Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 593: Selfless or Not ()
Dante sighed quietly as he pondered over how exactly he could put his thoughts into words, especially when communicating with his father who could be intentionally difficult.
"I just...Elle is dependent on me. She has always been and I fear I am equally as dependent on her..." Dante begun.
"And you believe it might not truly be love you both share, but companionship?" Lord Mycroft surmised.
Dante shook his head slightly, he did not have doubts about his own feelings. This past year had made him more clear about them than he had ever been.
"I know how I feel about Elle, I have always known. She is the only reason I survived the severing, I was the lucky one, my heart already sheltered someone else..."
"She is the only reason I get by each day even when that ripping feeling in my heart just will not dissipate."
"What would Elle do without me? How devastated would she be if I left in that manner? Would she hate me? Would she stumble and fall in her usual clumsy way too many times if I am no longer here?" Dante chuckled quietly to himself.
"Somehow, my dragon side is convinced we have to live for Elle... For me, it can only be Elle, there could never be anyone else. But it is not the same for her. The true bond, we do not have that and Elle knows it... I know it, it is a fact that cannot be changed..." Dante trailed off again, pondering in silence.
"Dante...are you...?" Lord Mycroft asked uncertainly.
"Yes father. I am scared... terrified of what would happen if I let this go any further...if I begin the merging and then it all goes wrong. I cannot put Estelle through that, I cannot go through that..." Dante admitted.
"Why would you even harbor such thoughts?" Lord Mycroft asked in bafflement.
"Elle has been sheltered all her life, she never truly had the opportunity to explore, to get to know the world and discover herself... and in this past year, I have been the one doing the sheltering in Lord Starron’s stead." Dante continued.
"Elle is light blood. Out in the world somewhere, there might just be a Lord Dragon to whom she is truly bonded... I cannot shake off the constant thought that I am grasping onto straws..."
"That everything would slip through my fingers in the blink of an eye, and if so, shall I tie her to me for good knowing this? Would it be right of me to do so? Neveah and Lord Menarx were the most enviable pair... and I saw it all come crashing down in the light of a true bond." Dante murmured.
"You are not Lord Menarx, son. And Elle definitely is not Lady Neveah... that one scenario should not be a measure for all chosen bonds." Lord Mycroft chided his son.
"How many light bloods did not end up bonded to a Lord Dragon?" Dante asked directly.
Lord Mycroft thought over it for a moment before he slowly shook his head.
"Light Bloods may not be dragons, but they are birthed with the blood of flames. The only worthy mate to a light blood is a Lord Dragon, this is just the way the Creator has made it." Dante said in a melancholic tone.
"For one as precious as Elle, I fear there is a right one in her future... far more right than I could ever be. Mine was taken from me before I could even know her, this is my lot...it is my pain to bear alone."
"It does not justify taking away from another. If such a day comes, letting go will be excruciating ...but holding on will be doing her a great wrong. Was that not why Neveah chose to let go?" Dante said in a pained tone.
Lord Mycroft stared at his son for a long moment, saying nothing. And then he finally spoke.
"I know I raised you right, but how did you become such a good young man?" Lord Mycroft asked in bafflement.
"Dante, listen to me. Our kind dwindles in numbers with each century, it is a slow process but sure and despite the fact that we do not wish to confront it, it is a reality we must face, do you know why it is so?" Lord Mycroft asked Dante.
"It is difficult for dragons to sire an heir. And child births of dragon offspring are even more difficult, especially a male child." Dante replied, unsure of what his father’s words had to do with the topic of conversation.
"There is a third reason... the true bond amongst our kind is the most difficult to discover of all species. One may live across the street from your bonded for centuries and never know till a skin to scale contact..."
"This means that the number of dragons without riders is far greater than those who are bonded. The reality remains, most of these dragons may never find their true bond... and for those of us who do, we are amongst the lucky ones." Lord Mycroft said clearly.
"What is worse, by dragon nature, finding one compatible enough for a chosen bond is still a difficult endeavor. Hence with each passing century, there are less bonds, less procreation...less of our kind." Lord Mycroft said.
"I know this father." Dante said with a sigh.
"Then do you also realize that if you were to let go of Estelle now due to your fears, and in the next three centuries, her true bond remains undiscovered... Elle will begin to age, and will eventually die?" Lord Mycroft asked.
Dante winced visibly at Lord Mycroft’s words.
"Lady Neveah sounds like a strong woman, and I commend her selflessness...but you my son, you are allowed to be selfish...you have earned that much." Lord Mycroft made clear.
"Life is not assured... for any of us, Dante. Now, is all you are sure of having, and now is what truly matters. The chosen bond faces many challenges...you must trust Elle, and her love for you. Because if you do not, you both are already lost." Lord Mycroft said.
