Chapter 271: Investigating

"Can you just spill it and not keep me hanging?" Hendrix said irritably.

General Jones chuckled. The old man was just like his men back then who were impatient.

"There was a research lab hidden under Mount Ibra. When the people in the facility noticed that they were fighting a battle that was already lost, they escaped after activating the self-distract mode of the research facility."

"What?"

General Jones cast a glance in the old man’s direction.

"The princess and your grandson noticed that the animals were behaving strangely. More surprising is that, when the animals died and pressure was applied on them, they would explode killing anything within a half meter vicinity."

"The Lireyan military investigated the mountains but they were a step late. The research facility was destroyed and fire ravaged Mount Ibra. Fortunately, because of your grandson and the princess stepping in, a submarine was intercepted." General Jones recounted calmly.

"Why did the Lireyan government not report this to the Alliance?" Hendrix blurted out.

"For that one, you have to ask their Supremo. I guess they wanted to investigate more and get conclusive pieces of evidence before reporting it."

Hendrix pondered for a long time.

"Aren’t the chips enough evidence?"

"Oh, I forgot to mention that the submarine self-destructed killing the people and the animals on it. The person behind it was very heartless. He did not provide a way out for the people working for him."

Hendrix glared at General Jones. Why did he not clarify earlier?

"They should still have reported the incident to the Alliance." The old man uttered as he tapped the armrest of the couch.

"Maybe they are thinking that an allied country is behind it?" General Jones speculated.

"Lireya is a small peaceful country. Their defense system is not enough to withstand an attack from a more powerful country. I am surprised they did not notice that an unauthorized research lab was operating under their noses."

After sharing his thoughts, General Jones frowned when a realization struck him. He watched the old man from his peripheral vision and hoped that he would not retort him.

"Don’t blame them. You, with all the advanced technologies and resources you have, did not uncover them, how could they?" Hendrix retorted.

General Jones wanted to facepalm for shooting himself in the foot.

"Anyway, let us wait for them to report this then. About my grandson .." Hendrix cast General Jones a look that said, ’I should tell Marx to be wary of you.’

"About your grandson, it is just a coincidence. When he auctioned off some rare metals, I was in the auction house on a mission. I just learned about him being there by accident. I got curious so I investigated." General Jones continued chatting, ignoring the glares from Hendrix Skylar.

"Let’s not talk about my grandson. This time, do you have someone you can send to investigate the activities of the Dark Phonix?"

General Jones looked at Hendrix with a complicated gaze,

"I have three people in mind. They are actually helping us unconsciously."

"That is great! Are they existing soldiers that you have trained diligently?" Hendrix asked like a child would.

"Secretary-General, the best person who can help us would be your grandson and the Princess of Lireya." General Jones spoke carefully, afraid that he would trigger the old man.

"What is the use of the funding that we are providing you if you don’t have qualified personnel who can do the job? I don’t doubt my grandson’s capability, but the Princess of Lireya is a woman after all. And she just came back to her family. Don’t be shameless!" Hendrix raised his voice to the general.

General Jones stood up. He walked toward the wall where a portrait of Princess Amaya was displayed. She was probably twelve years old. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

He was looking at a pair of clear but determined eyes. The gaze was very familiar. It was the look that Ibrahim gave him when told him that he wanted to lead the team that would investigate Operation Unicorn.

"Why are you scolding me, Sec-Gen? I am not doing anything to these two people. I wouldn’t approach them nor i would ask someone to come to them on my behalf to convince them to work for the Alliance." General Jones chuckled lightly.

"What do you mean?" The Skylar patriarch asked in confusion.

"I will just spy on them, Sec-Gen. I hope that you wouldn’t mind."

"I would not mind, but do you think my grandson would not mind?" Hendrix thought of his grandson who hated being controlled or followed.

"Oh, that! Your grandson accepted a mission that we posted on the website. The location of the mission is in Aeseana. I know you are already aware of this, Sec-Gen." General Jones looked at the old man in the eyes without batting an eyelid.

Hendrix’s face turned ugly. "You...What is the mission that Marx accepted?"

"Don’t worry, Sec-Gen, Marx’s mission is only to explore the mountains of all the countries in Aeseana."

Hendrix heaved a sigh of relief. Marx did tell him that he had gotten a mission but he did not tell what it was all about.

When Skylar Technologies collaborated with the Alliance by providing them with both the software and devices for reconnaissance and weaponry, Hendrix agreed to set up a highly secured website where the Alliance and the Security Council could post missions and members could accept the mission.

His two grandsons, Marx and Karl were both members of the site. But it was the first time that Marx has accepted a mission.

"Did he do it for the girl?" Hendrix asked himself.

General Jones, looked at the metals and gemstones that Ibrahim has cataloged.

"I now understand where the princess got all the gemstones she used for the pieces of jewelry that she auctioned." He studied Hendrix Skylar and decided to be mischievous and tease him.

"Did you know that your future daughter-in-law is very good at jewelry design?"

Hendrix ears buzzed. Did the general just tease him?
