Chapter 78: Chapter 78: The Consequences of Lying

When Yana’s figure disappeared from view, Julian’s voice sounded again like a slow torture: "She’s had a boyfriend for two months."

His voice was calm as water, as always, unperturbed and serene.

How could Scarlett not discern how turbulent the storm was beneath that calmness?

"I was just coping with Jasper, it’s something I said offhand," Scarlett explained, feigning closeness, "You know I was with you during that time... how could I have been involved with another man? We’ve known each other for a long time, don’t you know what kind of person I am?"

Julian lowered his gaze to her, suddenly raised his hand, and pinched her earlobe.

His fingers were icy, and the familiar touch made Scarlett reflexively shiver, then immediately she brushed away his hand to keep some distance.

"Are your ears red from the cold?" Julian said lightly.

Scarlett knew her ears easily turned red when she lied, and they must be fully red now.

But the true reason at this moment wasn’t because of a lie.

Watching her ears grow increasingly red, Julian’s eyes deepened with coldness, and he spoke slowly:

"If you’ve gone to great lengths to cut ties with me, if it’s only because I’m engaged, I won’t mind, but if there’s another reason..."

His finger brushed across her face, "You know the consequences of deceiving me."

Scarlett turned away, Julian’s fingers almost brushed her lips but missed, her actions of avoiding him like a plague made him quite dissatisfied.

But this time, before he could speak, Scarlett distanced herself, "President Ford, as someone who is already engaged, please refrain from crossing boundaries like this. Cheats will be struck by lightning."

"Do you think I care about such abstract words?"

Julian’s demeanor showed no shift; instead, a calm smile emerged, "But if it concerns you, I don’t mind keeping you on edge."

Promising but not delivering is most despicable.

Scarlett’s eyes reddened with anger almost instantly, "Julian, you’re so shameless, none of your promises ever counted!"

"I only promised to no longer trouble you about your grandmother."

Julian looked at her indifferently as he spoke.

Scarlett’s eyes misted, holding back tears with all her might, the urge to cry was partially from anger but more from sadness and unwillingness over being affected.

How could she have succumbed to liking such a dog?

Yet even dogs clearly seemed more lovable and loyal than the man before her, with eyes only for her.

In the snowy cold wind, Scarlett’s eyes and nose were red, her skin snow-white, making her appear even more vulnerable, naturally, Julian’s disposition toward her was as he pleased, and he indeed acted as such.

When Julian lowered his head to kiss her, Scarlett’s mind went blank for a second.

But just for one second.

The icy sensation snapped her back to reality instantly, and as Julian’s hand grasped her waist and continued his advances, Scarlett mustered all her strength to push him away and raised her hand to slap.

As her fingers landed on Julian’s face, he caught her wrist, sapping her strength.

"Letting you splash water once, and you get cocky?"

Julian’s lips held her breath, but his eyes remained calm, he didn’t release her wrist, but instead slid down to grasp her hand.

Scarlett’s hand was cold, her fingertips icy.

She wanted to withdraw her hand, moved her wrist, but Julian didn’t allow it.

Scarlett’s heart was full of grievances, unwillingness, and discomfort, overwhelmed by mixed emotions, she finally couldn’t hold back, as two crystalline tears hung on her eyelashes, with a choked voice, "Julian, can’t you just once consider my feelings?"

Scarlett saying this was entirely an emotional release.

Julian had a heart of stone, never acting human, just like that, she didn’t expect genuine empathy from him.

But this time, perhaps Julian’s conscience unexpectedly surfaced, he really loosened his grip on her hand.

"Why are you crying?"

His tone softened, and he took out tissues, wiping her tears.

When one receives comfort during sadness, inner grievances tend to magnify, Julian’s warmth at that moment felt like an outlet, Scarlett’s tears fell soundlessly like broken pearls.

Why was she crying?

Crying for falling for a dog, knowing full well there’s no chance yet inevitably moved, the seed that unknowingly sprouted in her heart coiling into vines, gripping her heart, suffocating and painfully unbearable.

She thought her feelings for Julian would evaporate like with Ryan, over time and disappointment.

She thought, heartache was just that, it would pass.

But it seemed different now.

She never felt such pain.

Scarlett cries quietly, silently, not making a sound, only tears streaming down.

Julian gazed down at her, finally sighed when a tear rolled down her jawline, along the neckline deep into her collar, and gently pulled her into an embrace.

"Don’t hug me."

Scarlett resisted, but Julian pressed her neck lightly, resting against his shoulder, "Want everyone to see you cry?"

Scarlett’s movements froze for three seconds, inhaled deeply, waited for the tears in her eyes to completely dry, then withdrew from Julian’s shoulder, walked away without looking up at him.

She cried in front of him like this, feeling utterly embarrassed.

Scarlett walked toward the inn without looking back, and as she reached the entrance, she met eyes with Jasper, who was smoking beside, and he stared at her thoughtfully, with eyes conveying scrutiny, definitely not good.

Jasper’s gaze quickly withdrew as Scarlett brushed past him, landing in the distance where Julian was approaching slowly.

Rumors said it was Zoe who dumped Julian.

But now, intuition told Jasper, maybe it was Zoe who actually got dumped.

Julian approached the inn door, facing Jasper’s unfriendly face, not intending to pay attention.

But evidently, Jasper didn’t intend for him to pass freely, blocking Julian, with an indeterminate expression.

"Didn’t you say Scarlett is just Veridian’s employee, no other relationship? I just saw you wiping her tears, hugging her tightly, and even kissing her."

Julian looked at him calmly, "So what?"

Jasper: "She already has a boyfriend, are you competing to be her side man?"

The boyfriend matter hadn’t been settled for Julian.

Although Scarlett denied it to him just now, based on his understanding of her, thinking of such a method wasn’t baseless; perhaps she really transitioned seamlessly, or worse, during their time without another man, she’d still been distracted.

Julian’s expression darkened a bit.

Jasper couldn’t fathom Julian’s true thoughts, just saw his face falling suddenly, reinforcing his speculation.

"Was I right? Julian, did you break up with Zoe premediatedly? Did you hurt her?"

Thinking of Zoe being wronged by Julian, Jasper couldn’t help but feel an irrational anger rising.

Compared to Jasper’s intense demeanor, Julian seemed far calmer, just lazily shot him a glance, saying, "If you’re still hung up on Zoe, go ask her yourself, don’t spit madness at me."

Jasper: "...!"

Jasper’s words were entirely ignored by Julian, but the matter of Scarlett having a boyfriend wasn’t past him, the more he dwelled on it, the more unacceptable it seemed. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Julian called Aaron.

"Investigate any men Scarlett has been close with in the past three months."
