Chapter 394: Chapter 375: Surprise Inspection

The man on the other end of the phone had a mid-range voice that clearly indicated he was much older than Sienna Thornton. Sienna quickly changed her tone: "Yes, this is she. May I ask who is calling?"

The person replied: "I am Director-General Linton from the Treaty and Law Department of the Ministry of Commerce. Do you have time to meet?"

In just a few seconds, Sienna remembered three years ago when this Director-General Linton frequently invited her to work for the Treaty and Law Department at the Ministry of Commerce. The last time they met was a year and a half ago when she submitted information to the Ministry on behalf of The Forresters, which was heavily taxed in the United States.

Every time Director-General Linton contacted her, it was to recruit her for the Treaty and Law Department. Could it be the same this time?

Sienna returned to the present, glancing at Joy Jefferson, who was already walking toward her. Without overthinking or asking further, she smiled into the phone: "Happy New Year, Director Linton. When would it be convenient for you to meet?"

Director Linton said: "Anytime during working days. You can come to my office at your convenience."

"Okay, I am in Z City today. I will visit your office to meet with you tomorrow afternoon."

Director Linton responded briskly, saying "Great, I’ll be waiting for you!" before hanging up the phone.

As the call ended, Joy Jefferson had just walked up to the car and waved to Sienna Thornton inside, gesturing toward the open gate behind her, indicating she could drive the car in.

Sienna pressed the accelerator, moving the car a few steps closer to Joy, and lowered the passenger-side window: "Get in."

Joy smiled as she got into the car. Once inside, she checked her wristwatch: "We still have time, no rush, let’s take it easy."

Sienna smiled politely, and after some small talk, they parked the car and headed into the office building together.

Due to the factory’s large area, the square in front of the office building was also astonishingly large. They walked for a few minutes before reaching the office building from the parking lot.

While waiting for the elevator, Joy said: "Our company is the domestic branch of ST Group USA, mainly dealing with electrical and nuclear power components, with some domestic sales, but a large proportion is sold worldwide."

Sienna asked: "Are the exports sold directly to customers by the branch or handled by the US headquarters?"

Joy: "Handled by the headquarters."

Sienna understood immediately.

This factory is merely a manufacturing plant of a Fortune 500 company in the country, taking advantage of China’s cheap labor, low-cost raw materials, and even certain tariff benefits for foreign investors. The factory doesn’t even have sales rights, let alone trade disputes. It seems the position of legal director is at most about sorting out contracts, handling labor disputes, and similar trivial matters.

.

After an interview with the factory’s general manager, who sincerely invited Sienna to become the legal director, the offered salary was actually...

Frankly speaking, the offered monthly salary was barely enough for Sienna to pay her hotel apartment rent and caregiver’s wages. Already inclined to refuse due to Director Linton’s interest and the monotony of factory legal work, Sienna felt even more disconnected from this factory.

Upon leaving the general manager’s office, Sienna went to Joy Jefferson’s office and sat with her for a while. Hearing that the factory offered a post-tax salary of thirty thousand, Joy’s face flushed with embarrassment: "Well, should I mention it to our president again?"

Sienna smiled and patted her hand: "No need. For a legal director who only occasionally handles labor disputes, employee issues, provides legal advice, and assists relevant departments with intellectual property matters, a post-tax salary of thirty thousand is actually quite reasonable."

After finishing, she stood up: "JoJo, let’s chat over dinner tonight. I won’t disturb your work any longer."

"Alright." Joy saw her out.

.

The next day, due to needing to meet Director-General Linton at the Ministry of Commerce in Brimfield at two in the afternoon, Sienna left Z City at nine in the morning and arrived in Brimfield a bit after one. She had a light lunch at a restaurant opposite the Ministry and was at Director Linton’s office promptly at 1:50.

At two, she met with Director-General Linton, who was as enthusiastic as ever. After shaking hands, offering a seat, and making tea, he directly addressed the purpose of yesterday’s call: "Before the new year, the head of the ’Second Legal Division of the WTO Department’ resigned. The main reason for asking you to come today is to see if you are interested in working for the Treaty and Law Department."

The implication was that she might be considered for the head position.

Sienna found this unlikely, as her qualifications were far from enough to take on a head position.

She tentatively asked: "What kind of ’work’ are you referring to? I am aware that your department collaborates with many outstanding private law firms and lawyers, so your intention is?"
