Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 91 Another Big Step
"I can hardly believe it’s the same space." Avery said in awe.
It was the day after they gathered Jasmine things from her apartment, and an interior designer with a half dozen construction bots had come through and fully refurbished the two crew rooms to Kasandra and Jasmine’s specifications.
The process had cost a sizable amount since it was a rush job and the furniture being provided was of high quality, but it was more than worth the price in Avery’s eyes.
Both previously cramped rooms, each meant to house six people, now had only a single bed in them and items suited to their occupants’ tastes.
Avery first inspected Kasandra’s room, and she had her chest puffed out proudly as she showed him around.
The first word that came to Avery’s mind was elegant.
Made of a synthetic wood, her bed frame was expertly crafted and had cylindrical posts that resembled pillars going towards the ceiling.
Thin dark blue fabric hung down for the posts as a canopy around the bed.
Her bedspread was from silk procured from a gigantic Othuhiri Silkworm. A material known for its immense softness and comfort. There were some urban legends that the material felt so good that people had died in their beds because they refused to leave them.
Along one wall was a large wardrobe in the same style as the bed that had Kasandra’s bodily data stored within its computer and could assist her in picking out what outfits she wanted based on her current mood.
On either side of the bed were two nightstands. One which had a small drawer connected to the ship’s waste disposal system that Kasandra could use to dispose of any trash.
Finally, she had set up a multiuse desk and makeup stand in one corner of the room.
This was the only item that did not match the rest of her furniture, as it had an outer metal plating and could easily configure itself into over a dozen designs depending on what she needed at the time.
’She’s also got some celestial and terrestrial pictures on the walls. I believe that one is a forest from some planet.’ Avery thought, glancing around at the pictures Kasandra had put up.
His overall impression was that this was the room of someone that had not been living out in space their entire life.
The use of synthetic wood in the furniture and all of the pictures led Avery to believe that Kasandra might have lived on a lush planet at one time.
’I’ve already put together that she was a rich girl at one point, but judging by her tastes here, her family must have been quite well off.’
Avery was unsure of why she left her home. It could have simply been a desire for adventure, or perhaps her family fell on hard times and could no longer afford to live where they had been before. Kasandra had not yet divulged the details of her past to him, and Avery had no intention of asking. She would tell him when she was ready.
Once Avery finished the tour of Kasandra’s room, the three of them headed towards Jasmine’s newly refurbished room.
She was not quite as confident in her choices as Kasandra had been, though. And hesitantly stood in front of the door for a few moments before opening it up.
Inside Avery saw that the décor she had chosen was more brightly colored and cute.
Honestly it was a bit surprising since when Avery first met her, she came off a serious police sergeant that showed no vulnerabilities. Of course, after getting to know her a bit better over the last couple of days, he felt that her room suited her.
"I see you like Othuhiri Silk as well." Avery commented, brushing his hand over the top blanket after receiving Jasmine’s permission.
Unlike Kasandra, who needed an entirely knew bedspread, Jasmine had packed up her own from her apartment and brought it here. Which honesty saved Avery a small fortune. Though he wondered if a sergeant’s salary was really enough to afford such luxurious goods.
"Yes. I’ve been using it since I was child, and it was like hell when I was sleeping on synthetic fiber sheets during my basic training."
Jasmine had a far-off look in her eyes as she remembered her earlier days. Just having joined the Alliance Police Academy.
Avery on the other hand, picked up something about Jasmine’s past. If she had been using such high-quality fabric for so long, she likely also came from a wealthy family.
’Their fathers aren’t going to come after me with private militaries demanding their daughters back at some point, are they?’ Avery thought, imagining what he considered the worst-case scenario to be.
"Oh, do you like Nianni Taador as well?" Kasandra asked, noticing a poster that Jasmine had put up.
"Yeah, who doesn’t. Her music is truly spectacular. I don’t think that I’ve come across anyone that’s had anything bad to say about her songs, even if they aren’t a fan of her."
When the two girls looked towards him for his opinion, Avery nodded his head in agreement. He had a bit of Nianni’s music downloaded onto the ship’s computer already. She was currently the most popular singer in the Dramid Alliance, and for good reason. Her voice mysteriously seemed to resonate with most people.
For a few minutes, the three of them stood around discussing their favorite music genres and artists, before Avery led Jasmine and Kasandra to a surprise he had waiting for them.
"Our remolded dining room. With far more comfortable seats, a table that can expand and shrink depending on what we want, and the crowning jewel of any modern kitchen."
