Chapter 602: Change in Plans (Ch.603)

The study of Lord Mycroft of Scabbard had settled into an oppressive silence.

Dante stood with his back leaning against the wall watching Estelle pace anxiously as they awaited news from the Scabbard dragons.

Lord Mycroft was also seated at his table, a dark expression on his face. His hands were clasped together and agitation reflected visibly in his eyes.

It took a short moment before there was a knock on the door and Damien Mycroft strode in, accompanied by two Scabbard dragons.

"What news?" Lord Mycroft immediately asked for a report from his son.

Damien spared a glance between his father and his brother before he breathed a sigh.

"The couple have been taken into custody. They returned to Scabbard of their own volition and were captured in the city square, spreading word of the divine healing...from the contagion." Damien revealed with a visible wince.

"And?" Lord Mycroft asked.

"It is true... the human woman is completely healed of the contagion. Multiple physicians have appraised her, none has seen anything like it...all symptoms have disappeared completely and she is in perfectly good health." Damien revealed in astonishment.

"Demevirld, it can only be that." Dante concluded from where he stood.

"This is not good... Neveah cannot reveal what Demevirld truly is. She can neither confirm nor deny involvement in this. But all the rumors will be taken to be true now..." Estelle said in concern.

"It is not as easy as that. No one other than the Dragon kind knew of Demevirld’s existence in these centuries, even amongst us, it was never spoken of and it was kept so for a reason."

"Dragons are not meant to wield magic... revealing that there are those of us who can, will result in turmoil. The contagion, the breaking, everything mysterious that has ever happened with no explanation...she will either bear the blame as the cause or the expectation to solve it all." Lord Mycroft murmured

"How far has word of this spread?" Lord Mycroft asked.

"The entire Scabbard knows of it now and all neighboring forts have received word, it has barely been a few days. I do not know how the news spread so quickly, like someone was intentionally waiting for this moment... for the moment the couple would meet Lady Neveah and the magic within her."

"For the moment when all eyes would be turned with just a single event..." Damien Mycroft said in suspicion.

"Hundreds infected with the contagion request leave from Scabbard to travel to Dune City, even those left untouched believe the only safe place from the Contagion is Dune City... the gates have been shut down and all routes blocked off, but at this rate, I fear we cannot hold them back for long."

"They believe they can live only if they meet the Radiant One...it is complete chaos out in the City, father. And it is the same in Fort Rudder and all forts within travel distance of the White Dunes. To restore order...we might be forced to take extreme measures or risk a riot." Damien revealed.

"But it is also true that Demevirld’s magic can cure the contagion, perhaps save thousands of lives..." Lord Mycroft trailed off.

"Father, not you too. Demevirld cannot be wielded, His Grace made that clear!" Dante prevented Lord Mycroft from going any further down that train of thought.

"This is happening precisely when any further use of Demevirld’s power might render Neveah a slave to his influence for eternity...like the universe is making it impossible for Neveah to be separated from Demevirld." Estelle said in dismay.

"What can be done about this?" Lord Mycroft murmured to himself.

"We must return to our homes! We cannot gather in such masses at this time, it places every one of us in danger." A middle aged man standing on the platform in the city centre tried to pacify the gathered crowd.

The city center of Fort Scabbard was in total pandemonium as the representative of the races tried to calm the increasingly raging crowd, but there was no calming them.

"Open the city gates!" A voice cried out.

"We are not prisoners here! Let us out of the city!" Another voice raged.

The furious voices yelled from different parts of the square, and there was a loud wailing mixed up in the ruckus somewhere.

Up ahead, two dragons flew in a close range, circling the scene and keeping a watchful eye on the pandemonium. They did not approach or interfere, leaving the situation to be handled by the representatives of the races.

Meanwhile, standing off to the side, watching the ruckus was a young man, a ragged looking grey cloak thrown over his shoulder.

He watched the ruckus with a blank expression and just when the pandemonium took a sudden violent turn and the crowd surged forwards with raging cries, a smirk stretched across his lips.

He pushed off the wall where he was leaning. He walked briskly away from the pandemonium, blending into the crowd up until he slipped into an alleyway.

He glanced around to confirm that he had not been noticed and then a wave of his hand summoned an inky black portal.

He crossed it quickly, emerging on the other side. The forest on the outskirts of Fort Scabbard.

Just as he was about to continue on his way, a quiet voice hummed a tune from not far behind him and he paused in his step.

"Hello, Leon." Celeste’s familiar voice greeted, stepping out from the cover of trees.

Leon slowly turned, his brows twitching visibly as he faced Celeste.

"I wondered, just where Azkar’s right hand man would be in these trying times..." Celeste commented with a small smile.

"I have heard of your visits to the Isle of Kezrar Dun in My Lord’s absence." Leon replied calmly, though his expression was dark and deadly.

Celeste studied Leon’s expression for a moment before she broke into laughter.

"With Azkar away indefinitely, someone has to keep the house in order. Would you not agree?" Celeste asked with a smirk.

"Our Lordship has entrusted all affairs to me. Including Azkar’s last orders to you..." Celeste added in a more serious tone.

"And what do you know of my orders?" Leon asked darkly.

"I know Azkar intends to force the wolf girl to bond irrevocably with Our Lordship’s treasure... I also know he wants her alive, for whatever reason..." Celeste murmured.

"But you see, Azkar is no longer here. And my will are your orders now...as such, there will be a slight change of plans." Celeste said, a sinister smile on her lips.

"What do you want?" Leon asked suspiciously.

"The treasure is bound to her soul... and you have mastered Azkar’s soul reaping arts. What use have we of her physical body?" Celeste asked, grinning.

"You mean..." Leon trailed off.

"Lure her out of the safety of Dune City. And that will be the moment you harvest her soul and the treasure along with it... and then kill her." Celeste made clear.

Leon’s brows twitched slightly but he nodded once, lowering his head to a bow.
