Chapter 437: Nothing Right (Ch.438)

"May your bond be blessed and fruitful, Lady Neveah." Came another greeting.

Neveah could have sworn, this was already the thousandth time she had heard this and as overwhelming as the acceptance she was receiving was, Neveah longed for an end to the ceremony.

She had used up every ounce of social grace in her body and her cheeks ached from holding a polite smile for so long, yet there was no end to the guests.

Infact, they had not even gone halfway through them. The unified council was still waiting to present their gift, after the rider council had bid their congratulations one after the other, it was now time for the nobles, guilds and academies.

There were so many notable personalities in each of these organizations, when would she ever be done with this?

The piece played by the minstrels was practically the only thing Neveah still found soothing. Neveah was not certain what tune it was, but it carried with it a calming aura, every note perfectly harmonized.

And the enchanting shadow dance that was displayed behind a large screen in the hall kept the guests entertained.

"This is an Ixora bloom, a rare treasure of the Fae royal forest." The young noble lord who had come up to Neveah said, presenting a stunningly beautiful flower held in a glass case.

The flower was beautiful, strikingly so, and Neveah did not doubt it was something rare but at this point, she had already received hundreds of rare gifts, all she had the energy to do was smile, express her thanks and pass it on to the attendants behind her who would ensure the gifts were placed away safely.

"Your kind gesture is much appreciated. I will be sure to treasure it." Neveah replied with a small smile as she reached out to accept the gift.

She gently held the glass case and was just about passing it on to the attendant when the man who had presented the gift stopped Neveah.

"If it is not too much of a bother, would My Lady take a closer look at the bloom? It is in it’s early stages and was harvested just in time to be fully appreciated." The man suggested with a warm smile.

Neveah raised a brow, glancing down at the glass case. She could already see the flower quite well through the glass and was in agreement to it’s astonishing beauty, what else did she need to see?

"Just a quick look, the scent still has traces of the morning dew on it." The man added when Neveah simply raised a brow.

Neveah breathed an inaudible sigh, all she wanted was to be done with all of this. Menarx was away somewhere in the hall, engaging some other guests and she alone had to deal with all of this.

Neveah would much rather have just passed the case on, but she did not wish to give the misconception that she did not appreciate the gift.

"Very well." Neveah agreed.

Neveah reached for the lid of the glass case and lifted it open, glancing down at the flower with a curious look.

"What do you think?" The man asked.

Neveah furrowed her brows slightly, the scent emanated by the flower was undoubtedly new and refreshing,

It was unlike any scent Neveah had ever had the pleasure of appreciating and unconsciously, Neveah leaned down closer to get a more distinct opinion of it before providing a response.

Just as Neveah leaned down, there was a shout of exclamation from somewhere in the hall.

"Intruder!" A voice exclaimed.

Before Neveah could even react, the glass case containing the flower was knocked out of her hand, crashing down to the ground where it shattered to dozens of pieces.

Neveah found herself pulled out of the way of the flying glass shards, her head making contact with a warm chest and a familiar scent.

A deadly growl rumbled out of him and Neveah could practically feel his rage charging up the atmosphere in the grand hall.

"Menarx." Neveah murmured, but she did not have the time to ponder over his arrival.

In the next moment, a group of dragon guards tackled down the woman who had rushed up to Neveah.

"It’s poison! It’s poison! Arrest him!" She cried out.

It was only then Neveah recognised the voice, she pulled away from Menarx’s hold, staring over at Adrienne in complete astonishment.

"You have to believe me! It’s poison!" Adrienne insisted.

"I have no idea what she is talking about! Is this not the banished fairy?! You cannot believe a word she says!" The man who had presented the flower was quick to defend.

Neveah’s gaze furrowed slightly, she could see in Adrienne’s wide and desperate eyes that there was not an ounce of dishonesty.

However the eyes of the man darted around, and Neveah could decipher he was scouting a route of escape.

"Do as she says." Neveah ordered the dragon guards.

Just then, the man made a swift dash for the exit but was apprehended but his path was blocked by a very displeased looking Xenon.

Neveah returned her attention to Adrienne, crouching down so she was on level with the kneeling fairy.

"Unhand her." Neveah instructed the dragon guards.

The dragon guards complied but did not move away.

"How are you here, Adrienne? And we both know you do not like me, so even if your accusation is true, why would you save me?" Neveah asked with a raised brow.

However, Adrienne’s attention was not fixed on Neveah at all. Neveah trailed her gaze and found it was fixed on a particularly large shard of the glass case.

It was not the first time Adrienne would come up with such a means to escape having to explain her actions, it was only that this time...it was not Davina’s life she intended to end.

Adrienne lunged for the shard, but Neveah was faster, her hand shot out, grabbing Adrienne’s wrist and pulling her across the floor so she stared directly in her eyes.

"Do not even think..." Neveah began to say but was cut off by something completely unexpected.

In Adrienne’s struggle to free herself, her free hand grasped for Neveah and grazed over Neveah’s chest and in that moment, an electrifying jolt shot across Neveah’s veins, originating from the spot Adrienne’s skin had made contact with.

It was not a warm, soothing jolt, far from it...it was a bitter and agonizingly painful jolt that shook Neveah to the very core, completely cutting off her breath and overturning her system.

Neveah gasped, her hand shooting up to her chest as she doubled over, coughing up a mouthful of blood.

The grand hall broke into pandemonium and confusion... Everyone now believed in the poison Adrienne spoke of.

Everyone except those close enough to Neveah to catch the fierce, angry glow from beneath her dress as Menarx’s scale awakened in recognition...in recognition of another.

Neveah’s horrified gaze moved between Adrienne and then to an equally horrified Menarx as she gasped for breath.

From his wide eyes, Neveah could tell he had also sensed what she had...

After centuries of waiting, Menarx had never found his soul bond...but Neveah had just found it for him, and amongst millions of people in the world, it was this woman across from her.

It was today of all days, a day that marked Neveah’s nineteenth summer...

It was the day she had grown up loathing, wishing more times than not that she had ever been born.

Neveah could heard Menarx’s distant cries of panic as blood trailed out from her nose and eyes, she had the same thought once more...

’Why had she even been born?’

Nothing ever went right on this day, why had Neveah ever dared to think today would be any different?
