Our Love Story: Hard to Guard Against the Sudden Love Strike-Chapter 395 - 375: Surprise Inspection (Part 2)
She thought, if Director-General Linton’s intention was for her to assist the Treaty and Law Department as a private lawyer in handling trade disputes between the nation and other countries, she had to clarify that she had already left Cognitas and had not yet found a law firm willing to take her in.
But Director-General Linton, who understood her meaning, laughed and said, "I want to recommend you for the position of head of the ’Second Legal Division of the WTO Department,’ it’s just a matter of whether you have the will!" 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Sienna Thornton was taken aback, feeling a surprise that was both expected and unexpected.
As if anticipating her dilemma, Director-General Linton said, "Gone are the days of the old ways; now it’s all about capability! Don’t worry about lacking qualifications or being young. I know you have the strength!"
The "Legal Division of the WTO" is primarily responsible for prosecuting, defending, and appealing trade disputes involving the country in the WTO, participating as a third party in WTO dispute resolutions, and engaging in external consultations on trade disputes involving the country before they are brought to the WTO dispute resolution mechanism.
Sienna Thornton is quite familiar with the WTO regulations. She not only focused on international economic law during her ten years of studying law but also handled various international economic cases since graduating from Harvard. While working as an international lawyer at Vantage, she had also traveled to Valois with other lawyers to assist the Treaty and Law Department in handling trade disputes with other countries.
Director-General Linton had never been hesitant to praise her, not only repeatedly inviting her to work for the Treaty and Law Department but also publicly expressing his appreciation and commendation for her multiple times.
Director-General Linton must have observed her for many years, waiting for this opportunity to offer her an olive branch once her career underwent a reshuffle.
However, even if she took the head position, the salary might not be as high as the compensation offered by the ST factory in Z City yesterday.
Currently, Sienna Thornton has to bear her own and Melinda Linton’s living expenses, as well as Melinda Linton’s caregiver fee, medical expenses, and potentially huge surgery costs at any time.
Moreover, in the past two years, she had been accustomed to a moderately luxurious lifestyle by Simon Forrester. Her personal expenses alone, including car maintenance, cosmetics, skincare, clothing, shoes, bags, beauty treatments, occasional trips with Simon Forrester to Azure Harbor or abroad, come to at least forty to fifty thousand a month.
The bonuses owed by the Forrester Group are still eight months away from being fully paid. Although she’s been saving all these bonuses, she still has decades ahead of her; she can’t just live off that without any worry.
This is one aspect; from another aspect, if she agreed to take the head position, it would mean parachuting in, where, in addition to handling the complex work, she’d have to spend considerable time managing relationships between superiors and subordinates, addressing dissatisfaction among the many subordinates — just imagining that scenario makes her feel overwhelmed.
These two concerns became the obstacles preventing Sienna Thornton from entering the Treaty and Law Department. She didn’t immediately agree with Director-General Linton, only saying she needed a few days to consider and would get back to him on Monday.
.
After leaving the Treaty and Law Department, Sienna Thornton called the caregiver to confirm that she could stay with Melinda Linton in the apartment that evening, so she didn’t return to Z City but went straight back to Simon Forrester’s apartment.
After parking the car, she went to the fresh food market to buy groceries, preparing to wash the vegetables and cook dinner once she got back.
Actually, she wasn’t even sure if Simon Forrester would come home for dinner that night, as she hadn’t called to tell him she returned to Brimfield today, planning to surprise him in the evening.
After washing the vegetables, seeing that it was still early, Sienna Thornton took her Kindle to the recliner by the floor-to-ceiling window to relax for a while.
Spring had arrived just over ten days ago, and today Brimfield was blessed with rare sunshine. Just past four o’clock in the afternoon, looking out from the floor-to-ceiling window, the brilliant golden sun hung high in the sky, and though it would set in an hour, the golden light pouring into the room felt warming and filled with hope.
Lying on the recliner and basking in the sun, with the Kindle lightly resting on her abdomen, her arms cradled under her head, her legs crossed, her tranquil gaze drifted over to the other side of the cross-sea bridge, to Brimfield’s old city full of single-story houses, and her thoughts floated back to over a decade ago —
She started school early and skipped two grades in elementary school, so at thirteen, she went alone to Z City No. 1 High School for her secondary education.
Z City No. 1 High School was the best high school in the whole of H Province, with a 100% rate of students passing the national college entrance examination every year. She was in the science experimental class at that time, and except for her and a few classmates who went abroad for undergraduate studies, the rest all went to 985 universities.
However, in such a top-notch high school, no one expected that year’s science top scorer of H Province to be a sixteen-year-old girl from a famous impoverished county, who was two years younger than her classmates. Even more unexpected was her courage to venture alone to Azure Harbor for studies at age sixteen.
