Upon waking up, Avery felt more refreshed than usual. And not simply because of his new high-quality bedding.

Nestled up next to him, Jasmine was softly snoring. She was in a truly deep sleep still and looked quite peaceful.

It brought a smile to Avery’s face and seeing her like this made him glad that he allowed her onboard his ship. She had helped him several times since he lucked into finding the Dauntless, and he was certain that she would continue to do so.

’My mom’s probably going to kill me though.’ Avery thought, dreading meeting with his parents later in the day.

Just recently he had introduced Kasandra to them as his girlfriend, and now he was bringing another girl along that he had relations with.

There were no strict laws in the Alliance against having more than one romantic partner and plenty of men and women did. Especially certain races that had a long-standing culture of doing so.

Nevertheless, Avery knew that his parents and his grandparents on both sides had monogamistic marriages. It was not some sort of rule, but simply how his family viewed things.

’Maybe I should have thought about it more. But no. There’s simply no way I could have refused Jasmine. Not when she came at me so desperately. And Kasandra even told me to man up and take responsibility."

Avery never expected to end up with two beautiful women as his crewmembers and lovers, but if they both accepted the situation, he hardly had any objections. He was a young man after all, and there was no way he would refuse them if it was what they wanted.

Carefully he reached over to his terminal and began aimlessly looking through articles on the station’s network.

To his surprise, he found some news stories about himself. It seemed he had become quite the hot topic after being awarded the Alliance Silver Cross of Heroism. He was basically a local hero now.

After nearly another hour and a half, Jasmine finally began to rouse.

The moment her eyes fluttered open and she fully regained consciousness, she found Avery looking down at her.

Immediately her face went red as the events of the prior evening resurfaced in her mind.

As if to hide her embarrassment, she pulled a blanket over her face. She felt she had lost her composure and had made sounds and expressions last night that were disgraceful. Avery had started off gently and used his experience with Kasandra to make sure it had been an enjoyable experience for Jasmine.

"It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s perfectly normal to lose one’s self during the act. I honestly got a bit too wild towards the end myself." Avery said to comfort his embarrassed lover.

Truthfully, he found Jasmine’s bashfulness now cute. Especially in contrast to how she had been last night. Once he had gotten started, she often matched his pace and was hardly willing to let go for a moment. The embrace of someone she trusted had been immensely comforting after what she just went through.

Once he coaxed her out from under the blanket, Avery bent over and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. If he was going to be taking her as a lover, then he was going to go all out and show her the same affection he gave Kasandra.

"From now on your mine. So don’t worry. I will do anything to protect you. Even if the entire Alliance turned against you, I would fight to keep you safe." Avery said reassuringly.

Hearing his heartfelt words, any lingering trepidation she had about possibly being kicked off the ship were dashed away. Her life may have taken some harrowing and unexpected twists and turns, but she could not deny that she was a bit happy with where she ended up.

The two them then took turns showering, and Jasmine headed back over to her room to put on some actual clothing.

When Avery headed to the dining room to get some breakfast, he found Kasandra already there. Eating some more of the buns she made the day before.

"So did you enjoy yourself last night?" Kasandra asked, wearing an impish grin.

"Yeah, I did. But it was certainly unexpected. Someone else had been leading me to believe that they were going to be stopping by."

Avery sat down and placed a food capsule into the autochef.

While he waited for the machine to prepare him his precisely calculated breakfast, he began asking Kasandra the list of questions that had been stirring around inside his head.

"No, it doesn’t bother me that you’ve got more than one woman. My father actually had four wives, and a man having at least two partners is fairly common among my species. And I went ahead and encouraged Jasmine and set things up because I knew it would be for the best. You have a bad habit of saving young women in distress and stealing their hearts. It was obvious she was already starting to fall for you, and the longer she stayed on this ship, the more likely her feelings would grow. It was best to get this out of the way early to avoid any awkwardness and tension in the future."

Kasandra’s explanation made logical sense, and Avery did not get the feeling that she was trying to hide how she really felt. She had practically sent Jasmine barreling towards him. Still, this made him wonder why she acted so territorially when she first met the former sergeant.

"Oh, that. It was more that I was afraid of a honeytrap. Sometimes the Alliance Police throw pretty young officers at promising mercenaries to try and recruit them. They actually tried that trick with Kaiden once. But now that she’s part of your crew, it’s pretty much accepted that she’s your mistress. The same as with me." Kasandra said, explaining a bit of mercenary culture he was unaware of.

