Chapter 238: A Massacre

"Don’t be scared. It is me." Marx called from the door of the room.

"You scared me, Marx. You did not make any sound at all." Amaya complained. She heaved a sigh of relief. She was expecting that it was a werewolf ready to pounce on her.

When she thought about it, If the werewolf was trapped inside the building then it should already be dead as all the dead humans have turned into skeletons.

"I found stairs that lead downstairs. Come, let us take a look." Marx held her by the wrist as he walked into the hallway and turned right. He opened a door and there was a stair going down.

"This seemed to be a modern facility. There should be a lighting system here." Amaya said softly. She studied the wall beside the staircase and saw a switch. She flicked it but nothing happened.

"The power source is not working. It must have run out of fuel or destroyed." Marx took a torch from his backpack. Amaya remembered that she also had one so she took it out.

"Wait for me," Vasquez shouted from the end of the hallway.

Marx and Amaya were already descending the stairs when Vasquez caught up. They found a lot of broken glass everywhere.

"Be careful, Amaya. There are a lot of sharp objects on the floor." Marx reminded Amaya.

"This looked like an underground laboratory," Vasquez commented.

From the stairs, there was a huge space without partitions. Skeletons, broken test tubes, petri dishes, and other glasses littered the floor along with table parts. There were a lot of red dyes on the floor and broken furniture.

"A massacre happened in this place." Vasquez voiced out what Marx and Amaya were thinking.

After studying the surroundings, the trio noted that cubicles lined up the three walls of the underground laboratory. Some of the cubicles were big while the others were small.

Amaya explored the cubicles on the left side. Marx went to check the cubicles at the far end in the middle while Vasquez went to the right.

When Amaya entered the first cubicle, she noticed that the bedsheet was dyed red. There were also splashes of red on the wall. Her torch caught something on the wall. It was a photo with some annotations on it. Amaya took out her cell phone and snapped a photo. Then she carefully peeled the photo from the wall.

The room was not that big. With the bed and a side table, it looked cramped. There was also some equipment on the side of the bed that Amaya recognized. Only a few of the equipment were broken. Perhaps it was because the room looked cramped that’s why some of the furniture including the bed and the side table were still intact.

Amaya opened the drawer and found a journal in it. She took it out and left the cubicle. She checked the rest of the ten cubicles and she found the same things. After some time the three of them met at the stairs and all were carrying different things. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"It is getting late. Let us go back up."

"I found a kitchen upstairs but the supplies were all spoiled and have long expired. There is nothing that could be eaten. Looks like this place was abandoned for at least three years " Vasquez lamented.

"Let us get out of here. The air is getting thin and there might be harmful bacteria and viruses." Marx was worried because of the condition they had uncovered inside.

Amaya and Vasquez agreed and all three climbed up the stairs and exited the building. Marx took out a bottle from his backpack and sprayed it on Amaya, himself, and Vasquez.

"This is a biochemical spray that will kill a huge spectrum of viruses and bacteria." Marx carefully sprayed the things that they had taken out of the building.

"It is only 5:00 pm but it is already dark. Do you think it is safe to go out?" Vasquez looked upward with a frown.

"Let us stay inside. It is safer here." Marx said decisively.

"Do you think the beast that massacred the people in this safe house knows how to open the door?" Amaya was looking at Marx.

"Don’t worry, Aya. I changed the configuration of the lock. There is actually a chip buried inside the thick rock wall. The chip controls the mechanism that opens and closes the door. The one who invented the chip was really brilliant. I can’t figure out what he used to power that mechanism. It could be an ultra microreactor that could last for several years."

Amaya looked at Marx with dazzling eyes. "You are amazing, Marx. How did you figure it out?"

Marx’s lips quivered. He held his cell phone in his hand for Amaya to see. "This little device has AI technology. It told me those things. It sensed the presence of the chip after we went inside."

Vasquez did not make any comment. He already had an idea of what Marx was capable of. He has the Skylar Companies at his disposal. Technology, research, and development were one of their specialties.

The guard looked around and studied their surroundings with what remaining light was available. He guessed that there should be a water source inside the enclosure. Considering the danger outside, the people who used to occupy this safehouse would not be foolish enough not to provide a water source.

"Marx, look! There is a faucet jutting out of the rock wall over there!" Amaya shouted excitedly as she pointed to a spot where the overgrown grass was.

Vasquez: "..."

Vasquez walked hurriedly to the faucet before the princess could beat him into it. When he opened the faucet, murky and pungent water flowed out.

"Why does it smell like rust?" Amaya asked. She approached Vasquez and watched as the water flowed out of the faucet.

"It hasn’t been used for a long time," Vasquez explained casually.

After waiting for a few minutes, the water turned clear.

"Let’s eat early and rest early. I hope that we can have a peaceful sleep." Marx said after finishing putting up the tent for Amaya.

Total darkness enveloped the forest. The sun must have completely set. As if on cue, the nocturnal animals in the forest started their symphony.

A terrifying howl that made one’s hair stand on end sounded nearby and then there was a loud thud on the wall at the other side as if someone or something wanted to bore a hole in the wall.
