Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 608: Under Attack ()
Lord Starron glanced over at Ranjor for a moment before he returned his attention to King Jian. The other Dragon Lords did not have much better reactions, even Kaideon’s expression had changed to a dark and somewhat somber look.
There were memories the dragon lords would have much rather never recalled and there were events of the past they simply did not speak of, it was tacit agreement and those days of bondage were one of such times.
The events of those days were never brought up, except the necessity to speak of them was absolute.
Now, King Jian had brought up the past himself and it had the dragon lords in his presence deeply concerned.
"We do not know much of the rules of the dark lord’s game. Those who were chosen to participate in the game almost never returned, and the few who did return..." Lord Ranjor trailed off at this point.
Lord Ranjor did not need to complete his statement, all the dragon lords present already knew what words were to come after.
’Those who had returned were never the same...’
"My point is, we could hardly piece together a reliable account of what happened...of what this game was exactly." Lord Ranjor proceeded to complete his words.
"There is one who could provide an account of the events that took place in the Champion’s game..." Cassian interjected.
Silence settled over the dragon lords present in the hall and all eyes were fixed on King Jian.
"Asrig..." King Jian murmured in slow tone, a name he had not spoken out loud for far too long.
King Jian was quiet for a moment. It was strange to him, to have cause to speak of his brother, without concerns that the wrath of his subordinates would be triggered.
’"Asrig was never fully willing to share his experience, but from the little he said, I could understand the rules of the game." King Jian continued.
"The Champion’s game was one of the dark lords’ favorite means of entertainment. And it served many purposes, on one hand, it was a reminder to our kind...never to forget our place..." King Jian’s tone was cold and dark as he spoke these words.
"On the other hand, it was a medium to test the prowess of the dark sorcerers before they were assigned greater duties."
"A location that could only be accessed with magic, home to thousands of beasts...a daily fight for survival, where there can only be victory for defeat would mean death..." King Jian said calmly.
"From Asrig’s words, the Champion’s game was always held here...right in this dimension ." King Jian said.
"On my father’s orders, Asrig made a record of all he could recall of the dimension...and the Champion’s game. But out of respect for the terrors Asrig faced, my father did not permit for this record to be seen by any other eyes but his. This record should still be stored in the hidden archives of Dragon Keep..."
"If we can lay hands on that record, we could seal the black sea again....and prevent the beasts from escaping. If these repeated attacks stop being a concern, it would be easier for the mages to reverse the spell on Fort Blazed." King Jian said thoughtfully.
"But we are in here and the record is in the hidden archive..." Lord Starron pointed out.
Before any further words could be exchanged, the loud tolling of the city bells interrupted the silence sharply.
"We are under attack." Lord Starron announced grimly.
The doors came open and two blazed dragons strode in.
"My Liege, The Black Sea has begun stirring." One of the blazed dragons reported.
"The city?" King Jian asked immediately.
"Already taken care of. Motran scouts ahead to identify the beast attacking." The blazed dragon reported.
"The recent attacks have gotten more and more fierce, the last attack...Lord Kaideon was our only certain bet for victory." Lord Starron reported.
Lord Starron’s words did not come as a surprise to King Jian, with each victory, the opponent that followed would be almost twice the strength of the previous, like the flaws from the previous clash had been calculated and made up for.
And the rules did not change, only a single dragon could enter the battle circle. Only a single dragon could represent Fort blazed and face the attack to earn them a few more days of peace by claiming a victory.
Blazed was quickly running out of lord dragons strong enough to single handedly take on the challenge.
"A Great Orc, My Liege..." One of the blazed dragons provided the report on the beast attacking.
"Orcs are far more ferocious than golems...but a Great Orc..." Lord Starron trailed off.
"During the uprising, it took at least three dragons to bring down the Great Orc guarding the gates of the dark lord’s palace." Lord Ranjor completed.
A beast that required the combined efforts of three dragons was no easy opponent, the dragon lords knew this much.
"I will go." Kaideon volunteered without hesitation.
If the previous attack had left even the Dune Lord, one of the Stronghold’s best battered, then there was no telling if even the Dune lord could return victorious from this.
"At full strength, you may stand a good chance, but you are barely healed, Dune lord." Lord Starron disagreed immediately.
"I know well enough what is at stake, I will not lose...and most of the ten blazed dragons that have guarded this long have sustained injuries...Our Liege’s party has more mages than our kin, Orin and Rauron are otherwise occupied."
"None of the others are on par with me...I am the best chance we have." Kaideon insisted.
"What am I to you, then?" Cassian interrupted with a raised brow.
"You are the only King’s guard present here, you cannot leave Our Liege’s side." Kaideon said directly.
Cassian passed a look to King Jian who had remained silent through the deliberations.
"Go...do not end it swiftly, drag it out..." King Jian instructed.
Cassian raised a brow but there was a tacit agreement between both dragon lords as Cassian soon nodded and strode away.
