Chapter 65: The Meaning Behind A Gift (Ch.65)

"Eira..." Neveah murmured slowly, her eyes widened slightly and her heart trembled within her chest as she read through the note over and over again, yet each read did not make it any easier to comprehend.

Before her eyes was the very first mention of her mother in eighteen years, giving her the one thing Neveah had sought for so desperately, the only thing that had kept her tied to her father’s side for so long,

Not daring to disobey or harbor any opinions for fear that she would lose the only chance to ever know her mother.

She had begged her father time and time again for years to tell her something, anything about her mother... anything at all.

Yet not once has he let anything slip, other than when he compared her personality to that of her mother’s in a ridiculing way, so what exactly was this?

Why was he suddenly sending Neveah such a note with such content when she was already so far away in the Eclipse Hunt Pack? Just when she was at the edge of getting the only thing she had ever desired?

Could it be that he had sensed something was off with Neveah? Or was he only being cautious, ensuring his trophy daughter was kept in check?

"What does father mean by this?!" Neveah asked in a dark tone, and though she asked it out loud, she knew within her heart exactly what her father wanted.

How could she not know a man she had spent seventeen years catering to all his demands and orders?

This note he had dispatched to her was a threat...a threat warning Neveah not to gain any ideas, a threat reminding her that he was still in control of her fate though she was at such a great distance.

’How dare he mess with us?! I shall not spare him!’ Neveah’s wolf raged in her mind, sharing in Neveah’s fury.

Neveah rose up to her feet, storming out of her room, she hurried down the stairs, dashing past a baffled Dechlan again without saying a word to him.

Neveah arrived in the living room where Lucas sat conversing with Alpha Dane, Luna Colleen and Vincent.

All eyes moved up to settle Neveah and Dechlan also came in behind her seeming to have followed her in concern.

Neveah paid them no heed though she suspected she was most likely the topic of their conversation before she had arrived,

But that did not matter, her gaze was fixed on Lucas whom she stormed up to.

"What did my father say when he handed you that gift?" Neveah demanded in a chilling cold tone.

"Uhmm... I’m not sure, he did not say much..." Lucas murmured uncertainly and Neveah’s gaze narrowed into a deeper frown.

"Lucas... I know my father, think of it again." Neveah insisted.

"He said to keep warm and not catch a cold and he said he was entrusting you to me for this time and I am to pay close attention..." Lucas trailed off.

Neveah’s gaze narrowed slightly as she scoffed beneath her breath, Lucas was obviously lying and he was not very good at it.

"For me to keep warm...or for you to keep me warm? Which did he say?" Neveah asked in a dark tone.

"Veah... I..." Lucas began, unwilling to use the exact words her father had said.

"Which did he say Lucas?!" Neveah seethed furiously.

"He said he intends to betrothe you to me and it is up to me to convince you to be willing...with whatever measures,"

"An Omega conceives a child easily, if you are to submit for a night, I will have nothing to worry about regarding an heir and the betrothal will be set in stone..." Lucas revealed in a grim tone.

"How could he say such words?! How could he bargain on his daughter’s honor when she is still unmated and only just came of age?!" Luna Colleen exclaimed in horror while everyone else in the room was in silent shock.

Neveah released a mirthless chuckle, Lucas’ words were clear enough, her father had magnanimously granted Lucas Varleston his consent to bed Neveah and had sent her a gift to ensure her submission.

Even up till this moment, a mere gift from her father held such great meaning that she did not dare accept it.

This was just the kind of man her father was and Neveah again questioned if truly they shared the same blood, for how could he hold no affection or care for her at all? Not even the slightest...

"I hold no untoward intents Veah, you know this. I have accepted your thoughts on my proposal...His Grace said none of these directly to me but to my father instead."

"My father only relayed them to me in confidence as he was also burdened by it. I was ordered to deliver the gift, I cannot defy the order... I also wanted to see you..." Lucas explained quickly, trailing off at the end.

Neveah heaved a sigh, running a hand through her hair as she turned her face away and took a moment to calm herself.

"I know your heart Lucas, you are also helpless in this situation. I will not hold this against you." Neveah murmured as she finally turned back.

"I have just heard from Alpha Dane... regarding your birth and everything else. I understand now that you turned down my proposal for my own sake..."

"The Alpha King is scheming and cruel... I’m sorry for all you have had to go through Veah." Lucas said sincerely and Neveah shook her head.

"It is my own fate, what is there to be sorry for? If my father deems it fit to pawn my honor off for benefits.. I can only think of methods to protect myself." Neveah said.

"What do you plan to do?" Lucas asked and Neveah shook her head slowly.

"I will not be forced to marriage against my will Lucas, not by anyone. Not for any cause..." Neveah murmured as she glanced down at the note in her hand.

"What does it say?" Lucas asked suspiciously.

"My father is willing to tell me what I have sought to know of my birth mother for years, if I submit to you in bed and perhaps conceive your child too." Neveah said as she ripped the letter into shreds.

"Veah..." Luna Colleen said as they watched Neveah tear up what she had begged for for seventeen years.

"There goes his hold on me... convey my words to my father. My mother bears the name Vilma and is the Alpha Queen of the Eclipse Domain... I know of no one else." Neveah forced out through gritted teeth.

"He will be furious...he might order for your return." Lucas said in a grim tone and Neveah scoffed.

"I have faced my father’s fury a thousand times before this, I will face it again if need be. I shall not accompany you today Lucas, I wish to be alone... I will find you once I am calm." Neveah said as she turned around.

Just as she was about striding away, a female warrior of the Eclipse Hunt Pack walked into the living room but froze up almost immediately right in Neveah’s path.

Neveah frowned slightly at the frozen female who stared behind Neveah and Neveah trailed her gaze to see a wide eyed Lucas.

Neveah’s gaze moved between the two as understanding dawned,

"Mine!!" Lucas’ wolf declared possessively, confirming what Neveah had already suspected and Neveah hurriedly moved out of the way so she did not get tossed aside for blocking Lucas’ path to his mate.

In the blink of an eye, Lucas was before his mate, pulling her into his arms as every other topic of discussion was completely forgotten in the light of such an exciting event.

"Do you know how long I have waited... how long I have searched for you?" Lucas whispered to his mate as he hugged her tightly to himself.

’This was what a mate bond should have looked like... this was what a blessing should have looked like, yet whom was I granted as a mate?...’ Neveah thought, her heart aching.

Neveah had long accepted the fact that she was not born lucky, she was not worthy of this happiness... she equally did not long for it.

She had seen what the mate bond held in store for her, what was a blessing to others was to her a curse and a death sentence... this was just her own fate.

"Congrats to the Eclipse Claw!" Alpha Dane declared with a warm smile on his lips and despite her own worries, Neveah could not help smiling slightly too.

It took a moment before the two pulled away from each other and Lucas turned to Neveah, the happiness in his eyes eased Neveah’s heart to an extent.

"Veah... I..." Lucas stuttered, seemingly still in disbelief.

"You have kept faith Lucas, you deserve this..." Neveah said with a smile.
