Chapter 313: The Village 4

Fiona elbowed her assistant without looking at her.

The assistant took out her cell phone and pretended to be sending a message. Without lifting her face, she angled the camera and secretly took photos of Princess Amaya eating the fried duck without inhibitions.

Luciano glared at Fiona and the assistant. He tapped something at his watch before he resumed eating.

Stephane coughed awkwardly. He wanted to take back his earlier praise of how Princess Amaya had become so refined in her eating habits.

"This duck is very delicious. Even better compared to the most expensive fried chicken I ate back in Usturia." She turned around and smiled at the woman. "Your cooking skills are superb."

The woman in her mid-forties with her hair neatly tied in a bun smiled widely. She was on cloud nine. The the Princess liked her cooking!

"Thank you, Princess, for your kind words. I am happy that you like the food."

Stephane could not take it anymore. He asked for a kitchen knife so he could cut up the duck into bite-size pieces.

The woman hesitated. The duck was intentionally not cut because it was their tradition to share and eat the duck with bare hands.

"It is okay, Professor Gray. I read from this province’s history that traditionally, this is how they eat this kind of delicacy. You can try it. It is very delicious." Princess Amaya took another bite after speaking. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

In the few seconds that Stephane hesitated, Luciano pinched off another leg and placed it in front of Amaya.

"Princess, eat some more."

Stephane and Fiona looked at Luciano in disbelief. How could he be so presumptuous and offer food to the princess using his bare hands? However, after a closer look, Stephane noticed that Luciano was wearing disposable gloves that were so transparent and fit perfectly in his hands, that they weren’t noticeable unless you take a closer look.

"How audacious! How could you, a bodyguard use your hand to pick food for the princess?" Fiona spoke in a loud voice forgetting that she was on a livestream.

"He is wearing disposable gloves," Amaya replied on behalf of Luciano. ’Even if he used his bare hands, I would not mind. After all, in the past, we often shared meals using our bare hands.’ Amaya added silently.

The exchanges between the two ladies were heard over the livestream.

’Is that the Princess of Lireya?’

’Come on! Point your camera on her. We want to see her.’

Fiona’s assistant who was monitoring the livestream whispered something to Fiona and then to the cameraman.

The man pointed his camera at the fried duck in front of the Princess. The duck was missing both of its legs.

The cameraman wanted to focus his camera on the princess but did not dare to do so. He could lose not only his job but also his life.

Princess Amaya thought for a while and nodded at the cameraman. The man was surprised but excitedly adjusted his camera and focused it on Princess Amaya enjoying the duck.

"This is Legunes’ special delicacy and is cooked only on special occasions like weddings and when there are important guests. The chicken or duck is marinated overnight using a special marinade unique to this village. The duck is so delicious, especially when you eat it with your bare hands. You even want to lick the bones." Princess Amaya, who was looking at the camera, even demonstrated by finishing off the meat attached to the leg bone.

The people on the internet watching Fiona’s livestream exploded. Most of them praised Princess Amaya for being down-to-earth and doing what commoners like them do.

The assistant’s face turned ugly. She whispered something to Fiona. Fiona’s face turned green. She lost her appetite. She excused herself and left, followed by the cameraman, her bodyguard, her assistant, and her servant.

"I am also full. Thank you for your hospitality." Princess Amaya thanked the village chief and the women from the village standing on the side waiting for them to finish.

Julienne, who was seated beside Luciano, took one last bite of the duck’s wing before standing and walking beside Princess Amaya.

...

In the next three days, the volunteers were busy paving and laying down cobblestones on the dirt road, starting from the village entrance in the southern part and moving to the northern part, where the poorest villagers lived in small thatched houses with single rooms.

The carpenters they hired worked on the concrete houses, which were 20 square meters in size. Each house was a box with four walls, two windows opposite each other, and a door.

The roof was high, as the villagers intended to add a loft. The flooring would be made from bamboo. The loft would serve as the sleeping area for the children.

Princess Amaya did not help the volunteers on the road work. She, Luciano and her guards decided to build a tree house. In the eastern part of the village, there was an old tree. The trunk was so big it would take three adults holding hands to surround it. The leaves were thick and filtered out most of the sun’s rays.

The tree house was big enough to accommodate twenty children. She used overlapping bamboo for the roof and the walls, similar to what her Daddy Ibrahim had built for her.

She instructed a carpenter to build a bookshelf from bamboo and placed the children’s books she had purchased the previous day on it. The children could spend the day playing inside the tree house or reading the illustrated children’s books.

Fiona also spent the last three days live-streaming. On the first day, she joined the volunteers in laying the cobblestones, but the volunteers were annoyed that she was delaying their work. In the end, Fiona decided to visit scenic spots instead.

In the last three days, Vaquez and his men apprehended a few suspicious men who loitered around the village.

On their last day at the village, the volunteers decided to have fun and visit the waterfalls and the hidden cave the villagers had been recommending. They needed to ride in small boats that could only accommodate up to five passengers, excluding the two boatmen.

Vasquez looked at Luciano with worry. They did not have time to check the path, the waterfall, and the cave.

"Don’t worry, I can take care of myself. Besides, you and Luciano can ride with me and Julienne on the boat.

Luciano sighed deeply. As guards, they can only follow what the Princess is commanding them.

The monkey sitting on the branch above the tree house where the group was discussing, continued to sit leisurely its tail swinging from left to right.
