Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 554: Disguise ()
The innkeeper moved on ahead to speak with a few others dressed in similar robes to his.
Neveah kept her gaze fixed ahead but she tuned her hearing to pick up their words.
"That is Sir Blackbird?" One of the other innkeepers asked in doubt, sneaking a subtle glance at Neveah.
"It is his signature attire. Plus he never reveals his true face, it is impossible to confirm." The innkeeper who had received them replied.
"We can only pass on the orders we have received. If executed properly, we will then know for certain if it is Sir Blackbird. If not, the mission would claim the impostors life anyways." A third innkeeper said.
"Plus we have those here who will keep an eye out." The innkeeper added, glancing around the hall.
Amongst the people seated at the tables, Neveah could pick out a few who stood out, looking particularly suspicious.
They were clearly Fae but dressed like merchants with their wings hidden away in large silk robes.
’Mission? What exactly do they have planned?’ Neveah wondered.
"Why are there so many of them posing as humans? There is no law against the Fae here in Dune City." Tara whispered to Neveah in hushed tones.
Neveah glanced over at Tara shaking her head slightly so Tara refrained from saying more.
The innkeeper and his colleagues exchanged a few more words and then he returned to Neveah.
"I will take you up to your room first, water for your bath and your meal will be served shortly after." The innkeeper relayed to Neveah.
"Hmm." Was all the response Neveah gave.
Neveah knew it was probably for the best she spoke as seldom as possible, her voice was the surest thing that would give her away, she was certain she already sounded suspicious.
The innkeeper lead the way up to the top level and Neveah and Tara followed after him.
He lead them through a hallway till he arrived at a door which he opened and then stepped to the side, gesturing for Neveah and Tara to go in.
"The servants will come up to you soon, in the meantime, do get settled in." The innkeeper said.
Neveah nodded once and the innkeeper took his leave, shutting the door.
Tara opened her mouth to speak but Neveah held a finger up to her lips, shaking her head slightly.
She pointed at the door and then gestured to her ears, indicating that she could tell the innkeeper had only retreated a few steps back to give the illusion of leaving but he had not left.
Neveah could see the staff at the waterfall inn did not completely buy into her deception, but they could not make certain because it seemed this Blackbird was a man they did not understand completely and did not wish to offend.
If they pushed Neveah and she actually turned out to be the true Sir Blackbird, they could not deal with the consequences.
Neveah could not help but wonder just what kind of person this Sir Blackbird was to make the people at waterfall inn so wary of him.
Even those seated at the tables in the hall on the lower level had gone awfully quiet the moment Neveah had stepped in, swaddled in her disguise.
Neveah was beginning to suspect she had made the wrong move playing as this Blackbird but there was already no going back.
Neveah waited for a short time until she heard the innkeeper give up on his attempts to eavesdrop, his footsteps retreating away.
When Neveah was certain it was clear, Neveah walked over to take a sit at the small wooden table.
"What now?" Tara asked, watching Neveah.
"Now, we wait." Neveah said, tracing the lines engraved on the sheath of her sword as she tried to figure out the situation.
It was only a short moment before there was a knock on the door.
Neveah nodded to Tara so she would get the door.
Tara walked over to the door and opened it, a young maid walked in, carrying a bucket of steaming water.
"Sir, I have brought the water for your bath." The young maid relayed politely.
Neveah and Tara exchanged a look, Neveah subtly nodded to Tara, the young maid did not take notice of the exchange and only waited for instructions.
"Take it over to the washroom. I will prepare his bath." Tara directed, walking away with the maid.
Neveah waited for a short moment before Tara reemerged, holding a bundle of clothing that belonged to the maid on one hand and the empty bucket the maid had used to bring in the water.
"By this..." Tara began, imitating the gesture Neveah had made with her eyes.
"You didn’t mean I should kill her, did you?" Tara asked Neveah to be sure.
Neveah passed Tara a nasty glare, she somehow still found a way to make jokes even in the situation they were in.
"Of course not. Change into this and give me that. I will go out and take a look." Neveah said,
She went around the room, pulling down the curtains and then she shrugged off the excess robes till she was only left in her black inner robe.
Neveah handed the disguise to Tara and changed into the maid’s attire.
"Sit." Tara instructed.
Pulling out a small bag that carried some of her tools, Tara made quick work of Neveah’s face, switching the false beard and everything else that made her appear manly.
She wiped Neveah’s face with a damp towel and then made some changes that made her appear as similar to the maid as possible.
"It was a good thing we dyed your hair black, you would have stood out no matter what, with that hair of yours." Tara said thoughtfully, nodding in satisfaction with her work.
"Change into that." Neveah reminded Tara to put on Sir Blackbird’s attire.
"Why do I have to?" Tara grumbled.
"Because the maid has to be you and there needs to be a Sir Blackbird when anyone else comes by. Move her to the bed or something, whatever you do... please don’t kill anyone." Neveah pleaded earnestly.
Tara did not respond and Neveah sighed in exasperation.
"The night is young, we have only a few hours till we have to leave. I will go take a look around and see what I can find. I trust you can handle things here?" Neveah asked.
"I will be fine." Tara assured.
Neveah nodded, patting down the maid’s dress, she headed out.
