Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 613: Something Covered Up ()
Neveah was quiet for a moment, letting Lord Mycroft’s words settle. She could not deny the truth in them.
One moment she had lowered her guard and Demevirld had taken full advantage to make himself known...to make certain Neveah would be left with no choice but to wield him or risk losing much more.
"Lord Mycroft, you do not speak to Veah in such a manner! You will watch your tone and your words!" Everon interrupted firmly before Lord Mycroft could say more.
"No, Everon... I...he is right." Neveah prevented Everon from saying anymore.
Harsh as Lord Mycroft’s words were, they were honest and objective which Neveah realized no one was being so with her anymore... because they cared too much for her feelings now.
So much so that even if she was blind to the truth, Neveah was not certain anyone would be willing to hurt her and put her in order,
If Neveah was being honest, there was only one who had always done so...who had always coldly and concisely reprimanded her, who would tell her the truth even if it was the most bitter and painful truth and it was King Jian.
Even if at the time, Neveah took it to be in his disdain for her, Neveah was slowly realizing it was beyond that.
"He is right...I have been too careless with Demevirld... for someone who hopes to keep him hidden. All the dragon lords must already have suspicions..." Neveah murmured
"Knowing how cunning he could be, I should never have come in contact with the couple at the gates of Dune City. Now, everyone will expect me to perform the very same miracle for their loved ones, and if I cannot..." Neveah trailed off at this point.
"Scabbard will suffer for it." Neveah finished her own statement.
"Veah, you are not seriously considering this, are you?!" Everon asked in disbelief.
"Mycroft, by orders of Our Liege, Veah is not at liberty to wield the magic within her as it is to be extracted in order to limit the harm it can and will cause her! You cannot request such of her, it is tantamount to defying Our Liege’s orders!" Everon hissed,
His words were directed to Lord Mycroft since Neveah would not respond.
"Do we know that for sure? What do we even know? Demevirld has been kept a secret from even us dragon lords since it came to existence! Few of us even know of its existence and even fewer still know exactly what it is and what it could do! Not even you can say for certain!"
Lord Mycroft’s expression was perfectly calm but displeased at Everon’s attempt to enforce a royal order that was not given to him on him.
However, his next words completely shattered the peaceful atmosphere in the hall.
"All I know is that you keep taking blood from Elle and so many other light bloods to find a solution as you have claimed! But unbeknownst to them, your only solution is to find a suitable replacement to transfer the magic to, is it not?! A suitable sacrifice, yes?! Someone who is better suited to lose their mind?!" Lord Mycroft countered.
Neveah’s eyes widened, as did that of Dante and Estelle as all eyes whirled around to settle on Everon.
Everon’s expression was dark and his gaze narrowed into a glare, fixed on Lord Mycroft.
"Mycroft...can you take responsibility for this disrespect? I may not be the King’s guard or Lord of a Fortress, but by bloodline and titles, you should know who is more superior." Everon asked.
"Is His Eminence speaking of responsibility now? The same responsibility I spoke of but a moment ago? If we are speaking about responsibilities...no one can escape it, would you not agree?" Lord Mycroft asked calmly, his eyes on Neveah.
"I understand you do not know enough about Demevirld, we have not allowed word of him to spread even long before now and it is no fault of Neveah’s,"
"Our Liege has decided Demevirld is not a risk worth taking if it endangers Neveah’s life, if you do not understand why, you must trust in Our Liege’s judgement that this is the right thing... and I also will do what I must." Everon replied firmly.
Neveah could not believe her ears, she had waited for Everon to counter Lord Mycroft’s accusations, to say something in his defense but instead, it was a blatant admission.
"Is this...true?" Neveah asked slowly, glancing between Everon and Lord Mycroft.
The hall descended into pin drop silence at this moment.
Everon’s gaze moved to Neveah and Neveah did not miss the guilt that flashed through his eyes.
"Veah, I..." Everon began to say but Neveah interrupted him.
"No, do not answer me. Elle, you answer... has Everon been taking your blood?!" Neveah asked Estelle instead.
Estelle’s eyes widened as all the attention fell to her.
"Do not cover it up, Estelle. It is impossible to do so now." Lord Mycroft stated.
"Dante!" Neveah hissed when Estelle looked tongue tied, not daring to directly accuse Lord Everon before so many eyes.
Dante also winced visibly, passing a wary glance to a still calm looking Everon who was perfectly silent as Neveah had requested.
"Do not look at him, look at me! Dante!" Neveah hissed
Dante’s brows twitched in frustration and then he nodded slowly.
"I cannot lie to you, Veah. It is indeed so." Dante admitted.
Neveah sucked in a sharp breath at the confirmation.
"For how long?" Neveah asked quietly.
"Since... the breaking." Estelle spoke up this time.
"And it is not just you, but many others...light bloods... For an entire month..." Neveah murmured, her fists clenched in her lap. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
No one answered this time, Neveah’s words were not a question but a statement.
"Why has this been kept from me?" Neveah asked slowly.
"I..." Estelle began to say but Neveah cut her off.
"You and Dante obviously did it because he asked you to! You can’t answer this question!" Neveah snarled, rage surging swiftly through her veins.
"Veah...calm, you must remain calm." Everon reminded Neveah sternly.
However, given the present situation, Everon’s voice was not as effective in calming Neveah as it usually would be... instead, it achieved the exact opposite.
And if Neveah was not calm... neither would Demevirld.
