Chapter 633: Subconscious (Ch.634)

"Veah, Veah... open your eyes, beloved..." A familiar, soothing voice called Neveah.

The voice was deepened with concern and all of Neveah’s senses came alive with recognition.

’That voice... I know that voice...’ Neveah thought to herself.

Neveah’s eyes fluttered open with a gasp, desperately sucking in a deep breath of air and while she still struggled to settle her breathing, her eyes immediately settled on the familiar face of Jian.

He was crouched down and gazed at her, his expression contorted in concern.

"Are you alright, beloved?" Jian asked Neveah, his gaze searching hers.

"Jian... how..." Neveah trailed off, she glanced around frantically, realising that somehow, she was laid back on the surface of the stream, floating.

Her surroundings had not changed, it was the same forest they had just been in, but Dante and the rest of the company was nowhere to be found.

Now, there was just her and Jian present and nothing else.

"I do not... understand this, how are you here? I was not asleep... I..." Neveah asked Jian in a baffled tone.

"I do not know, neither was I. I was in meditation, but you pulled me in... I felt the pendant reacting, I knew you were calling for me and I came." Jian replied to Neveah, also uncertain.

"Meditation... between a conscious and unconscious state. I was also losing consciousness but my wolf is still conscious, somewhere in between... the pendants must have connected because of our similar state." Neveah contemplated.

"Now, I am floating on water..." Neveah murmured, shaking her head in disbelief at how different her situation had been a moment ago.

A moment ago, she had been drowning in this very same stream.

"There is much to the magic the pendant holds that we do not yet understand. But tell me, what is going on Veah? Losing consciousness? Are you in danger?" Jian asked Neveah in concern.

"I..." Neveah began to explain but just as she thought better of it, a vice-like grip took a hold of her heel.

Exactly in the same manner it had a moment ago.

Caught off guard, Neveah let out a scream as she was once again pulled into the murky depths.

"Veah!" Jian roared in alarm, he reached for Neveah’s hand but narrowly missed it.

As Neveah was once again pulled beneath the surface, she struggled violently against the force pulling her to the depths even as an inky darkness creeped in from all around her, tainting the clear waters.

Just as it was before, Neveah’s struggle proved futile. Neveah sensed that familiar oppressive magic rise within her, an overwhelming surge that would surely break past her bounds.

Neveah knew what that meant, Demevirld’s magic was all too familiar now and Neveah was not surprised when a dim, golden glow reflected in the water, coming from her form.

A helpless feeling settled in the pit of Neveah’s stomach, one she had not felt in the longest time.

It was either death or surrender to Demevirld, neither of these choices were appealing to Neveah.

To wield Demevirld’s magic in such capacity would have consequences Neveah could not afford.

However, that feeling of helplessness dissipated just as quickly as it had come as Neveah felt a hand rest on the small of her back,

Just that light hold prevented Neveah from sinking any further, even though the grip on her ankle did not let up.

Neveah glanced over her shoulder, her eyes meeting those familiar mismatched orbs.

His silver tresses swayed in the water behind him and his lips stretched into a small, comforting smile.

No words needed to be said, looking into Jian’s eyes, Neveah knew what he was going to do... and what part she played in it.

Neveah winced visibly, swallowing down her terror as she felt for their bond, in the same way she had been moved to do at the barrier when the death gale attacked.

The bond was right there, at Neveah’s fingertips the moment she needed it, pulsing and alive, far stronger than it had been at the barrier when she first attempted this... sharing Demevirld’s magic to Jian. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Neveah let the magic rise within her, channeling it through the barrier, she poured every ounce of Demevirld’s magic she could reach into their bond and she watched the glow come to life in Jian’s eyes.

But unlike it did with her, it did not change the colour of his eyes but instead made them glow as they were.

As she channelled all of the magic away, Neveah slumped against Jian, feeling all her strength leave her completely.

The grip on Neveah’s ankle freed her at this moment and a large black, creature with slime covered scales floated up until it was on level with them, its sinister gaze fixed on them, yellow eyes narrowed.

Its jaws were opened, exposing sharp rows of blackened teeth and behind it, a long tail ending in a sharp slasher floated about restlessly.

Neveah winced visibly, her mind recalled the pain of being slashed repeatedly by that tail, like it was happening all over again.

But Neveah did not fret, there was a familiar confidence settled within her, the same she had felt at the barrier when the death gale charged for them.

There was a moment where it seemed the world stilled, right before the creature charged at them, tail slashing wildly.

Jian casually lifted a hand and his flames came to light, surrounded by a dim golden glow, they burned brightly and fiercely even in the water.

With a slight sway of his fingers, a torrent of flames was unleashed at the creature, furiously engulfing it in just a split second.

Any scream of pain it might have released was lost to the water and in barely a few moments, there was nothing left, not even ash.

’You killed it...’ Neveah thought to Jian, somehow she knew he could hear her.

It was their own world after all, a world forged by the merging of their subconscious.

’I am not truly here Veah, only in your head...it is you who killed it. Return now, heal your wounds and come to me again...’ Jian’s response sounded in Neveah’s mind.

It was then Neveah’s body gave into exhaustion and her eyes went closed, losing consciousness.