Even if he had never actually done anything with Jasmine, everyone still would have seen her as one of his partners.

After he had finished discussing things with Kasandra, Jasmine made her way into the dining room. Trying her best to keep a composed expression, though there was a faint redness to her cheeks still.

The three of them ate breakfast, and while at first they were silent and there was a bit of awkwardness in the air, they all started opening up quickly and were talking normally by the end of the meal.

Once they were finished, it was time to head off to visit Avery’s patents. He would be introducing Jasmine to them and saying goodbye for now.

"Avery. Follow me to your old room. We have something we need to discuss." Serena said, a menacing smile on her face.

With the expression of someone who was about to be executed, Avery did as his mother told.

From out in the main living area, Kasandra, Jasmine, and Avery’s father could hear the shouting coming from the other end of the apartment. Avery’s mother was using some choice words to describe her son right now. Such as philanderer and scum.

It was apparent that she was far from thrilled about Avery’s sudden increase in lovers. Particularly since he had only introduced Kasandra to her a short while ago.

"I’d better go intervene." Avery’s father sighed, standing up and bracing himself with a cane. The look he was wearing was as serious as if he was about to march off to war.

Thanks to his father’s assistance, Avery was able to calm his mother down enough to explain things. He told her about Jasmine’s circumstances, and how Kasandra had given her approval.

Serana still did not seem pleased with the situation, but she was at least a bit more accepting of it. She would have a hard time telling him to abandon people he knew when they were in need.

"I’d like to apologize for my earlier display." Avery’s mother said, slightly bowing her head to Kasandra and Jasmine when she returned to the main room.

Avery and his father looked worn out. Serana’s wrath was a difficult thing to rein in.

Fortunately, she did not hold anything against either Kasandra or Jasmine and was friendly towards both of them.

She wanted to know a bit more about Avery’s latest companion and began asking all kinds of questions about Jasmine. Though she eventually asked something that caught everyone off guard.

"So, when can I expect some grandchildren?"

Avery started choking on the water he had been drinking when he heard this, and both Kasandra and Jasmine looked incredibly flustered by it.

Kasandra had only been with Avery for around a month now, and Jasmine had only started a relationship with him the night before. Obviously, it was far too soon to be thinking about having kids.

Of course, it was fairly obvious that Serena had said this as a bit of payback towards her son for suddenly springing a second girlfriend on them right before he was about to leave. She had even waited for when he was taking a sip of water.

"M- mom! This is Cleary not the time or place for that!"

"Oh, but I’m not going to be around forever. And my son has brought home two beautiful girls. So of course I would be wondering about something like that." Serana said innocently.

"Dear. This is the last time we will be seeing Avery for a while. I think it would be best if we kept things cordial."

Thanks to Avery’s father, his mother stopped trying to tease him. However, it was hard for things to get back to normal after what had been brought up.

Several hours quickly went by, and the five of them had lunch together. Already Avery found the autochef that his parents had lacking after getting a taste of the immaculate meals his new silver series autochef could produce.

Eventually their time together was coming to an end. Avery, Kasandra, and Jasmine needed to head back and prepare to launch. It would be a hard hit to their reputation as mercenaries if they were late for their escort mission.

"Make sure you send transmission’s back home frequently. If we don’t hear from you for a while, I might just fly out into space myself to come find you." Avery’s mother warned.

"I got it. I’ll make sure to contact you whenever I can and get you updated on where we are."

Just as Avery was about to leave, he opened his terminal and sent something to both of his parents.

"This is a parting gift from me. As part of receiving the Silver Cross, I receive a yearly stipend from the Alliance. Since I’m leaving, I wanted to make sure that you both don’t need to worry about money from now on." Avery said.

Instead of having the funds sent to his account, he was having it redirected to his parents. Now they would receive two hundred fifty thousand Krenin a year without having to do anything. This would serve to let them live more relaxed lives and give them a safety net in case something unexpected happened again.

Brought to tears by the gratitude they felt towards their son, both his mother and father pulled him into their embrace and thanked him for all he had done for them.

"Just doing what I can for the people that raised me with love and care." Avery said, trying and failing to fight back his own tears.

When the three of them had finally finished their heartwarming farewell, Avery headed back towards the hangar where the Dauntless was docked, with Kasandra and Jasmine right alongside him.

As he was walking away, he resisted the urge to look back. He had already said everything he needed to. His path now was ahead of him. To see through his dream to travel across the stars and build himself up as a top mercenary.
