Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 610: Another Way 2 ()
Jian’s gaze furrowed slightly at Kaideon’s words.
"How is it that you have a method to send word and you did not do so the moment you arrived here? You realize Veah was terribly concerned for your well being?" Jian asked Kaideon.
"I have only been here for barely a day longer than you have, Jian. I am well aware I have burdened Veah, there has not been a moment she is not on my mind." Kaideon said with a heavy sigh.
Jian recalled the time difference between the stronghold and this dimension. It had barely been a week since Kaideon’s disappearance in the stronghold, it was only natural he had not been here for long.
"You faced a battle upon your arrival here." Jian murmured.
"What can I say? Trouble seems to seek me out fondly in recent times...it was better a golem than Azkar himself." Kaideon replied with a casual shrug.
"That is true." Jian did not disagree with Kaideon’s words.
One forlorn beast was a better option than an actual dark sorcerer who could summon dozens of them at will.
"Tell me, this item you speak of, it is the pendant you hold so dear?" Jian guessed, it had occurred to him already that this was why Kaideon had dropped something so precious to him in the dark lands, knowing Coran and Orin would find it and send it back to Neveah.
Kaideon nodded slowly, pulling out another pendant that was an exact replica of the one he always wore, only that this was just a regular pendant shaped like a snowflake.
"The pendants were a set. The silver refined with my flame forms the base material, the pendant itself was enchanted by a witch in Eira’s Winter domain. Veah holds mine and this was Eira’s..." Kaideon trailed off, glancing down at the pendant with a pained smile.
"When I discovered her disappearance and made the flight to wolf territory beyond the sea... with no word, nor explanation...this was all that was left behind... the one thing with which I could have possibly found her..." Kaideon breathed a heavy sigh, the pain of his past loss heavy on every word.
"I never thought I would be willing to look at this piece again. The memories it brings with it haunt me with each breath I take...but I knew I could not risk losing my daughter, so I took precautions and carried both with me." Kaideon murmured, handing the pendant over to Jian.
"Both pendants are eternally linked to each other, with it, you can communicate with the one who holds the matching pair. So long as the pendant is on their person, your dreams will be merged by the spell on the pendants at every moment of sleep."
"Now, I know Veah will never take off her mother’s pendant, she is intuitive and must have guessed there is more to it than just a neck piece. She equally knows how precious it is to me, she will not let it out of her sight and as long as it is on her person, you can reach her at any moment she gives in to sleep."
"I wish to speak to my daughter and know she is safe...but at this moment, you will need this more than I do..." Kaideon said to Jian.
"I..." Jian sucked in a deep breath of relief, unsure of how to express it.
He had convinced himself that he would be okay, that he was okay but the truth was that, in the past two days, his predator had been on the very edge, and he could sparsely think straight.
"I thought it would take days...or weeks..." Jian said in a tone of dread.
"It may be much longer before we can return to the stronghold, Jian. But you are newly bonded, and as much as I do not favor these circumstances or want you anywhere near my daughter for that matter...a true bond is absolute, all consuming..."
"Your predator will constantly spiral out of control the longer apart you are from her and this anxiety you are unaccustomed to is only the beginning... even I had a back up plan, you should know better than to torture yourself in this manner... and Veah too." Kaideon pointed out the obvious, his tone displeased.
"I could not bring Veah into certain danger... I would make the same choice again if I had to, even if I must grit my teeth to survive each day." Jian said blankly.
"And what of Veah? If you wish to grit your teeth, that is on you. What of her and how this unplanned distance will affect her?" Kaideon asked Jian.
Kaideon scoffed beneath his breath and got up to his feet.
"You have much to learn of the bond shared between dragon and rider... and even more to learn of Veah’s personality. I have heard from Orin... that somehow the merging of the scale was completed." Kaideon said slowly.
"How it happened is a mystery to them but not to me. I know well enough what you have done... the merging will make certain this separation tortures you both all the more. Did you consider that? That the danger to Veah might not be this dimension but you?" Kaideon deadpanned.
Jian let out a low, warning growl. Kaideon’s words were not at all pleasant to hear, even more so because they were true.
"But by all means, My Liege. Keep at it, I will be more than happy to keep my daughter at the Dunes, where she belongs." Kaideon concluded with a stiff smile.
Kaideon got up to his feet and excused himself, leaving behind a dark faced Jian.
"He has no regard for authority when it comes to his daughter..." Jian murmured to himself, forcing his predator to calm.
Jian’s gaze moved to the pendant in his hand. He could not deny the fact that Kaideon’s back up plan to remain in contact with Veah was perhaps the only thing that would enable him remain sane for the time it took to return to the stronghold.
"Dream walking..." Jian murmured quietly.
