Omega's Rebirth-Chapter 387: Eavesdropping ()
"You do not have to go with me. I am not stirring any trouble, I’m just going over to check on my daughter." Kaideon said, passing Jian an annoyed glare as they stood in the ascending room.
Jian had tried time and time again to convince Kaideon that Neveah was in good hands and he could just go see her the next day rather than at such a late hour but Kaideon was adamant.
"I see the tension between you and Menarx clearly. " Jian began, glancing over at Kaideon with a pointed look.
"So no, from where I’m standing, I find that half hearted assurance of yours really hard to believe, especially considering how well I know you Kaideon."
"So regardless of if you intend to stir trouble or not, I do not trust to have you and Menarx alone and unsupervised for even a moment... I would rather have my keep remain in one piece." Jian replied in a deadpan tone.
"Watching me like a hawk in this manner will not stop me from taking a swing at Menarx if I am moved to. Ultimately, you will only end up dragged into it. " Kaideon said for clarity.
"Kaideon, just check in on her and we’ll be on our way. It’s is not that hard to just play nice, is it?" Jian asked in exasperation.
"It is." Kaideon replied directly, he was not even in the mood to sugarcoat his words.
And perhaps it was really for the better that Jian was going with him seeing as Kaideon and Menarx never did finish up that conversation of theirs.
Jian and Kaideon walked the rest of the way in silence till they arrived at the door to Menarx’s room and Kaideon was just about knocking when some words from a trembling tone that was clearly Neveah’s stopped him in his tracks.

"I keep slipping it up...he was hardly a father to me, it’s a title he never even deserved and I loathed calling him that so why do I keep saying it wrong?" Neveah murmured.
"Veah, love...do not force it. Take it easy on yourself, it will take time to grow accustomed to. It’s all you’ve known for nineteen years." Menarx comforted quietly.
"I am confused...upset, I have so many questions and no answers...but somewhere deep down, I guess I always knew... that he wasn’t... couldn’t be my father."
"But now that the truth is staring me right in my face, I have no idea what I am to do with it." Neveah continued, breaking into quiet sobs that echoed out to where Jian and Kaideon stood.
What was more heart wrenching, what Neveah had said or the thick emotions in her tone...it was hard to decide.
Kaideon’s mind reeled, a mixture of rage, despair and a host of other emotions crawling up on him all at once.
After a short while of standing outside the door, Kaideon and Jian had both overhead what they both knew they were not meant to have heard... perhaps not ever.
A glimpse into Neveah’s life in the Eclipse Domain that no one, not even Jian could have imagined... that such darkness had just been lurking behind her cold eyes.
Kaideon’s hands were clenched into tight fists, his form visibly shaking with rage and Jian just stared warily at Kaideon.
It was bad enough that they had unintentionally eavesdropped on perhaps the most fragile moment of Neveah who Jian recalled clearly, still hated him.
What was worse was the fact that the object of Kaideon’s rage was halfway across the world and all the fury that was gathering up in him at this moment would not have an outlet.
"Kaideon, you..." Jian began but trailed off, uncertain of what it was he could say to Kaideon after all they had just heard.
Jian could not even to begin to imagine how Kaideon felt at the moment when even he himself was not entirely unaffected by it...he was far from unaffected by it.
The words he had just heard still sat heavily in his mind and Jian was yet to fully process them, but if there was one thing he did know, it was the fact that Neveah already had who she needed for this fragile moment.
It was almost a year since she arrived dragon keep and Jian had heard not even a single word about her past from any source whatsoever, it was easy to understand why it was not an easy topic to talk about.
The only reason Neveah had opened up in the first place was because Menarx was in that room with her and Jian understood that if Neveah found out that her audience had been more than just Menarx, things would not play out well enough for anyone.
There were not many things Jian was willing to admit to but he did know very clearly that this was overstepping and as shocking as Neveah’s words were,
An unavoidable feeling of guilt had begun to churn somewhere within him.
"Kaideon... I think we had best just leave." Jian murmured to Kaideon who still stood frozen in place.
"You...stay out." Kaideon said to Jian and made to head into the room but Jian caught him by the shoulder and pulled him backwards.
"I do not believe what the girl needs right now is you going in there raging... you’ve been her father for what? A day?"
"Your daughter and I never see eye to eye on anything and we never will, but if there is one thing I know about her, it is the fact that she is strong and prideful."
"And she has held her head up high with no trouble for as long as I’ve known her...a little too high, even."
" If only for her sake, we should forget we were ever here." Jian said in a blank but firm tone.
Jian did not wait around, pulling Kaideon along with him so they headed back the way they had come.
