Lian Manman insisted that they shouldn’t indulge Si Lang’s bad habits, but Lian Shouxin felt that Si Lang was no longer young and, considering Old Master Lian’s reputation, wanted to save face for him.
"...He thinks that since my brother isn’t here, he can take over my brother’s role and make decisions for us outside. At first, he’s bullying those below him, but in a couple of days, he’ll start bullying us." Lian Manman said.
Lady Zhang thought for a moment and expressed her support for Lian Manman.
"That kid shouldn’t be indulged. If we save face for him, will he stop doing wrong? If that were the case, the Second Master would have turned good long ago," Lady Zhang said.
The family discussed it for a while and decided to follow Lian Manman’s suggestion.
"...Don’t let it blow up; it won’t look good. Let’s handle it more smoothly. I’ll go talk to him," Lian Shouxin said.
"Dad, none of us needs to step in. Just instruct Han Zhong, and this matter will be taken care of properly," Lian Manman thought for a moment and then said. Lian Shouxin was kind and tender-hearted, so it was not suitable for him to go, and there was no need for her to stand out either.
Having made up her mind, Lian Manman called Han Zhong over and instructed him accordingly.
"...I’ll definitely handle this matter well," Steward Han Zhong nodded repeatedly and promised, arranging things promptly.
In the front courtyard, tables were already being set, and food was about to be served. Si Lang, having washed his hands and face, was about to saunter over to sit by the table. He chose the main table, which was where Lian Shouxin was supposed to sit with the relatives who had come to help.
As Si Lang was about to sit down, Steward Han Zhong came in with a smile, addressed him as Fourth Young Master, and gently pulled him away. Seeing this, as everyone was taking their seats, no one thought anything was amiss.
In the eyes of outsiders, it seemed like Han Zhong had simply asked Si Lang to help deliver some food to the old residence for Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou. However, Lian Manman knew that after reaching the old residence, Han Zhong had sent Si Lang away for a while and spoke privately with Old Master Lian.
Afterward, Han Zhong left, and Si Lang wanted to return with him to Shouxin Family’s place to eat, but Old Master Lian stopped him.
By the time everyone finished lunch, Si Lang still hadn’t returned. Moreover, after that, whenever there was anything to do at Shouxin Family’s place, the old residence never sent Si Lang over again.
This matter was resolved so cleanly and smoothly, without a trace or any disputes, which puzzled Lian Shouxin.
"Dad, you know that my grandpa values face above all. If you spoke, or Han Zhong spoke, it means very different things to my grandpa," Lian Manman smiled and said.
If Lian Shouxin were to address Si Lang’s wrongdoings, Old Master Lian would see it as a family matter. He would scold Si Lang and tell Lian Shouxin he could punish him however he wanted, but at the same time, he would expect Lian Shouxin, as an elder, to tolerate Si Lang.
Family is all one bones and flesh; when the meat is rotten, it’s still in the pot, so it’s not a big deal.
But since it was Han Zhong who spoke, the situation was different. To Old Master Lian, Han Zhong was an outsider, lower in status. Losing face in front of a servant was worse than losing face in front of neighbors. Plus, the fact that Lian Shouxin didn’t speak himself but had Han Zhong speak conveyed a message that Old Master Lian would not fail to understand.
The smooth resolution of the matter satisfied Lian Shouxin, but...
"...it also hurt the Old Master’s face..." Lian Shouxin said, somewhat begrudgingly.
Lian Manman thought privately that if Old Master Lian hadn’t felt that loss of face, Si Lang’s issue might not have been resolved so neatly.
"Dad, you’re overthinking it. From what I’ve seen, over the past half year, my grandpa has become more open-minded. This matter, it wasn’t my grandpa who caused Si Lang to behave badly, and he’d be the most annoyed by such a person. It’s not like my grandpa asked him to do wrong, so he shouldn’t overthink it." Though that was her thought, Lian Manman still comforted Lian Shouxin this way.
"Indeed, each matter stands on its own. Everyone knows the old master is not the same as them," Lady Zhang added.
"Dad, the wheat has been harvested. We need to dry it and thresh it quickly. We also have to gather the wheat straw from the fields swiftly, so it doesn’t delay the planting of the second crop..." Lian Manman reminded Lian Shouxin.
"Right, these tasks need to be done quickly," Lian Shouxin nodded and went out to organize the work with the long-term workers. At his core, Lian Shouxin was a genuine farmer. Thus, to him, the family’s farm work and livelihood were the most important, and other matters took a back seat.
