Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 646: Something Small...or Someone ()
The ascending room came to a stop at the second level and for a moment, even while everyone else filed out, Neveah remained standing within the ascending room.
A cold chill wafted into the ascending room, coming from the halls of the second level, that familiar chill exuded by the walls of Dragon Keep, especially at times like this when the greatest flame of the lands was not within these halls and had not been for too long.
Neveah knew the halls of Dragon Keep had always been freezing cold, but it was never this bad...at this point, the chill was deathly.
And while the Dragon lords remained unaffected and unfazed, Neveah held back a shiver and she could see Tara struggled too, as did Adrienne, despite her best efforts to conceal it.
Menarx saw it too, taking off his outer robe, he placed it over Adrienne’s shoulder, and she smiled gratefully, her eyes filled with adoration as she gazed up at him.
Menarx returned the smile, no words were exchanged between them, all that needed to be said was said in each gaze they shared.
As much as she tried not to be aware of such little exchanges, Neveah still found herself taking notice of them...
Other than the chill, everything else was exactly the same. Just as Neveah recalled it like it had been just yesterday since she hurried down these halls to receive Menarx at the landing platform.
But back in Dune City, the memories of such times had felt like centuries in the past.
"Veah?" Everon’s questioning tone drew Neveah out of her thoughts.
Neveah glanced over at Everon, clearing her throat slightly before she suppressed the nostalgic feeling and stepped out into the second level.
’There is nothing to be unsettled about, Veah. We lost everything that binded us to these halls then...’ Neveah’s wolf reminded her.
’I know...it has just been a while... everything looks exactly the same too, like not even a day has gone by.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.
’Dragon’s are creatures of habit. It is no surprise that they prefer their residence unaffected and untouched by the passing of time... time is just another passing factor in their world. A year for us is long...here, it is not so.’ Neveah’s wolf added her thoughts.
’You are correct.’ Neveah agreed with her wolf’s assertions.
The past year had been a blend of months of unrest and months of peace and after the year was up, like the quiet before the tempest, the stronghold had been tossed into complete pandemonium right afterwards.
Nowhere was the same, not Fort Scabbard or any of the surrounding Fortresses, not Dune City, not the White Dunes, not the barrier, not even the dark lands... nowhere had been left untouched.
But somehow, the mighty Dragon Keep, though there was a visible change in occupancy, its appearance and the aura it exuded was just the same as always, though more chilling.
Neveah had been lost in her thoughts till she heard a light sneeze coming from somewhere down the hall.
"I think we might all want to move to the side." Kirgan announced from where he led the group down the hall.
Kirgan moved slightly to the side and Menarx grumbled beneath his breath but did the same, pulling Adrienne along with him.
Neveah frowned slightly, she did not catch the urgency until something came shooting straight for them with a speed so great, Neveah could barely make out what it was.
Neveah moved then, swiftly to the side but Tara who was behind Neveah was not fast enough and Neveah guessed she would not be, knowing Tara was more human than she was anything else.
After moving herself, Neveah’s hand shot out on instinct to protect Tara and she caught hold of the flying object, believing it to be some weapon of some sort.
Neveah was however surprised when a loud screech echoed down the hall and it was only then Neveah realized she held onto a part of the wing of an alarmingly small dragon.
The dragon was smaller than any other Neveah had seen, just about the size of two wolf cubs standing side by side, though slightly bigger still. Its scales were soft too, unlike the rock hard scales of all the dragons Neveah knew,
They were a strange ashen shade at some points and greyish at others, making it a blend of graduating silvery shades.
"What in the world?!" Neveah exclaimed, retrieving her hand warily as a pair of small, furious eyes turned on her.
"This is..." Neveah asked hesitantly as the small dragon flew closer to her, till its dragon head was just an inch away from Neveah’s face and its furious eyes glared at her in the eyes.
Neveah leaned backwards, passing a nervous look to a thoroughly amused looking Everon who had been behind Tara.
"Veah..." A familiar voice called to Neveah.
Neveah glanced over to the side slowly, cautious that any movement would further anger the small dragon, her gaze settled on the familiar face of Lady Kaliana who stood some distance down the hall, with a warm smile settled on her lips.
Neveah’s gaze then moved back to the dragon still glaring at her and then over to Lady Kaliana, and she stared between them for a moment.
"This must be your first meeting with Young Lord Zephyroth since he hatched." Everon finally replied.
"Zephyroth..." Neveah recalled the royal announcement given at the birth of Kaliana’s son all those years back.
Though birthed alarmingly prematurely at the fourth month of conception, and in an unhatched form, unlike other births that reached full term, Jian had bestowed him a royal name immediately,
Zephyroth, the first royal prince of Jian’s dynasty.
"This is... that small dragon egg that stubbornly refused to hatch?!" Neveah asked, chuckling nervously when the small dragon growled lowly in its throat, clearly understanding Neveah referred to him.
"Yes, Veah...he is my son." Kaliana confirmed, chuckling quietly at the situation Neveah found herself in with Zephyroth.
"Well...hello there..." Neveah greeted warily.
