Raised From The Wild-Chapter 136: The SportsFest
"Princess, we actually lacked a player in the 4x400 meters relay so we signed you up as represented of the seniors." The girl in ponytail said.
Amaya vaguely recognized the three girls who met her at the entrance. They were not actually her classmates but they were from the lower class. She followed them to the rest room and changed. She stuffed her uniform into her backpack.
Clarissa has fixed her hair into a side braid making her features more visible. She was wearing a black sports shorts and white body fitting tank top with her last name printed on the front and the number 1 at the back.
When she went out of the restroom, the three young ladies who accompanied her gawked at her. She has a beautiful body. Her long and well toned legs were slender and straight.
"Princess, I bet that the most popular sports today will be the track and field events." Layla said while gazing at her adoringly.
"What time is the event?" Amaya asked.
"It should be in 30 minutes."
The four of them headed to the grounds. Amaya looked around but did not see any of her classmates. Julienne was not also there.
The girl in ponytail whose name was Carmina noticed that Amaya seemed to be looking for some people. "Track and field is not really that popular so not many students would like to watch it."
Amaya nodded in understanding.
The first event was the 100 meter sprint. When Amaya went to the starting area, students who where there started murmuring.
"Why would a princess like her join such a lowly event? Shouldn’t she be participating in fencing or archery or maybe lawn tennis?"
"She grow up in the jungle. What do you expect?"
The two women were talking softly, afraid that someone else would hear them. Amaya was a princess after all. They cannot ridicule her publicly.
A few men who were participating on the men’s running events could not help but ogle Amaya. They took photos of her while she was standing gracefully in her sportswear. They posted her photos in the school’s forum and captured them as ’The scenery here is more beautiful.’
When the male students saw the photos, many of them left the games they were watching and headed to the school grounds. Soon a huge crowd gathered to watch track and field.
"On your marks.." the official said in a loud voice.
Amaya did not know what to do so she copied the one beside her. When the official shouted ’GO’ she was caught off guard, so she started late. Her opponents were already one third of the way before she started sprinting.
The crowd laughed when they saw Amaya’s confusion. But they suppressed it when they realized whom they were laughing at.
Amaya ran as if she was chasing Strata. She ran like the wind. However, no matter how fast she was, since the distance was just 100 meters she was not able to catch up. She finished tenth.
Amaya accepted the fact that she was distracted at the start. People from the crowed gave her a comforting look. She smiled at them.
After resting for a few minutes, Amaya went back to the starting area and prepared for the next game which was the 200 meter dash. She waited for the already familiar command and the moment she heard the sound, she started running. She did not give others the opportunity to beat her. She arrived at the finish line and only after a few more seconds did the other athletes reached the finish line.
A thunderous clap field the air. Amaya was stunned. She wondered why the winner of the previous event did not receive such accolade. Amaya smiled at the crowed as she went back to the starting line to wait for her other events.
"Princess, after the individual events, will be the relay. Don’t you feel tired? You want some water?" Layla asked her.
Amaya shook her head. She was not tired at all. The next two events were also a breeze for her. When she learned that today was just a preliminary rounds, she did not use her full strength. She consistently placed third.
The 4 x 400 meter relay however was a different story. It was already a championship round.
Amaya was stationed at the last leg of the relay. She would receive a stick from her teammate and bring it to the finish line. The first two players were slower compared to the rest and they lagged behind. Fortunately, Layla was faster than the first two and soon the distance from the other participants were shortened.
When it was Amaya’s turn, she used her full strength to run and she felt that her body knew no tiredness. The gap between her and the others soon narrowed and before Team A, reached the finish line, she overtook her. At the last minute, she won the last leg.
Layla, Carmina and Rosalinda could not help themselves but hug her.
"Princess, you are so fast!"
"Princes.. Princess ... Princes !" The crowd kept on chanting. Amaya was flustered.
Amidst the happy chanting , there was a pair of dark brown eyes that regarded Amaya with hate.
"What is so good about running? It is just purely physical. "
A man wearing a visor and has studs on his earlobes heard her and retorted, "What is your problem? And what is so bad about running? Are you jealous?"
Samantha was scared. She pulled her two lackeys out of the crowd and hurriedly left.
Soon, Julienne and Raymundo came to where the track and field event was held.
"Princess, I have been looking for you for a long time. I called you but you did not answer your phone." Julienne pouted.
"My phone is inside my locker. I went directly here as my events started early."
Layla handed Amaya a bottled water and a clean hand towel. Amaya accepted them. She uncapped the bottle and drank half of the contents.
"You joined the relay?" Julienne asked her in surprise. "And you won! Congratulations!"
"Layla said that the Seniors lacked one player so they pulled me in. By the way, these are Layla, Carmina and Rosalinda."
"Yeah, they are from the Yala class. Good job ladies. Congratulations for winning the 4 x 400 meter relay." Raymundo shook the hands of the four ladies.
He approached the student who was in charge of recording the results and he was surprised to see that Princess Amaya won the 200 meter, 400 meter sprints and the 800 meter mid distance run. The student told him that she only lost the 100 meter sprint because she did not start when the go signal was given.
"Julie, our princess is amazing. She is first place in three of the events." Raymundo said proudly.
"Of course! She ran as fast as the wind." Julienne grinned. "Princess, the qualifying rounds for archery is at 11:00 am. We need to hurry to the other side if you want to make it." She added.
The group left the track and field ground and transferred to the other side where the archery competition was held. Julienne handed Amaya an extra set of her archery wear. She forgot to remind Amaya to bring her own.
The crowd that has gathered earlier to watch Amaya started to disperse. They were no longer interested to watch the remaining races for track and field. They hurried to where the archery competition would be held.
"Sister," an excited voice greeted Amaya. It was Prince Donello. He was also participating in the archery together with Danella.
Amaya patted Donello on the head as a greeting. She wanted to approach Danella to greet her but she glared at her.
"Danella and I were practicing the last few days in the palace training ground. I looked for you but you went to the island."
"I forgot all about the SportsFest." Amaya looked around and saw that the athletes participating in the qualifying round have brought their own bows and arrows. So did Donello and Danella. Raymundo and Julienne were also participating and so Samantha.
The participants where allowed to shoot a few arrows for practice. Amaya casually took a bow and arrows prepared by the school for those who did not bring their own.
The bow was a recurve one and it was a bit different from what Amaya normally used. She pulled the string towards her face with her fingers and aimed at her target. She released the arrow and it flew beyond the target and hit the tree at the back.
Donello, Julienne and Raymundo looked at Amaya with concern.
Danella sneered. "Sister, don’t embarrass yourself and don’t embarrass us."
Samantha suppressed her laughter. It was her opportunity to shame Amaya. She was the gold medalist in last year’s SportsFest in the women’s category.
Amaya remained calm. She took another arrow and aimed at the outer ring of the target. She released her arrow and it hit the second outer ring. It was still a bit off.
She heard cackles from the audience. Donello who was standing nearby glared at the audience and the harsh laugh stopped.
"Sis, you want me to teach you?" Donello asked tentatively.
"It is okay, Don. I got this." She got another arrow and released it. She hit the outer ring perfectly. Amaya gave a satisfactory smile.
Everyone was speechless.
