Chapter 605: A Joke of Fate (Ch.606)

"Quickly! Put up the bars!" A burly tavern keeper cried out as she dashed into a small tavern, panting heavily,

A basket of vegetables was clutched tightly to her bosom and an anxious look flashed through her eyes.

There were two workers already at the ready and the moment she gave the order, they rushed to fetch a large wood which they carried over to the door.

Just as they were about to bar the door shut, a hand stopped the door from closing completely.

The eyes of the two workers widened in horror and the entire tavern fell into silence.

"Just a moment." A low voice said, pushing the door back open,

The old wooden door produced a rickety sound like it would fall of it’s hinges any day now.

A sigh of relief sounded from one of the workers as a man strode in, clad in black robes and a hood.

"It is only you, Kaz." The worker murmured in relief, stepping aside to let the man through.

And then they swiftly went about barring up the door to the tavern.

"Hurry now, take a seat. Creator alone knows how fierce this challenge will get." The burly tavern keeper urged Kaz.

The tavern was located in the slums of Fort Blazed. It was not a completely run down place, just the part of the city where one could not expect to find the finest of men or the more refined establishments, it was equally the least populated part of Blazed City.

Kaz glanced around the tavern, a small frown settled on his face to find even in such times, there were still some patrons seated around, halfway into intoxication and there were a good number of them.

’One would think after their entire life was uprooted, quite literally, they would find other more refined hobbies.’ Kaz thought to himself as he dusted his coat.

But Kaz knew he had no rights to judge at this time, it was only because of the existence of this measly bunch that he could conceal himself within the bounds of Fort Blazed for this long.

Kaz navigated his way to the very back of the inn where he took a seat at the table.

It was not long after he was seated that a serving girl brought over a tankard of ale, placing it down on his table.

Kaz’s frown deepened at the sight of it, the stench of low quality ale repulsed him, but one could not visit a tavern such as this and seek fine nectar.

Kaz pulled back his hood and leaned against the back of his seat. It was vain, but Kaz still hoped to catch a moment of sleep in the time it would take for this danger to pass.

But that did not seem feasible when the first earth shaking roar echoed from beyond the city wall.

"What beast do you think it would be this time?" One of the more sober patrons asked in a tone of apprehension.

"The Black Sea cannot be predicted, it could be anything. In the past month, they have faced trolls, rock golems, troll golems.. the strength of the Blazed dragons is waning, they grow weary with each victory, how much longer till they are overcome?"

"Will we live to see the day Fort Blazed returns to the stronghold?" Another patron said in a resigned tone.

"That damned dark sorcerer and this cursed dimension! This is all his doing!" A third voice exclaimed in rage.

Kaz listened to the exchange in silence, his eyes still closed.

’A month...’ Kaz thought to himself.

Time moved slower in the dimension of beasts than it did in the real world. While over a year had gone by since Fort Blazed disappeared, it had only been a little over a month here in the dimension of beasts.

Kaz had plotted it out perfectly before he had executed the spell. To the last detail, in the dimension of beasts, it would be at least a decade in the real world before Fort Blazed ran out of supplies to sustain life in this dimension.

That way, he could return the missing part of the world whole when His Lordship had taken the reins of the stronghold.

The dimension of beasts was the greatest and most mysterious weapon of the dark empire, the source of the dimension dated back to long before the reign of the dark lord and so Kaz also did not know much of it but the fact that it was accessible only to the dark lord’s most priced sorcerers.

After the uprising, the knowledge to access this dimension had long been lost..but with the aid of the Signe tribe and a certain Dragon King, Azkar had recovered this knowledge.

To access it himself had not been so easy, it had taken decades of practice to achieve this feat and even then, Kaz barely had any control of this dimension save for going in and out.

If he had, he would not have ended up stuck here himself.

Kaz grunted beneath his breath, his eyes came open and he glanced down at his hands.

Kaz tried, for the hundredth time in the past few days to summon his magic, but it was to no avail.

’Escaping the crashing void consumed too much of my magic...it will be a while before I recover.’

’Of all places I could portal to in that moment, I choose here and now I do not have the ability to leave.’ Kaz thought to himself in distaste.

Not having his magic meant many things, but the most pressing meaning was the fact that he could not control or contain the beasts of the black sea.

Now, much like everyone else in Fort Blazed, Kaz had to hope for the continued victory of the dragons, if they were to ever lose a challenge, all life in Fort Blazed, including Kaz would be in danger.

’Fate indeed plays a joke on everyone.’ Kaz grunted again in displeasure,