Where the Dauntless’ old autochef had been before, now stood a brand new one from Koken industries silver series.
It was the latest model and one of the best autochef’s currently in circulation within the Alliance. It had cost Avery sixty-two thousand Krenin to purchase, but he felt that it was a necessary expense since they were about to embark on a long journey.
A crew eating delicious food would certainly be in better shape than one that was not. Morale was important after all.
Seeing how this was the newer model of the type she had when she was younger, Kasandra gleefully grabbed a food capsule and shoved it into the machine.
Soon four steaming buns popped out on a shining plate.
"Those certainly smell good. What are they?" Avery asked, taking an interest in the snack Kasandra had just made.
"They’re called Ariac Buns. A traditional dish from my species’ home planet. Obviously, the ingredients aren’t exactly the same as when it is made from scratch, but they still taste amazing when whipped up by such a high-quality autochef."
Kasandra then took one of the buns and took a large bite out of it.
The inside was filled with some sort of greenish paste, and Avery could smell a sweet scent coming from it.
There was a truly blissful look on Kasandra’s face, and she hastily grabbed a second one after she finished her first.
Once she noticed Avery and Kasandra looking hungrily at the remining to buns, she offered them each one. Wanting to get their opinions on her favorite treat from when she was younger.
"It’s really good. Though, I’ve never had anything like it before." Avery said after the first bite.
The outside was made from some sort of grain product and was extremely soft and melted in the mouth.

The filling was incredibly sweet, but only at first. It quickly mellowed out the longer it sat in one’s mouth and left a faint aftertaste that was pleasant.
"Now, what about your room, Avery? I saw the designer and her helper bots go in their for a few minutes." Kasandra said. As perceptive as ever
"I just had the mattress and bedding upgraded."
Avery had sprung for a self-cleaning mattress, as well as sheets and blankets made from Othuhiri Silk. After feeling the material once, he was afraid that Kasandra would never visit his room again if he did not.
"Well, I think you’ll have to break those in later. Expect a someone to pay you a visit latter tonight." Kasandra whispered coquettishly into Avery’s ear.
Feeling his face starting to heat up, Avery turned his head away so that neither girl could see him.
If Jasmine had not been there as well, he might have immediately picked Kasandra up and brought her to bed right that moment.
Still, with the remodel of the Dauntless’ interior completed, they each went to their own separate rooms to relax for the rest of the day. Tomorrow they would be going to see Avery’s parents one last time, and after that, it would be off to the Phregon System to serve as guards for the fleet of cargo vessels.
Late into the evening, as Avery had expected, the door to his room slid open.
When he looked up, he figured he would see Kasandra, but instead it was Jasmine standing in the doorway.
Vastly different from the usual attire she wore, her current clothing, if it could really be called that, was far more revealing.
She was wearing a purple see-through negligee that did nothing to hide the underwear beneath it.
As Avery was about to lose his composure, a notification from his terminal caught his attention.
He glanced over at it and saw that it was from Kasandra.
’Man up and take responsibility.’
As he read this short and blunt message, he realized that Kasandra’s earlier words had been hinting at this.
’They’ve been conspiring against me.’ Avery thought, as Jasmine hesitantly walked into his room.
After every couple of steps, she seemed to instinctively move her arms to try and cover herself, but knowing what she came here to do, she stopped part way each time. Allowing Avery to keep looking at her entire body as she approached.
"J- Jasmine! You know you don’t have to do this."
Avery voice cracked a bit, and he was clearly in a fluster. He had not allowed her to join his crew because he expected something like this in return.
"I- I know." Jasmine said, just as nervous as Avery was. "But if it’s with you, I don’t mind. In fact, I want to do it. I already know that you’re a considerate person. I just want you to reassure me. If we have this kind of relationship, you won’t abandon me."
At this point, Jasmine had gotten onto Avery’s bed. Giving him a sense of déjà vu.
"If you’re worried about Kasandra, she already gave me permission. Or is it just that you like girls that are prettier, like her?"
"No that’s not it. You’re incredibly beautiful. I- I just don-"
Seeing a fearful but steamy gaze that Jasmine was staring at him with, the words Avery wanted to say got caught in his mouth.
The message that Kasandra had sent him that was still displayed on his terminal caught his eye.
"Okay." Avery said, sitting up and pulling Jasmine into his embrace.
After that there were no more words between the two of them. Both of them simply giving into their desires.
