Chapter 237: A Minotaur?

"Yes, it looks like it. That minotaur spoke about his father who looks like me."

Marx and Vasquez looked at Amaya incredulously.

"What I mean is, he looked like me in form... a human," Amaya explained.

"It is getting late, we should get going." Marx was concerned as the forest was getting darker even if it was only mid-afternoon so he cut Amaya. She can continue telling them what happened earlier while they were traveling.

He caressed the nape of his horse. "Go, buddy. Bring us to a safe place."

Apollo’s ears perked up. After Marx completed his words, the horse ran fast. They passed through the river on the same route they used earlier.

After two hours of traveling, they reached another clearing beside a small steam. The trio was surprised to find a four-meter-high enclosure made from solid rock. They circled the enclosure but could not find any door or opening.

"There should be a mechanism to open this." Marx was speaking to himself. He took his cell phone and turned on the x-ray scanner.

"Marx, I didn’t know that such a small device could do so many things and so powerful."

"This is on beta testing. I can give you one if you like." Marx continued to carefully scan one area.

"Really, can you give me one?" Amaya looked at Marx with her big bright eyes.

"Of course, I will," Marx replied without thinking. He heard a beep and became excited. He passed the cell phone on the wall facing them once again. The beeping sound was heard again.

"There should be a mechanism here that should open the door." Marx repeated what he said earlier. He was seriously studying the wall to the point that he was just a kissing distance from it.

Amaya remembered how the minotaur opened the door to the cave. Amaya took hold of Marx’s hand and guided it to the depression at the wall. It was unnoticeable unless you look at it intentionally.

Marx looked at Amaya with mixed emotions. This woman has not changed at all. She still did not have any qualms about getting too close to him. He hoped that she was only like this with him. Of course, Marx knew that she only let down her guard if it was related to him.

"If you press down hard, a knob would appear." Amaya did not explain further.

Marx pressed down hard. A knob indeed appeared.

"Turn it clockwise pausing at every quarter."

Marx hesitated but eventually followed her instruction.

"Then turn it counterclockwise. The pointer should point at 12:0 clock."

Marx was very obedient without arguing. He followed Amaya’s instruction and at the final turn, there was a loud click sound. The lock behind the door was unlocked. He looked at Amaya in disbelief.

"How did you figure it out?" Marx wondered.

"I saw how the minotaur did it. I figured out that he must have learned that technique from his ’father.’" Amaya answered matter-of-factly.

Marx asked him to move the blockage and Vasquez of course obeyed.

They lifted the huge brick stone and moved it aside. Amaya went inside to take a look. There was a structure that looked like a rectangle. it only has a door and no windows. She looked up and there were iron bars arranged very near each other making it impossible even for small animals to enter from above.

This was a mini stronghold.

Amaya went outside and carefully led Artemis inside. Marx and Vasquez followed suit. They placed back the door on its place.

Amaya was about to raise a question but Vasquez beat into it.

"Marx, this is quite a safe house. But how come it was abandoned?"

"How should I know?"

The ground was laid with rocks except for a small portion where grass has overgrown. Was it intended to be an herb garden?

Amaya approached the corner where there was grass. She noticed that a few herbs survived. She also saw different parts of human skeleton jutting out of the ground. Some were hidden by the grass.

"Marx, over here. I found some skeletons."

Marx and Vasquez hurried over and they both confirmed that those were human skeletons.

"They must be the people doing research in this facility. But what happened to them? Why were they killed and why did no one come to rescue them?" Marx asked no one in particular.

Marx went to the building and tried to open the door.

"Be careful, Marx. What if there are some beast trapped inside?"

"Here." Marx handed Amaya one of his guns.

Both Amaya and Vasquez stood guard behind Marx.

Marx breathed deeply and kicked the door with all his might. The door did not budge.

"Maybe, the door should be opened the same way we opened the enclosure." Amaya suggested.

Marx approached the door. He tried to look for a deviation in the color of the bricks beside the door. Amaya was right. The door was opened the same way as the door outside.

After he unlocked the door, he inserted his hand into a small gap that appeared when the lock was unlocked. He pushed the door to the side. It was a sliding door so it was much more convenient for Marx.

The moment the door opened, a pungent smell emanated from the inside. Amaya was about to retch when Marx put a mask on her face.

"Wear your goggles. It will protect your eyes from poisonous gasses and it can also help you see in the dark."

Marx intentionally stood on the side and waited for some time. After some time passed, the trio entered the building.

Amaya stepped on something. When she looked down, it was a skull.

"There are a lot of human bones here. Judging by their placement, it looked like ferocious beasts killed and scattered their mangled bodies."

"Ferocious beasts like a werewolf." Amaya

Marx went inside one of the rooms. The bed was in a mess. The white bedsheet has turned gray due to the dust.

Amaya was thinking about what the Minotaur said about a werewolf. Where was the werewolf? Did it escape after killing everyone?

Amaya entered the second room from the left. She felt as if she was being watched. Her grip on the dagger hidden under her vest tightened.
