Chapter 363: A Still Stream (Ch.363)

"Lady Neveah, are you sure about this? Your safety is of great importance and I do not dare compromise it."

"If anything, leave the storm singers to me. You need not get involved any further. The directions you have provided will suffice." Eidon still debated Neveah’s decision.

"Splitting ways will be faster and more effective than you would take down all five by yourself and you know this."

"I understand your concern for me, Eidon. But this is more important than my safety at this time." Neveah insisted as she rose to her feet.

"Menarx would not agree." Eidon replied blankly.

Neveah had no words to counter that, but she would not give in on this one.

If the storm singers were not taken care of in time, even Menarx would possibly be in danger.

If she was truly to be a rider on the king’s guard, Neveah knew she would have to make the dragon lords understand that there was a difference between a princess and a rider to a battle dragon.

While one would only ever require protection, the other was duty bound to always be in the direct line of danger.

"Eidon, I will not sit here and do nothing because you feel that would be safer for me."

"If I understand correctly, you are duty bound to honor my orders, we split ways here and take down the storm singers in our respective paths... this is not a request." Neveah clarified firmly.

Neveah was not certain if that would be enough to convince Eidon but it surely was worth a shot.

"Very well." Eidon said, lowering his head to a slight bow.

"Dante, I will leave the Lady of Ruby scales under your protection."

"I have the coordinates, I will return as soon as I can. Danger lurks at every edge of this forest, you will need to be extra cautious." Eidon said to Dante.

"I understand." Dante replied with a nod.

"In the meantime, you are not accustomed to this terrain, it is not safe for flight. Keep to land and seek out Menarx after." Eidon added before he turned and headed off into the forest.

Neveah had not expected Eidon would so easily obey her orders, but it seemed Janice was exactly right, things were no longer the same for Neveah and she would have to realize that first for everyone else to do the same.

"Come on, we cannot give them the time to realize we are onto them." Neveah said to Dante and Estelle, heading off on the trail of the next storm singer.

_______________

A gentle stream meandered across the clearing, it was the first water body Neveah had encountered in both events she had been within this forest.

Though neither of these two events had been a leisure stroll.

"I sense it." Dante whispered to Neveah as they ventured into the clearing.

There was no use lurking around, Neveah gathered the dark fairy could already sense their approach, it was foolhardy to expect they had been so careful to avoid being sensed.

Now, it was only a matter of who would be more disadvantaged and with Dante’s presence, it was clear what party had the upper hand.

That was if the dark fairies did not have anymore surprises planned.

"It would be hidden in plain sight like the one from the tree, how could Eidon pick it out so easily?" Neveah murmured to herself as they moved even further into the clearing.

Neveah’s gaze roved around the clearing slowly, her narrowed eyes giving off a dim glow.

’The stream... something is off about it.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to Neveah as Neveah’s gaze moved over the stream.

Neveah’s gaze zeroed in on the stream and she watched intently, only then did she pick up the slightest ripples on the surface of the stream.

It was hardly noticeable in the darkness but Neveah could already guess what it meant.

Fairies were attuned to nature, dark or otherwise. If the previous dark fairy could conceal himself in the trunk of a tree and somehow camouflage into it,

Then the most suspicious thing in this clearing was precisely that stream.

Neveah passed a glance to Dante but she did not need to say anything as it was obvious he had already seen the very same thing she had.

But there was one person that had not taken notice yet, Estelle had ventured farther into the clearing than Neveah and Dante and was now walking along the edge of the stream.

Neveah and Dante anticipated the attack even before it came.

But it still caught everyone off guard as a hand shot out of the stream and grabbed hold of Estelle’s ankle, pulling her down into the water.

The very moment a scream of surprise escaped Estelle, Dante was already on the move.

"Leave this to me." Were the words Neveah barely caught from him. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Estelle dunked beneath the surface of the water and Dante was close behind, he dove straight into the stream, reaching for Estelle.

Neveah rushed to the edge of the stream, and peered into it.

It was astonishing as Neveah did not imagine the stream could be so deep, yet she could not see the bottom at all.

Neveah was not sure of it was the darkness messing with her eyes, but the water had gone still and there was absolutely no sign of movement.

It was clear the dark fairy had done something with the stream and Dante and Estelle were both in it’s clutches.

There was so much possibilities with dark magic that Neveah did not even allow herself to be surprised.

Neveah contemplated taking a dive, but was stopped by the voice of her wolf in her head.

’The scabbard dragon said to leave it to him. Neither dragon nor rider are weak and they are suited to work in tandem. We should wait it out.’

Neveah’s brows furrowed in displeasure, but she stepped back, waiting for either Dante or Estelle to resurface.
