Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 57: Rogues ()
The moon rose high in the sky, it’s rays lighting the path for the small traveling party making the return trip to the Eclipse Hunt Pack.
It had already been a full day since the Eclipse Hunt departed the Eclipse Palace at dawn and after hours of traveling through the roads, they had finally gone past the human settlement.
They had still travelled for a short while longer, through a path leading through the woods but now the darkness of the night blanketed the sky and though the wolf shifters could still see just fine in the dark, the horses were not as gifted.
The carriage Neveah sat within came to a halt and Neveah poked her head out to peer through the window.
Alpha Dane who led the party at the very front came to a stop, turning his large wolf head to the side, he nodded towards the cover of trees. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"Dane is calling for a rest stop, we will resume our travel at dawn." Luna Colleen explained from where she sat across from Neveah.
Amongst the party, everyone travelled in their wolf form which made the trip much easier, however for the benefit of Luna Colleen and Neveah who could not shift, a horse driven carriage was provided.
Due to the carriage, the traveling pace of the Eclipse Hunt wolves had been reduced by almost a half and what should have been a four day travel on paws would now take seven days.
Neveah had tried assuring them there was no need to provide a carriage for her benefit but Luna Colleen had insisted on it, explaining to Neveah that she had also used a carriage on the trip to Eclipse Fang.
Luna Colleen’s condition did not allow for her to take her wolf form or be involved in any form of rigorous activity whatsoever and the pack understood this.
Neveah had only set aside her reluctance to ride in a carriage with Luna Colleen’s assurance that the Eclipse Hunt wolves were not being dragged behind schedule for her sake alone.
In any case, there was no hurry. Seven days was already good time and the Eclipse Hunt Pack would be just fine since the Alpha and Luna were originally meant to be gone for a month.
They were only returning this soon because Neveah had been able to stop the trip to Mount Vernon from ever happening.
"I see, I will step out for some air then." Neveah said to Luna Colleen, heading out of the carriage, she stepped down to the ground, taking a deep breath in before exhaling slowly.
Neveah was not sure if it was just her, but the farther from the Eclipse Fang they got, the air felt much more refreshing and every breath was easier than it used to be.
A quiet chuckle escaped her lips as she moved slowly towards the forest line, she kept her distance from the activities of the Eclipse Hunt since she knew clearly that they were wary of her.
The Eclipse Hunt wolves were justified in being suspicious of her and Neveah did not wish to overstep, eventually, she knew they would come to understand that she was nothing like the other royals.
For the time being, she was okay with the reluctant respect they accorded her, to them, she was just someone whose help they needed to ensure the safety of their pregnant Luna.
However Neveah could see it clearly in their eyes that they did not trust her at all but only kept their opinions to themselves for Luna Colleen’s benefit.
It did not matter, Neveah did not plan to linger in the Eclipse Hunt Pack either, there was no need to build unnecessary associations.
Neveah heard footsteps approaching her but she kept her gaze fixed ahead as though she did not hear it, a human was not meant to have overly sensitive senses.
"Here." A gruff voice said and Neveah turned around to see Vincent standing behind her, extending a fur cloak in his hand.
His expression was scrunched up into a frown clearly displeased at having to speak with Neveah.
"Leen asked me to bring you your coat, Princess. The winds are chilly and humans catch a cold easily, it will be best you don’t fall sick and delay our trip any further." Vincent explained in a tone of displeasure.
Although Vincent’s words were harsh and unfriendly, Neveah had been on the receiving end of his wary personality once before and so she was not bothered by it.
"Thank you." Neveah said as she accepted the coat and pulled it over her shoulders,
"Gratitude is unnecessary, I am only acting on my sister’s orders." Vincent murmured as he headed away and Neveah returned her attention back to staring ahead into the woods.
Neveah remained in that position for a while before Luna Colleen called out to her and she returned to the carriage.
________________
Four days soon passed by uneventfully and they were completely out of Eclipse Fang territory and getting closer to the Eclipse Hunt Pack,
With two days left out of their trip, Neveah was beginning to feel a small sense of relief. She had half expected Lado would give chase and order her back to the Eclipse Fang at any moment.
But coming this far, it seemed her father had truly let her go this time, though it was only meant to be a temporary arrangement.
For the past four days, though the Eclipse Hunt wolves still had not warmed up to her, Luna Colleen’s company had been more than sufficient.
Neveah had not begun the process of neutralizing the poison yet but she kept a close eye on Luna Colleen’s condition to ensure there would be no complications once they arrived at Eclipse Hunt Pack.
Luna Colleen had been extremely doting and cared for all of Neveah’s affairs and Neveah felt guilty seeing Luna Colleen trying to make it up to Neveah for the cold shoulder she received from the rest of the Eclipse Hunt wolves.
Neveah was not certain how to break it to Luna Colleen that she didn’t really mind the treatment of the Eclipse Hunt wolves, she was already satisfied just being away from Eclipse Fang.
"Veah?" Luna Colleen called out to Neveah from where she sat with Alpha Dane, his Beta, Vincent and Dechlan beside the carriage.
Neveah pushed off from where she leaned against the tree, heading over to Luna Colleen.
"You always keep to yourself, don’t you get tired of being by yourself?" Luna Colleen reprimanded as she gestured for Neveah to take a sit beside her.
Neveah glanced around the circle knowing over a half of them did not want her sitting there, she then took a seat reluctantly.
"The Princess has a reserved personality, do not burden her Leen." Alpha Dane said with a small smile.
"Yes, I agree. She seems to prefer her own company to that of others." Dechlan agreed and Luna Colleen scoffed audibly, handing Neveah a slice of milk bread.
Neveah accepted it and bit into it, eating quietly as they continued arguing over Neveah’s personality,
While Luna Colleen insisted Neveah was a warm ray of sunshine, Dechlan was adamant in his opinion that she was as cold as a block of ice, Vincent’s opinion was simply that Neveah was not worth arguing over,
Whilst Alpha Dane and his Beta watched the spectacle in amusement.
Neveah did not mind the fact that she was the topic of their conversation, she would not be the one to speak of her own personality, besides it did not truly matter what they thought of her.
However, Neveah’s attention was drawn when she heard the distant sound of a twig snap from somewhere within the woods.
Neveah frowned slightly as she lifted her gaze up and stared in that direction, her brows scrunching up in confusion,
Neveah did not have to ponder over it alone because in a moment, Alpha Dane seemed to have noticed something was off as his facial expression changed.
"Someone’s here..." Alpha Dane murmured, his words sending the entire clearing into complete silence as they slowly rose up to their feet.
Alpha Dane stared in the direction where Neveah had picked up on the snapping of twigs, his gaze narrowed into a deep frown.
They had set camp a short distance from the main road and though these roads were travelled frequently, it was unlikely there would be any ordinary person lurking in the woods.
The woods this far from Eclipse Fang Pack was considered dangerous terrain and Neveah was certain whatever was lurking out in the woods was something dangerous.
Another twig snapped and this time the sound was audible to the entire party.
"Vincent, Dechlan... protect Leen and Veah." Alpha Dane said in a low tone as a distant growl echoed across the woods.
"Rogues?" Luna Colleen asked Alpha Dane in an apprehensive tone as Vincent took her hand and guided her backwards slowly whilst Dechlan moved closer to Neveah.
"Rogues." Alpha Dane affirmed grimly.
