Chapter 72: The Evildoer (Ch.72)

A new day dawned on the Eclipse Hunt territory but this day was not like any other, there was a grim atmosphere rested over the town and the usual bustle could not be seen on this day.

Quiet murmurs spread amongst the commoners as they whispered to each other whilst walking down the street.

"Did you hear it? A traitor was caught sneaking around the pack house last night, all the higher ranks have been in a gloomy state since last night." A vendor whispered to a she-wolf that purchased some fruits from her stall.

"Such a thing happened?" The she-wolf asked in surprised and the vendor nodded quickly, gesturing towards the pack house that towered above the rest of the town.

"Indeed, to think that there was such an evildoer in Eclipse Hunt...it really gives one chills." The vendor said with a shake of her head.

"How did you hear of this?" The she-wolf asked suspiciously.

"How? The news is all over Eclipse Hunt, you just go around a little more and you will hear of it...the alpha family has truly met misfortune." The vendor said with a shudder.

Luna Colleen sat in a daze, staring ahead at nothing in particular whilst Alpha Dane sat at her side, her hand held in his as he grazed a thumb over the back of her hand soothingly.

She seemed to be lost in thoughts, however the look in her eyes was one of shock and deep hurt and that was not the only noticeable change on this morning.

The pack house of the Eclipse Hunt was more bustling than usual and it was clear a shocking event had taken place the previous night.

The news of this event had already spread beyond the Eclipse Palace to the towns and even beyond, just like wildfire, there was no method of curbing it.

This was the sight Neveah had met when she finally awakened the next morning and came down to the living room after getting some much needed rest.

After Neveah’s revelation, she had gone straight to bed, she could not be bothered to follow up with the investigation or burden herself over such affairs of betrayal and the likes.

She had seen enough of it across two lifetimes that it did not even surprise her, it was only those who had the luxury to trust others that would feel betrayed and though it was sad, this was just the reality.

Neveah stood at a distance, taking in the situation. The look on Luna Colleen’s face was enough to show she was deeply affected by this event and found it hard to believe.

Neveah was not certain if it was cruel of her to believe it was not such a big deal to attract such shock from so many people, but Neveah guessed her life experiences were different from theirs and so she would never be able to relate.

Saffy’s betrayal was that of a friend, to Neveah who had been betrayed by her own mate and brother... this was not even slightly bothersome.

Rather than be so shocked, Neveah would have thought the Eclipse Hunt wolves would be glad that the mystery behind Luna Colleen’s poisoning had come to light without anyone having to do anything.

The culprit had gotten restless all on her own and had exposed herself, this was the best turn of events but it seemed Neveah was the only one looking at things from such an angle.

Everyone else was entirely focused on the possibility of one so trusted as Saffy to even contemplate harming the future heirs of the alpha family.

Neveah shook her head slightly, she had learned the hard way already, for things such as this, it was best to make an extremely ruthless example of Saffy before all eyes so no one would dare attempt such again.

Since the culprit had been caught and she had already said all that she needed to, Neveah did not see any reason to interfere further with the affairs of the Eclipse Hunt Pack.

How they dispensed punishment was up to their own judgement, it had nothing to do with Neveah and she would rather not be involved in it either.

Saffy was a respected pack doctor of the Eclipse Hunt and shared close ties with the Alpha and Luna, it was somewhat understandable that the revelation of Saffy’s true intentions had come as a great shock to the entire Eclipse Hunt Pack.

Neveah was not sure how the investigation had gone, but the atmosphere in the pack house gave her a good enough idea and it seemed they had been able to get the truth out of Saffy.

Neveah had her own reasons for staying out of it, other than the fact that it was not her place to interfere, she could see Saffy held a respectable position in the Eclipse Hunt Pack.

If Neveah accused her too fiercely, she would attract unnecessary attention to her ownself and who knew just how many eyes her step mother had in the Eclipse Hunt Pack?

Neveah was also not certain how much her word counted for when placed against that of a family friend the alpha family had known and trusted for years, she did not want to appear to be inciting discord.

She had only stated the facts and reported the evidence, leaving it up to Alpha Dane and Luna Colleen to figure out the rest if they were willing to was what Neveah felt was right.

As for the rest, she intended to stay detached from it and so Neveah retreated, intending to head back up to her room and while away the time till the effects of this event had died out.

However Neveah had only taken a step away when Alpha Dane took notice of her and called to her.

"Veah? Why are you just leaving?" Alpha Dane asked and his words seemed to bring Luna Colleen back down to Earth.

Neveah sighed inaudibly as she turned and headed back to the living room.

"Veah, you are awake." Luna Colleen said in a tired tone. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

"Yes, I have been for a while now." Neveah replied with a nod as she took a seat on the couch where Dechlan sat, also looking baffled at the situation.

"How long have you been standing there?" Alpha Dane asked again.

"A while." Neveah replied in her characteristic blank tone.

"We must have been too distracted to notice you." Luna Colleen said with a guilty smile and Neveah shook her head.

"It is no bother, it must not be easy to accept." Neveah said in understanding.

Luna Colleen nodded slowly, lifting a hand to brush back the hair falling over her eyes.

"Saffy and I...we grew up together. I... I considered her as close as my own family, other than Vincent, she was my only other sibling." Luna Colleen said, still shaking her head in disbelief.

"I could never have expected she would do such a thing, why would she want to harm me so?" Luna Colleen asked in a shaky tone.

"I have lost so many of my pups, repeated miscarriages and I never knew what my fault was, I never knew what I had done to deserve such pain...but Saffy? I just..." Luna Colleen trailed off, unable to continue her words.

Neveah pursed her lips, she was not certain how to react in the face of such an emotional display, she was someone who always maintained an emotional distance from everyone,

And though she sympathized with Luna Colleen in this moment, she did not know what to say and she knew for certain she would say the wrong thing and so she settled for remaining quiet, it was always the best option.

"Vincent handled her interrogation, Leen was against it but after the contents of the vial was confirmed to be the Moon Whisper poison, it was imperative to find out what more she had done."

"In the process, she revealed all her involvement in Leen’s miscarriages so far." Dechlan explained what had happened in the time Neveah was asleep.

"She said I deserved it...there was no remorse in her eyes at all, how could I be so blind to her true intentions?" Luna Colleen asked.

"She deserves to die a thousand times! I will have her torn apart limb from limb till there is nothing left of her evil self!" Alpha Dane snarled, barely containing his rage for the benefit of his mate.

"That is a fitting arrangement." Neveah murmured with a shrug as she got up to her feet, she was about to leave but stopped halfway.

"Leen, one can never know the true intentions of another...but one must know how to protect their ownself. Your pups are your priority...do not shed tears over the unworthy."

"I have put in too much effort to watch you harm your health, if you are going to cry over an evildoer... leave it for after you have delivered your pups, then you may cry all you want." Neveah advised before she headed away.
