lady Zhang said.

The family didn’t take the matter to heart and naturally wouldn’t mention it to Lady Li, Lady Zhang Wang, or Zhang Caiyun. Lian Shouxin, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi were in the front courtyard, busy with reading and handling family affairs. Lady Zhang, Lian Zhizhi, Lian Manman, Lady Li, Lady Zhang Wang, and Zhang Caiyun sat round the east room in the back courtyard, taking out pieces of pre-cut clothing material to discuss what patterns to embroider.
