Chapter 380: What Is Meant To Be (Ch.380)

’I do not appreciate his tone.’ Terran thought to Alessio in agitation.

Terran had always been easily irritable, it was no surprise he already wanted the warlock’s head.

’We need his expertise, stay calm.’ Alessio thought back to his wolf before he returned his attention to the warlock.

"A rogue warlock." Alessio reminded Karan, his calm expression concealing his displeasure.

Just like there were rogue wolves, there were witches and warlocks who had been exiled from their clans and Karan was one of such.

"Yet the only one you saw fit to ask a favor from." Karan replied, placing emphasis on the word favor.

"Why? You can overthrow your father’s dynasty but you do not have the confidence to command your father’s raven guards?" Karan taunted.

"The raven guards are mercenaries, bought by the highest gold. This requires complete discretion, it cannot be helped." Alessio replied as he walked over to Karan.

"This woman must truly be something, to have you expend so much effort to bring me here and keep my presence hidden. "

"So what exactly is she to you then? A long lost lover perhaps..." Karan commented.

"Your curiosity might just get you killed, so nip it. Now, if you have something for me, now is the time to say it. Otherwise, I would not mind showing you the way back to the dungeons." Alessio clarified.

Karan chuckled quietly but he complied with Alessio’s demand.

"Here’s the thing, I will require a lot more time to be able to provide you all the answers you seek, Alessio."

"This is a situation more complicated than what it looks like, I must admit I have never seen anything quite like it."

"But I will give you an answer to the question you asked me the very first time you brought me here." Karan said.

"Is it magic?...Yes, whatever spell has kept her preserved like this, it is a very powerful and ancient spell. Amongst the witches capable of casting such a spell, there are only few in existence." Karan relayed.

"She is dead then?" Alessio asked.

"It is not as simple as that." Karan replied with a sigh, turning back to face the woman laid on the platform.

"How is it not simple? Is she dead? That is the most important factor here, is it not?" Alessio insisted.

"Fine, you want an answer? She is dead." Karan replied casually.

Alessio sucked in a sharp breath, he had already expected that but he had hoped that perhaps there would be a different answer.

’Dead or alive, she will still serve our purpose.’ Terran thought to Alessio and Alessio nodded in agreement.

This woman Eira was of great value even in death, there were far too many people that mattered connected to her.

Discovering her existence had made so many things much easier for Alessio now.

"However, like I said, it is much more complicated than that." Karan added.

"What is that to mean?" Alessio asked.

"There is no life force, so it is no doubt that she did die. But I can sense her soul is still within this body." Karan revealed.

"She died and her soul is still within her body, how does that even work?" Alessio asked in bafflement.

"I also do not understand it completely, but someone must have desperately wanted to save her life. Her soul is locked within her body with a powerful spell...it is why she appears to be alive and preserved." Karan explained it better.

Alessio frowned slightly, he could already guess who that someone was... what Alessio could not tell was if his father had played a part in Eira’s death in the first place.

Alessio would never place it beyond his father to kill her out of spite and then turn around to preserve her body in this manner so he might delude himself that she still lived and was by his side.

The sheer depravity of it sent a shudder of disgust down Alessio’s spine and that was saying a lot considering Alessio himself did not stand on a high moral pedestal either.

"Can she be saved?" Alessio asked.

Karan did not respond immediately but finally, he shook his head.

"First, I will need to understand just what kind of spell was cast on her, by who and how to undo the spell...but I must say this, undoing the spell will not necessarily save her life."

"Undoing the spell will release the bind on her soul and remember this was a bind placed after she died. I really do not know if undoing the spell would mean life...or true death." Karan admitted honestly.

"And there is no method to determine what the outcome could be?" Alessio asked to be sure.

"None that I know of. I am a worthy warlock in my own right, but truly spells that transcend the barrier of life and death are beyond my expertise." Karan replied with a shake of his head.

"Hence you must decide if you wish to attempt saving this woman...or you would rather not take the risk, that is the question now." Karan added.

Alessio frowned slightly as he pondered over it for a moment before he shook his head.

"I will be crowned on the morrow, the coronation and solidifying my power in the Eclipse Domain is more important."

"The woman is a very important factor to my endeavours, I will give it much thought after the urgent matters are settled." Alessio decided.

"That is to say you have no further use for me and will send me back to the dungeons?" Karan asked, crossing his arms over his chest.

"No, there is more." Alessio murmured.

Alessio rolled up his sleeve and stretched his arm to Karan, revealing the small glowing mark on his wrist.

"You assured me it would be a one time thing when I cast that spell." Karan reminded.

"I lied." Alessio replied blankly.

"To manipulate the mate bond with magic to strengthen it will put you and your mate through excruciating pain!" Karan hissed.

"Pain is good...pain is a reminder that what is meant to be must be." Alessio replied with a smirk.
