Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 443: If You Don’t, Neither Will I ()
Neveah stared up at the waterfall, it cascaded down to a gently flowing stream that stretched on and disappeared into the forest ahead.
It was a picturesque view, simple yet enchanting. Neveah had never known there was such a beautiful place in the back mountain of Dragon Keep.
The mountains surrounding Dragon Keep were vast but the mountain that was dragon keep itself was the largest and hid many sights that would take many long years to fully explore.
"Many long years..." Neveah murmured to herself.
At some point, if only for a little while, she had been able to see a future here in dragon keep. Bright and clear, filled with so much promise.
But now, that vision was hazy and Neveah was no longer sure of as much as the day following this, not to mention the future.
Now, she had been sitting here for a period of time she was not even sure of, watching the waterfall as time passed by all around her without her taking note of it.
"The Keep is an uproar, the Lady Neveah disappeared. Yet here sits the said Lady Neveah." The familiar voice of King Jian drew Neveah out of her thoughts.
Neveah glanced over her shoulder to find King Jian stood by the tree line, he was leaned against a tree, his arms crossed over his chest as he watched her in silence.
There was a complicated expression on his face, the look in his eyes impossible to decipher as always.
Neveah was not sure for how long he had been there, her mind was so clouded that she could not have noticed him if he did not make himself known.
Neveah did not believe the Dragon King had come out especially to look for her and so she could not begin to guess as to why the Dragon King was out here, other than the fact that the entire mountain was his territory.
"If one cannot be found, it is common sense to assume they do not wish to be." Neveah murmured in response, returning her attention to staring at the waterfall.
King Jian said nothing in response, but Neveah heard his footsteps approach and she frowned slightly when he took a seat some distance away from her, his gaze also fixed on the waterfall.
"I believe I have just said I wish to be alone...Your Grace." Neveah asserted, passing a look to King Jian.
"As do I." King Jian replied blankly, his gaze still fixed ahead of him.
Neveah had no words to counter him, she had noticed this part of the mountain was warded off and she had already guessed it was the Dragon King’s place, a part of the mountain only he could freely access.
She had come here precisely because she knew this would be the last place anyone would come out in search of her, especially Menarx who knew just how much she detested King Jian.
Neveah said nothing more, neither did King Jian. The silence was neither comfortable, nor awkward, it was just the kind where both were lost in their own thoughts.
"By my order, the unified council will hold on the morrow. The rider council is also in agreement, affairs of the empire cannot be jeopardized. The situation of the dwarf king aside, we can tell what else would be discussed. Even then, it cannot be avoided for much longer." King Jian finally broke the silence.
"The King does what he must, I am well aware of this. For what purpose do you tell me of it?" Neveah asked with a shrug.
"You will have to take a stand...oversee the unified council. Are you able to move forward as planned?" King Jian asked.
Neveah raised a brow, passing a look over to the Dragon King.
"Why? You worry I will not do a good enough job as representative of Dragon dynasty? Do you suppose I might throw another tantrum?" Neveah asked.
"Do not make this into what it is not, Neveah." King Jian replied blankly.
"What is it then, Your Grace?" Neveah asked.
"Every race has it out for the Dragon dynasty. We are at the center of the power tussle in this realm... this time, you will get caught up in between." King Jian said after a moment of quiet.
Neveah understood King Jian’s meaning, she now had enough that could be used against her when she faced the council... even her status would be questioned.
"Your Grace need not be concerned for me."
"I have never had it easy. I do not expect to either. Rest assured, the unified council will go as you wish... I will make it so." Neveah replied.
Rising up to her feet, Neveah strode away, leaving the Dragon King to himself.
She headed back to the keep, following Menarx’s scent trail, it did not take long to find Menarx who was already headed in Neveah’s direction.
Neveah and Menarx both arrived to a clearing from opposite sides, their eyes met and Neveah stopped, unwilling to cover the distance between them.
The look in Menarx’s eyes was a blend of apprehension and relief as he walked slowly over to Neveah.
"I couldn’t find you... you had me worried." Menarx broke the silence when he was just an inch away from Neveah.
His eyes scanned her form, checking for any injuries. When he was satisfied with his scan, Menarx pulled Neveah into his arms, hugging her tightly to himself,
Neveah did not return his hug, her hands limp by her side but Menarx only held her closer, his familiar warmth engulfing her and his scent overwhelming her sensitive senses.
"Love...tell me we can get through this. I was born and raised a lord, I have known no other life. I have never been scared of anything in my life... I do not know how to fear. But right now... I am scared, scared you will let go of my hand." Menarx whispered quietly.
Neveah’s eyes went closed, she had told herself she would not show weakness, she would not show how deeply affected she was by what had happened but with Menarx’s familiar voice and the warmth of his arms, her resolve cracked.
A quiet sob crept out of Neveah’s throat but she quickly bit down on her lip, preventing any further slip.
"Can you...can you get through this?...If she dies... the severing... I..." Neveah stuttered out, her thoughts all jumbled up as she tried to put them in words.
"I have you, Neveah. I have what other dragons who have endured the severing do not have... I have a woman I love with all that I am. I ask you to trust me... trust in my love for you." Menarx’s plea was quiet but firm.
"I do trust you... Narx. If you do not let go, neither will I." Neveah finally said, her hands moving to rest on Menarx’s back.
